Not sure how I can be heterophobic when I can have hetero relationships (being bisexual)... it was more just a joke...Point being no Top Gun volleyball... what do you have to join to get that, the Navy?
Put the point of being small, fragile, not liking the gung ho of it all...
The military is the wrong place for me. I don't have the mindset for it.

Why should I fear a small and fragile guy?
And for what it is worth, I had a very small/petite fragile looking female sergeant in one of the units I commanded, and when it came down to it, she was anything less than fragile. She was tough as nails, and a great NCO and a great trooper. She was a great asset to the unit.

They're not full of stuffing, they're made of a hard resin and have a lot of little knives (I have taken great care in arming them)

There we go, that's a good place to start. So let's break this down.
I do want to give you praise for recognizing blizzards as threats. Most people do not and they are left out when the power goes out. That said, it does present different survival challenges than say a major disaster. For blizzards, you generally aren't grabbing your bag and leaving, you're going with what you can and sheltering in place until the roads clear/power is restored. It's nice because you don't need a bag so much as a clear supply of canned food and warm clothes. You have more space to work with and you should use it. The basics of water, food and clothing/blankets are handled and really you just need more of those. If you want to go further, I'd invest in a small generator as well, that way you can run heating devices indoors or other equipment.
Civil unrest is kinda the same thing. You don't want to be out and about when that kind of stuff is going down. Being exposed puts you in greater danger and should be a last resort. The goal really should be to increase your security and make your home less likely to come under attack. The only time you'll need to bug out is if there is imminent risk of destruction ala fire and no emergency services.

Curran - you make a really good point. Bug-IN supplies are probably more important than a BOB.
The other thing a BOB should take into account is modularity - in the summer months your BOB should change from the winter months. In the summer months, weight you can save on some of the more extreme warm clothing could be occupied by more food or things of that nature.
In terms of general use, I'm thinking hard about "investing" in a pallet of cheap vodka. Before you scoff hear me out - liquor is useful for lots of things...recreation, anesthetic, morale, burning, etc. It has lots of value, and it's one of the things that is readily convertible as a trade commodity. It's not like silver, where it may not really have any inherent use, or ammunition or reloading components that are only useful for a subset of firearms.

Living in a rural area right now, the Bug In is our go to plan. We can sustain the horses, dogs (even the undead one) and ourselves for a while, even if power is out. We have a well, not city water, a generator, a pond and creek, and generally more than enough food that will keep to last us a while.

Depends on the kind of emergency. In case of a Zombie Apocalypse (which is, accordingly to the internet...the most likely sort of apocalypse), I'd not burden myself with a body armor. It's way too heavy and survivors in a Zombie Apocalypse need to be fast.

How many disasters occurred here in the US where it was full on anarchy and murder, then? Maybe Katrina, although that was more looting and less "war between survivor tribes".

The LA riots over Rodney King? The Korean shop owners and their families definitely felt 'at war' and acted accordingly.

I've heard this logic elsewhere and I think it's pretty sound. Precious metals are nice, but have no intrinsic use as would booze, or ammunition, or dried foods.

Might not be a natural disaster. Have a complete power grid crash (hackers). Protests gone nuts. Social collapse. Financial crashed. It can be any number of things. You pack for what you think you need being the individual perception is going to be fluid on whats going on in the real world.

Okay, then let me ask, where you're living now do you feel like that is a big deal? I ask because I tend to subscribe to a less combative (if that is even the right term) survival strategy that involves either sheltering in place or isolation over arming up.

Look at what happened in New Orleans. How quickly society degenerated down there. The "unarmed" will only be the first victims.
I say this, not really believing that we'll face such a situation. I do believe though that the people who think they can just "hide and be safe" in that situation, will be the first to become food.

At least where I live, I think the biggest danger is severe weather and/or an extended power outage. I already have a lot of power outages (minor), and because we have a well, when we lose power we also lose fresh water.
