My friend was learning the new tau codex, so this never happened again and probably never will, but because of a few unlucky rolls and dubious fallback moves, I got to position Kharn and seven MoK chaos chosen (With kharn, they make eight, which is fluffy) in between a tau buffmander and a unit of suits of one kind or another. So, Kharn leaves unit coherency and charges the commander, and my chosen bum-rush his pansy suits. The commander failed to get off any hits at all, while Kharn scored all seven hits and six wounds. Meanwhile, the chosen made 42 attacks on three suits. 30-ish hits, and like 14 wounds. I think I took one casualty. And they say assault isn't viable.
Of course, kharn killed the commander in a challenge, and the ruling of my FLGS at the time was that since I killed a character and won a challenge, I got 2 rolls on the boon table. What do I get? Instant death and eternal warrior. So, the chosen move back into coherency with kharn and they run the next shooting phase, only to be exactly 12 inches away from a riptide. This was a 1000 point game, so kharn and that 400 or so point unit of chosen was all I had left by turn 3. Of course I did what any devout follower of Khorne would do and charged the riptide. Kharn took like 5 over-watch hits, and I made LOS! rolls on all of them. the entire squad of 40+ point models is gone, so kharn puts like 6 wounds into that riptide and dies a worthy death. I still lost the game, though because by the time any of this happened, my buddy had fire warriors on three of four objectives. I love this game so much.

I went to Hershey Park in central PA this year, and I have to say I was more than a little disappointed. I fully expected the entire theme park to be make entirely of chocolate, but no. Here in America, we have "building codes," and some other nonsense about chocolate melting if don't store it someplace kept below room temperature. |

3rd edition. My first game ever, and it was with Tau against DA.
His (non-psyker 2 wound) HQ was running up the side of the board towards a Fire Warrior team. They rapid fired into him, taking him to one wound. He charges on his turn and clears his kill zone except for a single Fire Warrior.
Said Shas'la scoops a rock off the ground and wings it at him, hitting, wounding, and he flunks his armour save...
(This FW team would later go on to acquit themselves well in the next game by killing a Banshee Exarch in close combat and whittling some of the squad down).
In the first game as well, he had a Land Raider that ended the battle immobilized, with just the heavy bolter, and shaken and stunned to all hell from a Hammerhead and 3 Broadsides giving it full attention.
(On a side note, I've never killed a LR with a Tau Railgun. With fusion blasters or EMP grenades yes, but never with a Railgun).

Having Krom Dragongaze and Ahriman, who'd recently turned into a daemon prince, locked in a challenge with 1 wound each. The only other things left on the table were a pair of blood claws.
The dice were on Krom's side at the start but in the end the wolves got eaten.

Nothing too crazy, but back when I was a kid first learning 40k I was battling a Chaos player at a GW store with my space marines. Bloodthirster charged one of my tac squads and reduced it down to the sergeant. That lone sergeant survived three whole turns by himself against that demon before he was slain. The manager of the store gave that specific sergeant model special rules against demons for the next three months from his heroic encounter. I still have that model, it was a really exciting moment back then.

I would say mine was back in 5th edition, and going against Eldar. I decided to deepstrike Abaddon by himself and he didn't come in tell turn 3... I was loosing, the odds were not in my favor, Abaddon comes on to the field shots at a small Guardians squad makes them to an I check, they run off the board, next turn he wipes out a 5 man Dire Avenger squad with a Farseer and gets charge by another squad of Dire Avengers ending the game off with a tied game.

Back in 5th, I had a Chaplain and a squad of Assault Marines up against a seriously big amount of Tau units (we are talking 2 Broadsides, Hammerhead and multiple full squads of Firewarriors here). My guys stand in cover and the it's the Tau players shooting phase. He grabs his dice, expecting an easy taking and rolls... and nothing whatsoever happens. Not one single wound from the entire barrage of units listed above came through. You can probably guess what happened in my turn after that.

