Well, it IS sort-of a campaign. One of the guys is running an Apoc campaign based on IA's "Raid on Kastorel Novum" and the ork players have decided the the Big Boss for the year is going to be decided by a series of 1500 pt "clan blattles" for supremacy within the ork horde. So we fight each other, 1500 pts, 1 CAD, same mission each time. Person with the most points leads the Waaaagh.

That is an absolutely fantastic idea! This, people, is 40k done right!

Looking forward to the game pics. Ork games are always great fun, it's a real shame that there's no Greenskin players in my current gaming group that I know of.

OK, a bit of a mini battle report for you...

"The grey day began like so many others... filled with routine, however this day was more than that... it held the promise of waaaaagh! ... and also... loot! Get the loot, defeat a rival clan, grow the waaaagh. It's was a very good day to be an ork!"

The Battle:
- DOW deployment
- 1500 pts
- single CAD or some formation I've never heard of
- The Relic (10 pts), Kill Points (5 pts), STW (3 pts), first blood & line breaker (1 ea)
- night fight first turn

Deployment
Boss Rukkstomp placed his entire force (save two units of outflanking deffkoptas) in or around a large ruin in the center of the battlefield, close to the relic. Lootas, grot infantry and kans on the inside, trukks loaded with boyz, burnas, nobz and tankbustas on the outsides. Boss Gitsplitta set his artillery units high up in some ruins on Rukkstomp's right, along with some biker nobs and gretchin as support. His heavy assets... grot tanks, megatank and meganobz in a big squiggoth were deployed opposite the opposing force, hoping to blunt Rukkstomp's dash for the relic and claim it for themselves.

Turn 1
In the gloom of the early morning, Boss Rukkstomp bellowed and his warband moved forward. The roar of engines and howls of his boys announcing their violent intent. Everything moved forward at top speed, eschewing shooting for firmly establishing control of the middle of the battlefield and the relic. The semi-darkness prevented any effective shooting from taking place... even by ork standards!

With his enemy in charge range, Boss Gitsplitta ordered his Bad Moons forward. His panzers moved to get better firing arcs and the mighty squiggoth trundled towards the objective, eyeing an enemy trukk full of boyz as it ran.

Artillery rained down on Rukkstomp's forces and the squiggoth & meganobz charged the two trukks full of boys by the relic. When all was said and done, 4 of 5 trukks were either smoking ruins or immobilized and many boys had been killed.

Turn 2
Rukkstomp was not the least bit intimidated. Those trukks had gotten his boys half way to the enemy's lines... that was close enough. He ordered an all-out assault on Gitsplitta's center, and by the time the smoke cleared.. the meganobz, squiggoth and grot tanks had all been cleared from the field. Aside from a single big mek and a belching, wheezing, rattling contraption manned by grots... he was in complete control of the center of the battlefield AND the relic.

To say Boss Gitsplitta was dispirited doesn't quite cover it. He had lost more than 1/3 of his army and 2/3 of his assault capability in the first flash of combat. Remembering however, a quote from that great humie leader Teeadoor Rowsenfelt who said; "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.", he carried on. The one thing working in his favor was that the first round of shooting had left his opponent's forces rather immobile and in small, scattered units. Leave it to his grot gunners to make a "messy" battlefield. "Lets clean dis mess up boyz!" he growled, as he and his mates fired up their bikes & ran down a small unit of burna boyz whose trukk had been wrecked by artillery fire. Luckily enough, his air support arrived and while the shooting wasn't as spectacular as the previous turn... there was continued attrition of the enemy's ranks.

Turn 3
Rukkstomp's forces continue to move to the center of the battlefield to wrap their iron grasp (spearheaded by two killa kans) around the relic. A group of three missile-armed deff koptas that had come in on Git's left in turn 2 to take some pot-shots at the Gitsplitta's nob bike squad decided to charge... and were introduced to "The Gitsplitta" (the war boss' kustom PK, from which he took his name). Shooting is generally ineffective but Rukkstomp himself along with a slew of nobs, his pain boy and big mek with KFF charge in and wipe out one of Gitsplitta's two artillery units. Git's big mek had moved from the dead squiggoth into the wreck of one of the enemy's trukks, where he was charged by the two remaining kans. What ensued was a comical combat where the kans swung haplessly over and over again at the mek and missed... with the mek having no ability to damage them back. He sure kept them busy though, at least for a while.

Gitsplitta's response was to unload anything and everything that could fire on Rukkstomp and his nobs, with the coupe de grace' being delivered by Gitsplitta himself with his mighty power klaw. This came at no small cost however as Gitsplitta's bike escort was beaten down and he himself took a wound.

