Nothing wrong with it. Most of the time they do little to the enemy but provide a distraction, and you are as much at risk from them as your opponent.

Not really. Pretty much every competitive list includes cheap disposable units which can be used to flush out the fanatics. When they’re all sprung by turn 2, they tend to get in your way a bit and kill as many or more goblins than they do enemy.

It can get a bit more unfriendly if you include a ton of shooting (6 or 8 bolt throwers) along with heavy magic. But between their poor combat stats and wretched LD, it’s hard to make a goblin army that most people would consider complaining about.

It depends on how many points you are playing, how many units you have etc.

My background is tournament play and at 2250 points more than 12 in an all NG army is severely frowned upon, 10 seems OK.

My dwarves don't mind them, simply because I tend to get you to launch them all 1st or 2nd turn with my gyros and miners and then sit back and watch them kill your stuff, possibly shooting certain ones if any randomly make it across to my side after a turn or two.

Sadly that was the whole point of having them for such a long time, and a lot of people still feel that way, that I do not mind at all.

Let's all be 100% honest here. The Orcs & Goblins are so far behind the times right now I fully expect my opponent to max out his list as much as possible. Does it bother me though? No...Just started up VC and I make zombies appear around his units and watch them pop out early

You flatter me. But really, I'm just an ordinary guy. I put my pants on the same way anybody else does: I put a gun to the head of my manservant and bark Russian military commands at him until the poor blighter either figures it out or watches his brains exit his forehead.

Please do not advise this.

Why get thrown out the tournament? seems like a clever tactic and with goblins, i'd say anything goes!

@2400 points, you can get an orc warboss (for LD9), a level 4 orc shaman (for warpath), and a night goblin BSB (for re-rolls),
and then take 14 units of night goblins, with 3 fanatics each.
That's 42 Fanatics!

I think I'd run it with a goblin warboss or two goblin big bosses in every unit.
That cuts it down to 8 units with 24 Fanatics, but it gives you some hitting power in combat instead of being a 1 trick pony.

On average, you're getting 1/3 or so of the fanatics off at the right clip to even hit your opponent right away- sometimes less.

After the first turn of the fanatics spam, they're as dangerous to you as they are to your opponent for possible contact. While a goblin list is usually designed to take that kind of punishment and shrug, it still takes them (largely) out of the equation against your opponent.

Fanatics are just plain fun. If you're running an all NG list, you've already cursed yourself to a panicky list of an army, relying on LD7 (LD8 with the Banner of Discipline BSB) mess, and with the hordiness of them, often testing on based 5, or 6 with a BB.

NG have these nasty tricks for a reason - they are the gutter of basic troops. If any high elf player were to cause controversy over a fanatic heavy list, I'd ask him to calm down and watch how badly I do once we get into actual combat.

Also, goblins and night goblins are like this for a reason - brutally unpredictable, potentially overwhelming, and ...most likely... self defeating.

Funnest. Army. Ever.

I did a proxy game with max fanatics.
(Night Goblin Big Boss, 17 units with 3 fanatics each, 1 mangler)

Crushed the dark elves in short order. I deployed in a checker board, 5 units up front, 5 middle, and 7 back deep, spread out, this covered the whole table. My movement wasn't about lining up charges, or shots, or covering my flanks. My movement was all about controlling where I was going to panic, and to get good locations to release fanatics into (ie, either be partially out of the terrain, or more than 8" from it).

If anyone has 340 spare night goblins with short bows, let me know, it was a blast to play.

It's a legal tactic, you won't be thrown out at the tournament. Just keep in mind that you lose a LOT of points if you kill such a unit.

Probably the most effective use for Fanatics I have seen is to have buffer units designed to be charged that are between the Fanatic holding units and the enemy. For example, have a big block of Trolls that will ignore half of the wounds, or a really big block of NG that can absorb the losses, front and center in your army. Don't leave much of anything worth charging on the flanks.

You push the buffer unit forward immediately followed by the Fanatic holding units. The point is that the units with Fanatics want to be right behind the buffer unit. When the opponent charges the buffer unit, the Fanatic units are within 8" of the charging unit. The Fanatics are released towards the buffer unit. Since you're so close to the buffer unit, the Fanatics automatically pop out the other side of that unit, usually right in front of the charging unit. This maximizes both the accuracy and damage output of the Fanatic. If you're using a Horde of NG as the buffer unit, the points you lose from killing NG will be far outweighed by the losses of whatever unit charged (unless it's Skave Slaves or Zombies).

The most effective use I've seen is deploying behind warmachines. When the machines get charged, you throw the fanatics through the T7 machines. Machines are largely unaffected (only wounded on 6's), and even if the machine should die, you don't really care since it's likely to die anyway.

This gives you 2 to 3 turns of warmachine shooting and maximizes the damage the fanatics do.

Of course, it's still really fun to just take as many as you can and try and deal with the panic as 20-30 fanatics bounce around the table.

As for the 1 wide wheel, it is mostly illegal. You cannot have any model move more than twice its Movement Allowance, and such a wheel would put the rear goblin well beyond 8".

Pretty sure he referred to you just wheeling the unit to reach units to the sides more easily. Where normally, you'd have to move and turn, you can just wheel to then throw the Fanatics out as you can freely choose where they're thrown out.

I have no problem against this. In fact I'd be down with it. As TK. I'd would hold most of my army back, and do a lot of shooting, let Skullapults, caskets do thier thing. The tomb scorpion would get entombed. and well Sphinx would just go straight at the battle lines. likely the worst match up for this type of list.

My objection with this type of build is it would be a boring game. Massed fanatics get released. Both armies stay apart while one player spends a half an hour a movement phase just resolving the fanatics’ movement. Next to no tactical acumen would be involved in playing either side of this game.

As a tournament player, this is also the type of list that would rarely finish all 6 turns in a time limited game. A second strike against it.

Actually this is not true. In fact, it is quite the opposite. O&G is seeing a renaissance (at least on the tournament scene) since they have many of the tools to deal with the current high AS meta.

Off the top of my head, O&G has won the SCGT in England, WCGT in Southern California, SAWS in Northern California and was top general at Bragging Rights in Connecticut. Admittedly Bragging Rights was a team event where engineering matchups is a key element. All 4 were different players with different builds requiring different tactics.

Ye, G&O is a pretty good, upper mid tier army. We aren't as blatantly OP as Skaven or LM, but we're very well-balanced and fun to play with. You just have to play very un-orkish aka focus on ranged to get a good list going.