I'll set the mood...
Last round of a local tournament. Purge the Alien. Dawn of War deployment. My Salamanders versus the mighty Space Wolves. He deployed centralized behind an Aegis with all his marines on foot.
Turn1: I deepstrike in on the flank with 3 pods. Vulcan leading the charge with his Sternguard. He tanks all the shots for his men with his 2+.
Turn2: I declare a charge with Vulcan and company! Overwatch: 18 bolter shots deflect off his mighty armor! 1 Melta. No problem, he needs 6's. He gets a 6. Fack! No problem, I need a 2+ for Look Our Sir. Rolls a 1. Fack! No problem, I have a 3++ save. Rolls a 2. Fack!
First Blood, Slay the Warlord, and a Kill Point.
*Reaches over to shake hands. Good game* xD

Some of my most unforgettable times playing 40K happened when I first started playing 40K back in 3rd Ed. A friend of mine and I got interested in 40K when one of our other friends showed up at our monthly Model Club meeting with a SM diorama. We thought the models looked really cool and soon visited a local FLGS to check out the game and the models.
The friend with the SM diorama bought more SM’s (of course), my other friend bought Eldar and I instantly fell in love with Orks when I saw the Stormboyz models with the huge rockets strapped on their backs and absolutely had to buy Orks.
So, my SM friend has a huge 2 car garage and decided to build a gaming table. Now this isn’t just any gaming table, but an 8’ x 12’ behemoth covered with 3 complete 4’ x 8’ sheets of plywood. Not knowing any better, we began our 40K gaming careers playing on this monster of a table.
My army at the time consisted of a Warboss, a couple of squads of Slugga Boyz, a couple of squads of Stormboyz, some Tankbustas, some Burna Boyz, 5 Mega Nobz, a Trukk, 3 Warbuggies, 5 Warbikes and 3 Deffkoptas. Not a single piece of armor or long range weaponry among the lot.
Meanwhile, my SM friend had the whole SM shootin’ match and then some; multiple HQ choices, Terminator squads, Veteran squads, min-maxed TAC squads with Lascannons and Missile Launchers, Devastator squads, Bikes, Attack Bikes, Land Speeders, Rhinos, Razorbacks, Predators and a stinking Whirlwind.
So, we started playing pretty much every weekend. Most of my Orks were footslogging it across the table from hell getting pounded all the way in to CC (if they survived). Da Boyz were consistently getting slagged by way too many Lascannons, every piece of SM armor on the board and they were getting pie plated like clockwork by that fething Whirlwind.
Finally, I did the logical thing, I studied the Rulebook and the Ork Codex and I discovered Looted Vehicles. I looked over the available choices and I noticed the Basilisk. So I thought, what better way to reach out and touch someone than to get a vehicle with an Earthshaker Cannon that can shoot 120”, problem solved! So off to the FLGS I went, I plunked down my money and I left the proud new owner of a Looted Basilisk.
The next game, I showed up and plopped down my Looted Basilisk on the table and my SM friend asked “What’s that?”. A Looted Basilisk I said and I proceeded to show him the rules in the Codex. So, Turn 1, I placed my Basilisk on the forward edge of my deployment zone and I was able to shoot all the way across to the other side of the mother of all tables, I started dropping S9 AP3 Ordnance 1/Blast shots on his troops and began to force him to make saving throws. Back in 3rd Ed you couldn’t pre-measure your Ordnance shots and you had to guess the range and then roll for spread. I got pretty adept (and lucky) at guesstimating range, rolling favorably for spread and getting most of my shots to land on his troops.
My SM friend absolutely sucked at making savings throws (especially when the pressure was on). A lot of the time, he failed his savings throws. He started to get frustrated because he was losing troops as early as Turn 1 before they even got into shooting range of my troops.
Then one day it happened, he failed a savings throw (again), he’s so pissed at this point that he can’t see straight. I stood by in amazement as he picked up the model and the dice that just failed the savings throw off of the table and the winged them across the garage into the wall. The poor SM model hit the wall, shattered and fell to the floor in pieces, along with the dice.
Soon, this became a semi-regular occurrence. SM fails savings throw, SM flies across the garage without the aid of a Jump Pack, meets wall and shatters, then plummets to the floor in pieces accompanied by the dice. When we would show up the next week to play, we would see all of these poor SM models that had been crudely glued back together again, looking like some poor twisted cripples.
Needless to say, that Basilisk really got inside his head and rattled his confidence. Regardless of what scenario we were playing, he always played the “Kill the Basilisk at all costs” scenario every game. I usually got my clock cleaned in most of the games that I played against him, but I relished the small victories when my Basilisk managed to take out some of his troops.
And I still have that Basilisk … really wish I could still use it today