Turns 4-6
(I know this sounds ridiculous but I don't have any pics and I think I can summarize it pretty well without.)
Over the next few turns, Rukkstomp's forces continued to press the center while Gitsplitta's continued to monopolize on their shooting superiority. The kans finally finished off Git's big mek... only to be charged and wiped out by Gitsplitta himself, who was in-turn charged and wiped out by a nob with a PK and a couple of boys (he wiped them out as well). The shelling from the artillery kept pounding any unit that got anywhere near the relic and/or the lootas castled up in Ruckstomp's center... putting several units to flight as well as imposing significant casualties. The grot megatank had rolled up onto the relic, making it impossible for Rukkstomp's forces to claim it as they weren't objective secured (formation limitation)... UNLESS they took out the megatank. As a result a lot of fire was directed its way... and the bits blown off... though many... were nothing important, thus the megatank survived! (i.e. I made all my invuls) Git's couldn't claim it either obviously as he'd parked a tank on it... but he could contest it just fine.

By the time the end game came... both clans were leaderless and shot to hell. Rukkstomp's war host was now being lead by a runtherd. That warhost consisting of one full-strength grot unit and one badly damaged grot unit that was falling back. Gitsplitta's was in better shape overall, but not when it came to successfully completing the primary mission. He had two in-tact grot squads, one of which had spent the entire game getting into the opponent's deployment zone, a unit of 3 lobbas, a dakka jet and the grot megatank. So the only "boots on the ground" were very tiny ones.

Turn 7
Both grot units make a b-line for the relic. Rukkstomp's grots need to get rid of Gitsplitta's grots, because the latter are objective secured!

The valiant Rukkstomp grots charge into battle with their diminutive adversaries!

Challenges are issued and accepted! (you might recognize that runtherd on the right)

Brutal brother vs. brother combat ensued... but in the end, Rukkstomp's gretchin were victorious!

Unfortunately for the mighty gretchin (and Rukkstomp's hope for victory)... the captain of "Da Turpitz", now in command of Gitsplitta's army... backed up a smidge and blasted them into a fine red & green mist. :(

Epilogue:
As the dakka jet pilot banked away to head back to his airfield, he could see the carnage below. A lone "camouflaged" battle tank of grot construction stood nearly undamaged in the middle of the field. He could just make out a rather unhinged looking grot on the observation deck, jumping up and down and waving around what looked to be a teeny-weeny power klaw. Straggling gretchin were staggering out of cover, looting bodies and preparing for the rather daunting job of cleaning up the mess.

"Weedy gits..." he mumbled as he set course for home and a tall pint of fungus beer.

Thanks guys, it was indeed a very fun game and an enjoyable battle report to write up.

I was challenged last night by yet another would-be ork Big Boss. Don't have a date set yet but it'll have to happen soon.

Very cool report. Nice to see you guys wipe each other out and have a close finish to boot. Good luck in moving up the warboss leader board!
Do you have to play the same list or do you get a chance to tweak it?

BATTLE FOR ORK SUPREMACY #2
Gitsplittta's Grots vs. Warboss StaZ' Iron Horde

The Battle:
- DOW deployment
- 1500 pts
- single CAD or some formation I've never heard of
- The Relic (10 pts), Kill Points (5 pts), STW (3 pts), first blood & line breaker (1 ea)
- no night fight

As Gitsplitta and his Nob escort topped the hill on their war bikes, boss StaZ' army was laid out before them. Mostly on foot, it still boasted an impressive array of dakka... flashgitz, lootas, lobbas & tank busta's... as well as two huge mobs of boyz. In the center of this massed firepower... stood the totem that was the object of this contest. Whomever could take the totem would most likely win the day. However... anything that approached the center would get blown to bitz by all that dakka. Gitsplitta thought a bit... then leaned over to his lieutenant. "Oy, send da Terpitz 'n it's panza group over dere." (he said, pointing to an area behind a ruined Inn on the right flank) Da grotz c'n 'old dat flank 'n mebby even git chewin' on dem lootas in da ruin." (The nob nodded.) "Bettah give da squiggoth to dem for back-up, but keep 'im close in case we needs 'im in da centa." (Gitsplitta paused, then squinted at the forces arrayed against him... he was brutal... but kunnin' as well.) "Artillery on da left in dat ruin, along wif some grots as foddah."

"So what's we gonna do boss?" (asked the nob)

A sly grin passed across Gitsplitta's face. "WE... is gonna start on da left 'n smash dem flash gitz, den go for da centa! By dat time da dakka over dere should be weeded out a bit."

"Plans a good'un boss!" (replied the nob)

Deployment:
My opponent Tom's army had an astounding amount of heavy firepower, making this a head scratcher for me from the start. He opts to deploy and go first, putting his artillery (3 lobbas) in the center flanked by two huge squads of boys. Lootas (10) and a large bike squad (10) are on his left, flash gits (10) and tankbustas (10) in a trukk on his right. I'm in a spot. I'm used to having a bit more shooty than my ork opponents, but Tom's list is an entirely different class of shooty. Not only does Boss StaZ have the edge in numbers... he's also got a significant edge in high strength weapons, all of which have range and LoS to center table and the relic. What to do???

