Okay, then let me ask, where you're living now do you feel like that is a big deal? I ask because I tend to subscribe to a less combative (if that is even the right term) survival strategy that involves either sheltering in place or isolation over arming up.

Look at what happened in New Orleans. How quickly society degenerated down there. The "unarmed" will only be the first victims.

I say this, not really believing that we'll face such a situation. I do believe though that the people who think they can just "hide and be safe" in that situation, will be the first to become food.

There were like, 600 rapes in the Superdome.

I think at least 12,00 murders, also.

There we go, I'd say that is a situation where going in arm is a good plan. That said, I will stick by my thinking that your basic survival bag/kit should keep guns as a low priority, and even then you'd be better served with something like a .22 rather than heavy weapons.

This. I think a small handgun is perfectly reasonable, but I don't think I'd carry anything bigger than a 9mm.

If any gun, go with a .22 rifle. That's something you can somewhat reliably hunt with.

The LA riots over Rodney King? The Korean shop owners and their families definitely felt 'at war' and acted accordingly.

Detroit riots

The day the Barney the Dinosaur show started.

Hurricane zone and as I found out - potential for wildfires

Austin house-tornado zone and as I found out - potential for wildfires.

When I say bugout bag I'm literal about that. A hopefully temporary natural disaster is coming and its best to vacate.

As we lost one of my few remaining relatives in Katrina thats amazingly less funny to read then you might think.
Besides, I heard it was 27,000.

I'd go with pistol and shotgun with slling. If its SHTF time, you want people to see you heavily armed. Threats will choose easier targets. When we were running caravans to tornado victims for a few years we typically ran heavy in case we got into a bad situation. I went on one and had a Beretta 92 and Dad's M1 next to me in the truck cab (for moral support).

That reminds me I need to get a sling.

.223 would be better. Ammuntion is much easier to acquire, and will work better on anything you're trying to shoot.

Depends. You also make yourself a more attractive target and unless you shoot anything at sight, people might backstab ya if ya sleep.

But I do like idea of a gun-wielding wiener dog.

Maybe if I encounter a rabbit that spotted and have time to set up the shoot. I'm quite use to my M4

Also do the Russian thing and train them to approach other humans thinking they have treats for them. Unbeknown to them is the IED strapped under its belly

Still though a remote control car/truck will get you the same effect.

Somewhere in south-central England.

In Japan we had earthquake preparedness kits that included first aid, bottled water (actually canned bottled water), compact food items, a torch and a radio, emergency blankets.

Japan is also subject to typhoons and volcanoes. The best way to deal with a typhoon is to stay at home. The best way to deal with a volcano is to run away as quickly as possible, but they are relatively localised, so once you get a few miles away you are fine.

The only other problem was Kaiju and there wasn't anything anyone could do about that.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Instant stew meat.

Plus since the target got their legs blown off at the knee and bleed out you can still loot the bodies

I usually shake my head at such nonsense but I have a Butane Stove, Mirror, flint, decent lighter, water proof matches etc around. + a small axe/hatchet, saw, wire wool and lighter fluid.

Being in Britain its highly unlikely a kit would be needed, but since I have the stuff anyway, its all kept in good condition and is accessible. The value of making fire and warmth should not be underestimated.

Location might be a factor as well. I'm more suburban and the biggest animals we usually have around here are coyotes. If I were to shelter in place I would be more likely to go after the 50,000 rabbits that go after our neighborhood or the squirrels. If I could only have one rifle and handgun I might be tempted to go 9mm and .22.

Get a pellet rifle for squirrels for if hit by 5.56mm, 9mm, or something......KISS term. You want as much meat as possible. Also if I remember correctly back in SERE one cannot subsist entirely on rabbits for one will die. Rabbit lack "fat" or something. Also they're carnivores to and might be possible they were munching on your neighbors. I ate dog before but first to go will be BoB (Big Ole Bear) that lives behind my house in the woods (black bear)