Perfect Shot Black Templar Predator Pilot
|
Was it 3rd edition or 4th? I can't remember. Maybe it was 3rd when the first city fight codex came out with the campaign. What was that map called...Vogen I think. Anyways...We always filled our tables with tons of terrain and it really made it seem like a true battle in the city.
I played as my Black Templars...Back then they use to be referred to as cheesey....well it certainly played out that way for me.
I believe it was 1500 or so points. My Templars were in locked combat with Blood Angels the entire game. It would go back and forth, but his death company seemed to be chewing apart my marines. It wasn't until he came against my Emperor's Champion.
Against all odds, that lil black sword wielding champion cut down his squad of Dead Company without even breaking a sweat. It was one of those moments where the game was either going to be won or lost in that close combat. I will never forget when the final dice fell against the table and the last DC model was removed my EC stood in victory.
Odd now, because my EC always seemed to die in combat no matter his opponent. Lets hope 7th edition changes that for me!

You may have seen this on before. I ran a game night at FLGS back in 4th edition days. One evening we had a 14 year old motor mouth (MM) playing
a 10 year old who was learning the game. Objective was to kill the enemy commander. MM played Chaos and set up with his commander
in back row by himself - Chaos Bob. 10 year old's first shot was a SM missle launcher at Chaos Bob. Passed the intervening model dice roll, hit
and wounded Chaos Bob terminally. Game, set, match in one shot. MM went on for 10 minutes trying to get a grasp on what happened.

I think my Rhino crew was acting a bit drunker than usual in the game I just played earlier this evening.
So, it's a small game, 750 points, my Wolves vs. Imperial Guard. I'm running a few squads of Grey Hunters, the relevant one of which is a single squad in a Rhino. First turn of the game, it rides up into terrain to jump onto an objective, rolls a 1 and immobilizes itself. First hull point gone. Well, crap, I think, not a great way to start the game. I fail to repair it in the shooting phase, so it spends a turn sitting there, and the unit inside jumps out to slog their way up the board since I don't see much hope in repairing the Rhino. Lo and behold, turn 2, shooting phase, Rhino repairs itself.
On my turn 3, I get an objective card that requires me to move over to a nearby objective. I can just barely make it if I get lucky rolls on movement with the Grey Hunters, but the Rhino can definitely make it as long as it doesn't immobilize itself again. Sure enough, the Grey Hunters don't quite make it, I move the Rhino over, and...it immobilizes itself on the flat-out move. Two hull points gone. I fail the repair roll again, and on turn 4, I definitively move into position with my Grey Hunters. At which point, my Rhino repairs itself again on a lucky 6.
Turn 5 comes, and I once again get an objective card for the first objective that I left to get the second objective. Once again, I can just barely make it with the Grey Hunters if they roll well enough, but they're in a good shooting position, so I decide to go for the Rhino again. I figure, come on, what are the odds of rolling 3 1s in a row on dangerous terrain?
Apparently pretty darn good, because of course, the Rhino rolls a 1 again and wrecks itself trying to get out of terrain. My opponent literally fired at it once, and he missed the shot, and I still lost the Rhino by the end of the game because it immobilized itself three different times.

Well it finally happened. I turn up to my friends house for a friendly 600 point game. He was using a new dark eldar army against me, so i built a fun list to play him with. So i added a big mek with shokk attack gun! and he rolls double 5..... needless to say, he died haha! my other HQ, a weirdboy, did literally nothing the whole game, rolling 1 or 2 for basically every psychic phase, being denied or just not getting my powers off. sad face. I won in the end though

A game I just played. CSM vs SW. I was running Abaddon and a Sorcerer in a Chosen Squad with a Land Raider, I charge them out of it into a Grey Hunter Pack and Abby wiped them, than get charged by TWC, Abby does one wound on a TWCPL and the Sorcerer with Iron Arm and Warp Speed takes out 2 TWC and 2 FW. My opponent has read fluff on Abby and was expecting him to destroy squads and he is making all is 3++ saves against Abby and I was like only in this game will a Sorcerer out badass Abby.

