Vast majority of the time you can get financing sorted out same day in the US. Not necessarily the best financing mind you, but it is quite easily done. Same with insurance as most of the time its as simple as calling up your insurance company and giving them the details of the new vehicle and they'll get it added on right then and there.

The only thing you'd ever have to wait for on a vehicle would be plates from the DMV, but you'd have temp plates till then.

I guess the question was more whether that was common or not.

Here in Oz I definitely could do that, there's nothing stopping me walking into a dealership and out with a car, but my feeling is that it would be quite uncommon. We actually have "cooling off" periods here, where if you put a deposit down and agree to buy a car from a dealer, there's 3 days where you can change your mind and it only costs you $400 or 2%. Not that it stops you driving a car away on the same day, but it is an option we have to think about it for a couple of days without losing too much.

I know in the US financing and leasing through the dealership is more of a thing that it is in Oz (again, it does exist in Oz, but just chatting to people on forums my understanding is that in the US it's used as a bargaining tool more than it is here).

Anyway, we've kind of gone off the topic which was Tesla wanting to sell direct to the consumer in Texas rather than using a 3rd party dealer network as is currently required by the local laws.