My solution is to split my army in two and deploy the two halves in opposite corners behind cover. The grot panzers are deployed away from the tank bustas and are to take on the bike squad and hopefully move up to start punishing the lootas hiding in a ruin behind them. The squiggoth with resident meganobs gives them some close support, but I want to keep it towards the center so it can make a dash for the relic if need be. My six lobbas (2 squads) are in an identical ruin in the opposite corner of the board from his lootas (and out of range). Their purpose is to take out the tank busta's trukk early and then pound whatever approaches the center of the table. Gitsplitta and his nobs camp out behind the artillery and will storm the left edge of the board with the aim of taking out the flash gits and the (hopefully on-foot) tankbustas before heading to the center and the relic.

... and it's at this point that I realize that somehow I've deleted the first 3 turns worth of photographs... $^%*#@!!!

Well, here's turn four, I'll do my best to bring you up to speed... I think this is the beginning of my half of turn 4.

You can see my artillery in the ruin in the lower left, it had done a decent job all day of weakening StaZ' units so they could be dealt with more easily by my smaller, more elite units. Tom's own artillery knocked out a grot squad of mine on turn one, earning him first blood. On the right, my tanks did manage to repulse the bike squad, killing 6 of 10 and making them fall back. The bikes eventually rallied though (but not in time to have a big effect on the game). My grot mega tank killed itself with a "gets hot" roll from a KMB.

On the left flank my little nob bike squad with Gitsplitta had done very well. They charged forward and with some artillery support, took out the flash gits in two combat phases. The dakka jet came in and finally killed the truck (yellow battle wagon in the pic) that I'd been wasting a lot of firepower trying to stop. The guys emergency deployed in the wreck but were eventually taken down by artillery fire.

The squiggoth had broken away from the right flank and was heading towards the center along with a small group of grots that had come in from reserve. I had gotten lucky so far in that Tom's lootas just weren't having much luck shooting, but as you can see from the first pic... two huge mobs of orks were converging on the relic, including a mega-armored big mek w/ KFF and his warboss.

I must admit that up to this point, I was feeling pretty good about life. My plan had basically worked as I'd managed to thin out a lot of his firepower and was now moving in force to the center.

What isn't shown in that first photo is that my 3 meganobs exited the squiggoth and scorcha'd the big mob at the relic for a couple of casualties. Then the charges happened... well, sort of. The Nob bikes had swung around the trukk to charge the big mob (say... 4" charge). They failed. The sqiggoth was the speedster in the group.. *just* making a 5" charge... and the meganobs managed to make... just exactly... a 1" charge (due to terrain they could have failed it).

In assault, the squiggoth & 3 meganobs manage to kill the megamek and several boys before my meganobs are wiped out by a PK themselves. The shoota boys fail morale and after rolling on the mob rule table, fall back to within 1" of the board edge!

.... and THIS is where everything goes to heck in a handbasket...

On Tom's turn, the fleeing shoota boys rally. They snap-fire (24 shots) and roll 11 sixes to hit and seven wounds. I then fail every saving throw except 1 (even using my lucky stick 3x)... leaving the nob bikes wiped out and Gitsplitta down to 1 wound.

The lootas finally get their act together and put 3 wounds on the squiggoth, who then gets charged by the second huge mob of orks. He survives their initial attacks, then on his turn... he wiffs completely. Doesn't roll above a 2 on his attacks, then rolls a "1" on the stomp table for his 11 stomp hits. He then goes down to a PK... leaving a bewildered big mek with KFF staggering out of the howdah of the fallen beast.

In my half of turn 5 (which turned out to be the last turn), I had to get him off of the relic. Luckily the second mob was as strung out as the first, so I could charge them without actually fighting the whole thing, especially after punching holes in the center of it with the lobbas. I charge with the only two figures I have left... the big mek and the warboss (in that order). My warboss challenges even though it's certain suicide... but getting points for warlord kill (it would be mutual) is better than no points at all.

When its over, both bosses are dead, my Big Mek is still locked in combat but no one owns the relic.

Final Score:
Boss StaZ: Secondary (kill points), STW, first blood = 9 points
Boss Gitsplitta: STW = 3 points

Epilogue:
Very frustrating game. Tom was a great opponent and he had an army that really made me think... so that wasn't the problem. To have a plan, stick to it and have it basically work.... until the very end where a few dice rolls just completely bend you over... Soooo frustrating.

I imagine this is how Norm felt last week. So I guess turn-about is fair play.

Next game is tomorrow. Think I'll bring a real camera for once.

Or, you know, just have a relaxed fun game. Whatever!

I always have a great time playing John (my next opponent), but he is a highly skilled, highly competitive gamer. Right now he's on a campaign to prove he can make a very good, reasonably "competitive" ork list, even given the current state of the codex. Thus... he's kind of handing some of the rest of us our butts.

I... fight with grots. It's what I do. That being said I *did* intend to tweak my list a little bit after the first game with Norm, I just didn't get around to it before the game with Tom came up rather unexpectedly.
