WOW... I am just lost for words. This thread is just pure full throttled awesome... Took me 3 days to look through ALL of it and it has not been time wasted.
Someone needs to make this a sticky!!

Just spent £30 on modeling tools, green stuff and bitz.. Thanks guys lol
I have 3 projects in mind already... I hope to be able to contribute soon!

Got a couple questions, please drop me a pm if you can help out as I don't want to clutter this thread:

Spoiler:
1. The white plastic stuff on some of the models was that 3d printed or sculpted ?
2. Good greenstuff/sculpting tutorials?
3. How was the smoke effect done on those deff koptas ?

The white plastic stuff isn't sculpted or printed. It's PolyStyrene (basically styrofoam without the foam) plastic, usually either in sheet or rod or tube form. It can be cut and bent and otherwise molded around for modeling, and is super cheap.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

1. Plasticard, as Anvildude said. You local hobby store should have some (or you can source it on the net)
2. There are heaps, go to youtube and search, you'll find plenty.
2a. If I had one piece of advice - use a THIN amount of vaseline on your tools... spit doesn't quite do it
2b. Start small. As primarily a space wolf player, I started by doing little wolf pelts draped over shoulders, or hanging off belts.... hair/beards, etc....
2c. Filling gaps is also a good way to get a feel for how to handle green stuff
3. I'm not sure about those defkoptas, but billowing smoke is often done with cotton or steel wool

I'm not sure where you're up to in your modelling skills, but most people start by doing weapon swaps
Then I'd say a bit of posing.... can't find an arm holding a weapon in just the right place for the stance you want? cut up 2-3 arms and join them together

I think the most important (but subtle) step for me though, was learning to use a pin vice. Really adds some strength to your conversions, and can also be used for keeping things straight
My finecast Arjac Rockfist model had a badly bent Thunder Hammer that simply refused to be straightened up. So I cut the hammer off at the hand (cutting very carefully WITH the weave of the handle wrapping), drilled right up the shaft and down into his hand with a 1mm drill bit, inserted some 1mm brass rod and then joined it back up. Now it's nice and straight - doesn't droop in the heat, and (rather amazingly) you can't even see the join
I've also used the same technique for converting company/regiment banners (these will never stay together with glue alone)

Haha, thanks man! Most of my conversions could easily pass for Nurgle, but I don't go in for the bloated fatboy look.

I wanted a model that retained a Spess Muhreen silhoutte but looked twisted & corrupt. Sort of like the Peter Jackson visual take on Orcs in the LOTR movies...IE elves twisted by Morgoth's dark magic. Anyway, the head got damaged pretty bad so I tried to rough out the helmet with plasticard & GS. Close up shot shows how crappy the work really is, but at a distance of a foot back it looks fine. I think it works nicely because the model is sort of hunched forward like there's a big weight on its back anyway.

The hard part is, what makes a conversion 'best'? The most outlandish over the top, or the one that could be mistaken for a miniature from the line? The best executed or the most imaginative? It is a hard decision to make. I can say my current favorite is my Sister Technicus. A mini that I can only use as a counts as cannoness.

I think I posted her before in a WIP thread

I have been running a jump pack Autarch for a while now and so I thought I should have something a little more WYSIWYG. He's pretty much a mishmash of a whole bunch of the Eldar Aspect Exarchs: torso and head from the Shining Spear Exarch, with added DA helmet crest; arm from Fire Dragon Exarch, arm from DA Exarch with Striking Scorpion Chainsword; legs from Howling Banshee; warp jump pack is scratchbuilt; standing on the hand from an old Wraithlord.