Just 2 weeks ago, last game turn, there are 2 necron wraiths sitting on an objective. There is an IG command so the plan is, charge the wraiths, pray to the emperor that we survive the fight and steal the objective. They move 6" in the movement phase, psychick phase comes, the psycker in the command squad casts shriek at the wraiths, he rolls double 6, rolls on the perils table, rolls 1, fails the LD test and wipes out the command squad!

though its not that amazing, i draw a game at 600 points against grey knights despite outnumbering him almost 6 to 1 as orks, was pretty disappointed.
another 600 point game I was against imperial guard, possible last turn (it was as it turns out) my oponent made a tank shock in an attempt to steal an objective which would win him the game (he want 3-0 in the torny so i wasnt that sad). My warboss was the only power klaw in the unit.... death or glory! .... hits! ..... rolls a 1 and dies..........

Killing myself with my own daemon weapon (seriously, 1 rolled 1 four rounds of combat in a row! And against Black Templar scouts!)

PFC Cortus is a plasmagunner in Dog company's 1st Platoon Command Squad. While his platoon is pinned down on an objective around a rocky outcrop, a traitorous storm raven screams down to drop a payload of blood angels eager to butcher his comrades.
Cortus takes the initiative. Shaking with fear, he aims his gun toward the incoming craft and pulls the trigger. In a flash of brilliant light the storm raven bursts into flames taking it's crew with it. The craft slams to the ground and skids to a stop mere feet from Cortus' smoking plasmagun. For this Cortus received Mercova's highest honour for valor in the face of the Emperor's enemies; the Brass Spike.
Later, during the pacification of Herion IV (it was a escalation tourney day), PFC Cortus and his squad find themselves at the wrong end of an ork charge. The tribe's fearsome warboss, a massive beast clad in indomitable armour, leads his slavering warband straight toward the Guard line. The savage is wounded already but no less formidable in battle.
With the screams of the dying echoing in his ears, Cortus vents his plasmagun and fires a wild defensive shot at the behemoth ork. It finds it's mark, punching through the iron battle armour and burning xenos flesh. Still the beast rushes toward his squad.
The sound of the ork plunging into imperial line is sickening. Men are torn to meat left and right by the alien's massive power klaws. Seeing his friends dead around him and knowing he has only moments to live is too much for Cortus. Resigned to his fate he acts rather than decides to go on fighting. He grips his unvented plasmagun in his hands like a war club, searing the skin on his palms from the still white hot plasma coils. With a prayor to the Emperor spoken out of instinct rather than faith, he drives the butt of his weapon into the screaming maw of the ork king. Cortus shatters the beast's skull and turns his head into a wet smear. The warboss falls to the ground in a mighty thud. Cortus stands above the carcass and yells the name of death as the Mercovan battle line rallies to throw off the ork attack.
I painted the star on his shoulder gold the next day.

When super heavies became allowed in 40k a friend and I tried it with his demons and my Tau. He took lord of skulls, 2 blood thirsters, and some blood letters, I had some FW's two riptides, broadsides, Farsight bomb with 4 melta crisis suits and Ovesa.
Well, the farsight's bomb dropped beside te lord of skulls, Dakka'd it. Guess where the D strength template went? Ontop of Farsight and friends.
Another one was an apoc game with the same friend where my Fusion blades commander decided to Solo a brass scorpion.. Well he hit it with a good left hook(2 actually) rolled hot on armor pen and results. The thing exploded, took him, some demons and 2 crisis teams out with it. Wasn't even made.
Played 10k Tau vs 15k Space Wolves,he was supposed to deploy his extra 5 on another table to help a 5k point player fight another 10k beside me, but they where just wiggling back and forth so he directed most of it at me. Of all my losses that he incurred where about 20 kroot a couple pirhanas, and my crisis suits. Farsight stabbed Arjac in the face and killed him. And they nuked my fusion blades commander from orbit because he just wouldn't die. He was near tabled before a 10k army of Eldar beside him and a bunch a bunch of death company wiped out the orks beside me. The Space Wolves may have got a boot stomping but those space elf tree huggers sure did throw it back at me.

