Putting together a Kickstarter is actually a LOT of work.
I have most of the 3D models made of the minis I plan to do a kickstarted for (that Iron Wind Metals launched their Kickstarter for the old Tom Meier sculpts could not have come at a better time, either), but getting all of the price-points, rewards, and stretch goals established, and estimating pricing for shipping is a freaking B*TCH.

Yeah, I'm trying to put one together and it is a bear. I've slowed way down as I grasp how much work I need to do just to present a slick product, and I haven't even funded yet, let alone launched.

I haven't seen a single thing in that thread that looks exciting to me. Brand new IPs from brand new companies don't typically do better than established companies.
And the models arent really on the same level as, say, raging heroes, so I guess I don't get why it'll be "huge".
Personally, I thought you were going more with the "populated by the dirty unwashed masses" analogy

I think it's going to be huge in that it's being run by Dakka (yakface, legoburner, and some other fellows) and it's been being worked on for three years, so it feels like there is a lot of potential there. Here's the link:

Plus I think the models (especially the Karists) are quite great.
It will be interesting to see how it turns out, but nothing about it particularly interests me. The fact that its run by 'Dakka' doesn't really mean anything, they are still just a bunch of unestablished people who have never put out a game before, and three years is about average for game design. What its really got going for it atm is that they had enough starting capital to get some really high quality art, a handful of styrene sprues, and really high end paint jobs for a few studio models.
Hopefully it works out better for them than Dark Potential did for MiniWargaming.

That's sorta where I sit. None of the designs are really speaking to me and, quite frankly, I don't have the time to invest in caring about a new IP's fluff unless there's something wholly unique to draw me in.
And after seeing the Shadows of Brimstone HIPS models, simply because something is in HIPS means jack diddly to me.
With the Dakka pedigree behind it, with people known in the community, who have put untold time and effort into wargames, I imagine many will back it practically sight unseen.
Which isn't to say that the crew aren't doing a gakton of work, or that it won't be a quality product. But with nearly 100,000 users registered, even if a fraction of those back (and another fraction worth of non-members backed), they could likely pull in a good bit of money.
Hell, I'm not remotely interested in picking up a new wargame that isn't Bioware licensed Mass Effect based stuff, but I could see pitching them $5 for a name on the Thank You page/site or whatever.
It's made by members of the community, and a community effort can draw in a lot of support based on that good will alone. If the models speak to people (for Maelstrom itself or other games/uses), the fluff is appealing, and/or the mechanics click, all the better.
Look at follow up campaigns that explode in their first days; the sense of community and supporting those who make (related or not) products that people already appreciate can go a long way.
Guess we'll see when it does launch, but I can understand why some would be optimistic for it to do well. Campaigns led by crappy people with terrible reputations have done well enough that I'd certainly hope a home grown one with some love and effort behind it would attract some interest/cash.
