That is cool as! love the look of it so far Fin :-) balancing on the small base is great it's giving me a feel of fighting on a boat or a tree top walkway!

thanks guys : )
Nerd - it's the only way you can get some room to have some action on the bases, but still hit the criteria for the Duel category. As it is, I thought the boards would be too big, but I wouldn't say no to a bit more room, but there you go. I might see if I can sneak another Gobbo lurking underneath as well...
... now have 'Under the Boardwalk' by Bruce Willis going through my head... oh dear...

FINNANNNNNN! *shakes fist* You bad man you, I'm just starting the next 2 guardians for my army and I've just been looking through the gallery for inspiration for one of them as I had a good idea for the other and what do I find? I find your pair of heavy weapon guardians which is what I had in mind for one of mine!
Thankfully I have a little more mad scientist additions planned for mine, but I thought I'd had a unique idea there and you've beaten me to it.
Anyway, it looks fantastic as all your painting does.
So as you've been there I may as well ask you a couple of questions...
a) How did you do it? which heavy weapon did you use / which sprue are they from? What additions / modifications did you do to get them holding the weapons?
b) Did you have any thoughts on how they would be played? I'm not sure if you do play and I'm only curious because I'm a long way from playing with mine.

As it turns out I appear to have somehow missed about 10-15 pages in the middle of your blog, but have now rectified that.
Good job as always.

nothing wrong with a few mad scientist ideas! Sorry I beat you to it though... although I doubt that I was the first to think of it.

I used the heavy weapons from the Corsairs upgrade pack from Forgeworld - very easy in that they're complete, separate arms. No mods needed at all
I'v never actually played... it's all about the pretty toy soldiers for me ; ) In my head, I'll play once I have an army to play with (that I'm satisfied that also looks good - here's a hint: it'll never happen lol), and that should that happen, I'll just count them as the heavy weapons team, and state which weapon I've chosen to use.
glad you enjoyed

Not a prob.

Ahh, that'll be why they look like they're meant to be held then. Cool.

That's exactly How I see my army so far, Models. But I do intend to play one day, but it's going to take a while for me to build the complete army I see in my head.

and should that happen, I'll just count them as the heavy weapons team, and state which weapon I've chosen to use.

That's what I was thinking.

Lo.

As it turned out the mad scientist in me got a little carried away with a simple task of "a guardian with a heavy weapon" and he ended up quite different to what your's looked like...

Dear Dakka Chums

Please forgive me for not posting in such a long time (at least, it feels like a very long time), but I have totally lost my hobbying mojo. I look at my hoobying desk, and see the Dark Eldar and their bases, and I know i SHOULD be working on them, but just don't have the motivation to do anything about it. I could blame several things for this: the winter weather putting a dampener on things, several bouts of illness that have left me feeling tired and listless, a fairly serious medical scare that left little room for other things (panic over, but it was worth getting it checked out), and work being shittier than ever. All these things combined have dried up my creative juices. I really hope I can get them flowing again soon - any suggestions on how I could do this would be very gratefully received!

Hanging on in there

Fin

Hang in there dude.

Sometimes you just need to take a break from things. If it's not grabbing you and doesn't feel fun then don't force it.

If there's something else that does it for you in the mean time, do that. You'll soon miss the models and we'll be waiting for you and your lovely painting when you come back.

Sounds like a bit of a rough spell there, finnan. Sorry to hear it!

I'm sure you know this, but working on projects because you SHOULD usually yields results that SHOULD be better

Whenever I need some 40k inspiration, I pick up a Black Library book. In fact, I think I've started a few armies because I read a good 40k book

Rawson speaks the truth! sometimes focusing not on the actual models but the world of 40K and the fluff and imagery can yield a much greater influx of inspiration for your hobby!

if you feel you 'should' be doing something then you really shouldn't be doing anything :-) it should feel like you can't wait to do some more! that's when you get back into it and do some great work mate!

you need some literature advice to get the inspiration? :-)

Sorry to hear that, fin. I recently experienced the same thing, as we all do time to time, and it's no fun. Firstly, your not alone so that might cheer you up a bit. Secondly I've found a cure for myself which a few people touched on here, it might help you. I won't quote it here because a) it's difficult on my phone and b) I think it's quite long but I'll direct you to the opening statements of my 'Nid blog. I hope my newly written introduction will help you in your quest for inspiration and motovation. If it doesn't help then just enjoy some hobby down time and do something, anything you enjoy.

Good luck, bud.

hi Axlangel : )
the recipe for Iryllith was, as far as I remember, a basecoat of Ulthuan Grey, and then probably a wash of some form of blue - vague I know, but I'm still using the old washes... so probably Asurmen Blue. Then I go straight in with thinned down (VERY thinned down!) white... either Skull white or Ceramite White, I haven't noticed too much difference in them once they've been watered down, and then just build up the layers nice and slowly to pure white.
The loincloth I based with Skink Blue and then again worked my way back up to pure white.

White is hard to do because it's so DULL to do! It requires patience, so take your time : )

Hey FInnan thanks for all the hep , I am right now painting up some spectres, not exactly in your recipe but a small variation to fit me. I cant get the perfect finish like you have but its close enough for me . I am only 13 tho and still have much to learn in painting. But anyway Thanks

Automatically Appended Next Post:
right, slight movement on the hobbying front... some warm up painting has happened, and I THINK the DEldar bases are ready to be undercoated - I had to sand down the bottom of the base for sword and whip guy and figure out where he'd go and drill a hole for the pin. I now need to drill the hole for the flying stand for Trinity Kick girl, and they'll be ready to go...

Bases undercoated - yey!

I used a couple of different blues - the blue on the sashes is a lot brighter, and that was the Skink Blue.

If you have a look in the New & Rumours forum, you might have seen a thread started about the cancellation of the European Games Days, and possibly the Australian one too. I was a little surprised at this, but not totally shocked considering the economic climate - it must cost an incredible amount to organise, set up, run and pull down a show like that.
My immediate thought, however, was the impact it would have on Golden Demon in the UK. Other Dakka chums have commented on that thread that the European painters will just enter into other painting competitions. I wouldn't see it as a stretch that they would enter into the UK GD. I'm not against this, I think it'd be great - I've always been blown away by the French and Spanish painting in particular. However... I wouldn't even dare put myself up to their standard, and if they did enter, that would make the competition even tougher... I'm a little bit ashamed to say that the thought that ran through my head was "Why should I even bother now?".
As many of you might know, I put a lot of effort and time and energy (both physical and emotional) into entering GD last year, and I had significant plans to enter this year... which were already wavering. I'm not sure what to do now. My hobbying mojo wasn't exactly strong anyway, and now... ? Is even more pressure on to perform to an even higher standard? Do I just go back to painting for fun, but miss that external motivation (and validation)?
Worrying times, my chums. Is this another bit of the GW empire crumbling away? I don't think I'd even like to say.
Anyway, those are my (confused) thoughts at the moment, just putting 'em out there.

Hmm... personally I think you're going about it the wrong way mentally.

I think your stuff is great, but painting minis is an all too subjective art. Consequently, you shouldn't really be entering a competition like GD expecting to win. You can only try and capture the attention (and imagination) of the judges.

You did this last year with your Eldar Wraithlord, which got a "commended" or some such. Who's to say that on another day when the judges may have been in a different frame of mind, that it wouldn't have won?