Pretty sure nobody actually reads these things, but I can't stop myself. I've told these stories several times, but I will compile them here as an anthology: 1: The assassin that jumps out of your unit and hits you with a flamer that targets LD attacked my fire warrior squad. It killed everyone except the Sargent, then charges into close combat. Somehow my lone FW Sargent manages to wound the assassin, make it fail its leadership test, then run it down in a seeping advance. That model then goes on to hold me an objective and help me win the game. I painted that sergeant with the coveted "golden helmet" award for valor. It will forever retain a special place in my heart. 2: I was testing out the Riptide for the first time against Tyranids. My opponent brought the Doom in a spore drop pod. I managed to kill the doom with interceptor fusion shots from my crisis suits, then decided to charge the drop spore with my riptide. "what's the worst that could happen?". I forgot that the spore counted as a monstrous creature. it put a wound on my riptide, made me fail my leadership, then I rolled 3d6 for fallback distance and fell back off the board. So a spore pod killed my riptide. 3. Playing the Tau vs Tau mirror matchup. He snipes my Ethereal out of the FW unit in a devilfish turn 1 with a couple lucky shots. Then turn 2 my Barracuda comes in from reserves. I drop the large blast ion template on top of a devilfish, a fully loaded squad of FW including a cadre fireblade, and a squad of dual melta crisis suits that was right next to it for some reason. The only thing left standing was the transport. That Barracuda won me the game. That was actually a pretty good game. We both took stuff the other one never took, so we ended up correcting each other about the rules several times throughout the match. Learned a lot about how my codex works! 4. A game came down to a single broadside suit on my side and a single brood lord on the opponent's side. We had a full on Wild West style shootout along the central street of the city themed gaming board we were playing on. This was before overwatch was a thing so I was playing conservative as hell with my positioning. I eventually killed the brood lord with a railgun shot and won the game with one model left on the table. 5. We were playing a "space hulk" inspired game where each unit moved around as a scrap of paper on a very dense board until it got into LOS of another unit, then we both revealed what was under the marker. I had a unit of broadsides and I ran into the Doom for the first time ever. I just heard "take a leadership test on 3d6" and had absolutely no idea what was coming. Ended up with one broasdside left that did not fail its leadership check and instant deathed the Doom with a railgun shot from less than an inch away, We decided the pilot just shoved his railgun into the doom's mouth and pulled the trigger. I ended up getting stomped in that game since Tau vs Tyranids in a dense board before overwatch was a thing meant bad things for me, but I'll always have that memory. When you play one army since 3rd edition you end up with a lot of attachment to your models Lots more stories I won't tell you, but those were the most important ones. P.S. One other one: 6. The "close combat monster" assassin that blows up when it dies charged my crisis suit commander. It put a wound on him with shooting it's needle pistol beforehand. Somehow my commander managed to deal a wound and kill it, then survive the resulting explosion (I swear, the "flailing slow" crisis suit with S5 is underestimated far too often amongst my opponents). We decided the commander just grabbed the assassin and shoved him onto the needler shard sticking out of the commander's chest. Pretty impressive in my opinion.

It's always a laugh when the Riptide dies because it's not fearless. Or Nova Reactors itself to death.
More often than not, if my Riptide isn't cooking himself alive, he's being chased by a bloodletter because they're scary.

Veteran Inquisitorial Tyranid Xenokiller
|
I will always remember playing a Planetstrike game in 5th ed where my friend had flown his vendetta onto a landing pad. I happened to have 3 Death Company Members beneath the pad and on the next turn they had to move up the pad and assault the vendetta. I laughed my way through 3 turns of watching these maniacs glance the vendetta over and over, immobilizing it and tearing it's weapons off one by one until it was finally wrecked. 3 TL Lascannons, and 2 Heavy Bolters later I'm sure the guardsmen piloting it had peed there pants as these maniac ripped apart their baby.
We both stopped and laughed at that situation.

Ladies Love the Vibro-Cannon Operator

Once I played in an RTT with a Chaos army according to the 3.5 Ed codex.
My list was
2 Lieutenants on bikes with pw, 9 minor psychic powers
5x6 Daemonettes
6 Daemonettes on steeds
3 Obliterators
1 Defiler
The Lieutenants were rolling on the minor psychic power table fishing for siren.
With siren they were invisible. The enemy couldn't shoot and charge them.
The plan was to move them close to the enemy front ranks and summoning the Daemons.
Summoned Daemons were able to charge in the same turn.
The other participants almost wanted to kill me.
I won all games with ease, also against the hated IW list with nine Oblits.
Cheers.
