I spent 20 years in the US Navy and over the years I and my friends have "discovered" various shipmates' hobbies. We never ratted the guy or girl out as they were the ones who were best at their job. Also , if we were in a bar the the guy's would say they had a girl at home and send the ladies that were around him to us. Doing that good deed we would have been idiots to get rid of the guy. I know of one girl that was gay but her pastime never interfered with her job.

Having been a Sailor gays never bothered me, they knew it would be suicide to do anything on the boat. Having said that, I have always maintained that I would rather have one gay that wants to serve and be in the Navy than 10 straight ones that one day decided that they made a mistake and proceeded to do everything they could to get out. Also as a Leading Petty Officer I had more trouble with the "straight" married Sailors than with the known gay ones. I don't care if you are gay or straight, when I was a Leading Petty Officer I only cared if you did your job.

Oh and the last statistics I saw, the Air Force had the biggest number of gays removed from the service, not the Navy.

One time on my dad's ship one of the guys decided to try to steal another sailor's pay from his locker. Well he was using a crowbar and woke up another guy who was sleeping in his berth, the guy decided that instead of stopping and running away, he tried to brain the guy in the berth with the crowbar. The crowbar got caught on a rail and the guy in the berth tackled the would-be thief and called for help. My dad and a few others arrived and they ended up beating the gak out of the guy before dragging him off to the ship's latrines where they proceeded to find the nastiest toilet and dunked his head in it. Then they hog-tied him, hung a sign around his neck that said "thief" and left him out in the ship's common area. The captain found out and said that the situation was dealt with before sending the thief off at the next port.

But the fact that they decided to televise it is what bothers me, just because you're a homosexual it doesn't mean you should broadcast it out to the world especially when your partner looks like your sister.

I assure you this is old school, if this happened nowadays it would be on the 24 hours news. Or the CO would have been fired later on, sad but true.

They televised it to show that it is allowed and that they know these things will happen, to send a message to those in the service that might not like it that they need to get over it, just as people had to get over serving with other ethnicity. They also did it to try and have some positive press as well. It is kind of silly to pretend that public relations isn't an important matter to any large body, whether military or civilian. This wasn't someones home video of themselves making out that they leaked to the internet just so you would know they were gay.

Yeah, it was just a blatant use of mass media to show that they were special because they were homosexuals.

Actually it was used to show that they are not special because of their homosexuality.

At the moment, they are special. You didn't often see female sailors willing to kiss their female partners while being filmed by mass media.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually the Navy behind it, not these two women on their own. Pretending that it is a mundane act when it has been illegal for your entire life up to this point is a bit disingenuous. A year ago this act would have gotten her booted from the service and today it is nothing, and that is something.

Don't get me wrong, I like watching two women make out with each other, but they looked like sisters to me instead of domestic partners.

Homecomings are always covered locally, did not have to draw attention to one particular couple though,

Ah, now I see the problem, you have no idea what is happening. Let me feel you in. For many many years (more than you have been alive) it was essentially, illegal, to be homosexual (and I suppose bisexual really) in the military. If you were found to be so you were drummed out of the service. Only recently, September of 2011, this ban was lifted. So, while Johnny Straightguy meeting his wife as he always has is normal and not worth mentioning, a gay woman meeting her partner in front of officers and enlisted and sharing a kiss is and not getting reprimanded for it or kicked out of the Navy is unusual and worth noting. What is being reported isn't that they were gay, as that isn't that unusual, it was that they didn't get fired for being gay. Hope that clears it up for you.

I am well aware of Don't ask Don't tell, but why make it seem special now. It only makes the divide that much worse because now it makes it look like homosexuals get special treatment just because they're homosexuals. I have always been one for equality, but equality doesn't mean focusing on one couple just because they're different.

Perhaps becuase it just changed; it didn't change 10 years ago, but just recently. People are still coming to terms with the fact gays can serve openly.

halonachos wrote:It only makes the divide that much worse because now it makes it look like homosexuals get special treatment just because they're homosexuals.

How is it special treatment to notice they can actually be like any other couple in the military? Isn't having the ability to have a mundane relationship the opposite of special treatment? It isn't like they were kicking people out for being straight. The story isn't that they are special or getting special treatment, but the fact that for the first time they are actually not getting special treatment.

halonachos wrote:I have always been one for equality, but equality doesn't mean focusing on one couple just because they're different.

Glossing over a very blunt, un-nuanced idea of equality, being equal also doesn't mean everyone is the same person either, or that everyone has gone through the same circumstances. We recognize all sorts of things being different all the time. If you like equality as you say you do, then you should like this story as it is a celebration of equality.

You can say it any which way Ahtman, but it doesn't rub me the right way. I have never gotten the urge to share my bedtime hobbies with anyone else and I don't like people who do. Its more of the prude in me speaking than anything else.

Kissing is not exclusively a bedtime hobby, especially if it reminds you of a kiss between sisters.

It doesn't remind me of sisters, they look like sisters. Same complexion, eyebrow styling, eye shape, and overall facial features as well as height. I also assure you that I am fully comfortable with my own orientation, but that's not something I believe in discussing on the internet with a mob of strangers.

I don't believe that's what he was on about; more that you said it doesn't remind you of sisters, and yet you said they look as if they are sisters.

He was on about me being reminded of a kiss between sisters. The kiss didn't remind me of anything nor did it remind me of a kiss between sisters or a kiss between two frenchmen greeting each other, its just that to me they physically look like sisters.
