Subject: 'There's Always Next Year!' And the NHL Play-offs for the rest of us!
Stupid Philly lost again. no matter the Pens will go down.
and the Hawks need to get their butts in gear.
and I hope Torres gets what is coming to him the reports say:
An in-person meeting could result in a suspension of more than five games.

Torres is officially suspended for 25 games. Looks good on him and hopefully this sends a message to all the other worthless morons like him that senseless & idiotic violence won't be tolerated any more.

Hits to the head have no place in any sport short of boxing and MMA type competitions.
Torres needs more than 25 games, but 25 will have to do. He is such a dirty player, they really need to suspend him for a season and send him to anger management.
P.S. Go Blackhawks!

I never knew LA had hockey fans till the went up 3-0 against the Canucks.
Being a Canadian living in New Zealand, its very hard to keep up with the Hockey. But the Canucks better reverse sweep the bloody kings and win the cup .

Not really. If their intimidation costs the team as a whole, rather than just the player, they will never enter the league.

Its not hard to hold off dirty hits, and when they happen it is generally a matter of intent. The only people that do otherwise are either ignorant, or idiots, and shouldn't be playing the game anyway.

The enforcement of rules is far from consistent, and clearly shows a bias towards "old time hockey" without any realistic attempt to account for increased player size relative to the rink.
Hell, even the old "playoff hockey" mantra is a disgrace to the league.

Not looking to derail a Hockey thread but.... Do you honestly think the NFL Refs are going to call the same hits on Peyton Manning and Michael Vick the same way? Not talking actual hits but incidental ones... Manning will get the roughing calls, Vick won't. Partly due to the official's perception of the contact in question, partly due to the player himself. Manning is now viewed as "fragile".
Inconsistant rules enforcement is displayed in all sports, not just the contact ones. Go back and watch some of Jordan's dunks.... He 'travels' on a consistant basis, but since it was Jordan at the height of his playing days he rarely got called for it.
The only way to get consistant enforcement is to replay everything, which make the games longer. Or just make them powderpuff... not touching, no speed. Might as well watch figure skating.
Of all the races of the universe the Squats have the longest memories and the shortest tempers. They are uncouth, unpredictably violent, and frequently drunk. Overall, I'm glad they're on our side!

Well, not the ones that deserve to be fired for incompetence, at least assuming illegal hits in both cases. That being said, I'm not so much talking about officiating as much as league action. Shanahan is horribly inconsistent, and the league has been historically so regarding suspensions.
helgrenze wrote:

Sure. But that doesn't mean the enforcers shouldn't be called incompetent for failing to be consistent.
Regardless, this isn't a matter of judgment alone, its a matter of a clear unwillingness to codify what is, and is not, legal regarding injurious hits. And, further, to enforce those flimsy rules that are in place.
helgrenze wrote:

Of course he did, because travelling has been an ephemeral foul in the NBA for 2-3 decades, and was not limited to star players.
The difference, of course, being that when Jordan traveled he didn't take any opposing players out of a playoff series.

Says the guy that's probably never played a sport in his life, let alone officiated one.
The thing is, this isn't really a game anymore. I mean it is, but at the end of the day millions of dollars ride of every check, shot, and save. Its a profession, not a passion, and it should be administrated as such.

Except that not every injurous hit is intentional. Especially in hockey which is the fastest of the contact sports.

Gotta cherrypick this one..... Professionally? probably as many as you have. Semi pro.... got paid to play some baseball, softball and bike racing. Non-paying, including HS hmmm. not done boxing, lacrosse, Jai Lai, or figure skating, played just about everything else on one organised team or another.
How about your credentials?

So then your solution would be that OSHA rules be applied? Again, better off watching Ice Dancing then as all "unsafe" practices would be eliminated.

The officials on the ice during the Torres hit should ALL be suspended as well for 25 games. One of them actualy had to move out of the way to avoid being hit by flying equipment from the hit which took place about three feet awayyet didnt make the call...
Philly had a really strong first period just now, they look hungry, but the pens have shown the abiity to rally...
I don't have a good feeling about my Bruins either...
helgrenze wrote:

That's true, but it is blatantly clear, especially given replay, when it is. The NHL is just too afraid of alienating fans of "Old Time Hockey" to behave in concert.

Consistancy like that isn't likely to happen, not from fear of alienating older fans, but, rather, to keep the "stars" on the ice. And there is no consistancy on who on any particular team is the perceived "star".
Personally, I would like to see the guy that gets called for the penalty actually Serve the Time for it, but then again it's about keeping the "stars" on the ice.

What stars have been so penalized? Ovechkin?
Flyers/Pens Game 3 3rd period... Penguins argued to keep Neill out of the box after the first scuffle.

No, it is very easy to see who, statistically, is a star. And, as with all pro sports, popular sentiment tracks well with stats.
What I meant was, it is not always the center who is the star of the team... or even a single line, or even from game to game. Heck, sometimes the star is the goalie.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Nice win by the Flyers..... but....
Ya know... as a defenseman, I always saw an open net goal (against my team) as an insult.

Right, and its all pretty easy to see that statistically. Hell, back in the day even goalies used to get penalties.

As for open net goals, as a center on a high caliber competitive team, I'd feel utterly insulted if our coach didn't pull our goalie in those must-win situations! Hell, when it's litterly at the point of 'score a goal or go home crying', who gives a flying fart about giving up one more? That extra skater is needed to help try and pop in a goal and tie the game up.
It's only a crap play if you're stupid about it and say pull your goalie before you actually get the puck over center or into the offensive zone... I've won tournaments thanks to pulling our goalie, it's something you need to bite the bullet and go for at times!

Defenseman's job in that situation is to prevent the other team from getting a puck into that open net. But if the other team gets the puck by you and just tosses it in.... it always seemed like "Yeah we won, and this ones for you."

Hence why when I played AA Bantam, the 6th skater's job was to clog up the center of the ice by keeping positioned up by the ringette line to help support the defense & cycle with the forward in the slot area. This left the other two forwards to forecheck the puck.
The key to it was to ensure your 4 forwards kept cycling through their positions so that no one was left standing around. Also having a defenseman who can 'walk the line' was dead helpfull too!
More often that not, when we had the 6th skater, the other team never got out of their end because of our forechecking system, meaning they had to make about a 200ft shot if they wanted that open net and then more than likely getting an icing call bring the puck all the way back for us!

Sounds like Luongo might be heading to Tampa Bay? They have a bunch of draft picks banked, plus it's somewhat familiar territory as Luongo began his career with the Panthers and his wife is from Flordia.
Still be funny to see him wearing a fallen maple leaf though!
Looks like Jersey survives for another game though with a 3-2 win in OT. The east are ensuring they drag things out and make these play-offs last to help boost NBC's ratings it seems.

The teams get reseeded after each round with the highest ranked surviving team playing the lowest.
If the Sens and Devils both win then Philly would play Ottawa and Wash would play NJ.
If the Panthers or Rangers win (and the other loses) then Wash plays that team, and Philly plays the other winner.
If Both NYR and Florida win, then Flyers play Panthers, and Caps play Rangers.
