I guess the question was more whether that was common or not.
Here in Oz I definitely could do that, there's nothing stopping me walking into a dealership and out with a car, but my feeling is that it would be quite uncommon. We actually have "cooling off" periods here, where if you put a deposit down and agree to buy a car from a dealer, there's 3 days where you can change your mind and it only costs you $400 or 2%. Not that it stops you driving a car away on the same day, but it is an option we have to think about it for a couple of days without losing too much.
I know in the US financing and leasing through the dealership is more of a thing that it is in Oz (again, it does exist in Oz, but just chatting to people on forums my understanding is that in the US it's used as a bargaining tool more than it is here).
Anyway, we've kind of gone off the topic which was Tesla wanting to sell direct to the consumer in Texas rather than using a 3rd party dealer network as is currently required by the local laws.
