Those shields really do make the models, great work!

If you wanted to really get far, far too into the little buggers, I recall reading that usually only warlords (very important people) got to have their own shield patterns, and basically allowed their underlings to have what the lord wanted. So a lord's symbol might be the crow with wings spread, and his personal guard and buddies might use that device, but then his other levy or less special guys maybe just got a crow sitting, or just the base color or something. That could be a cool theme if you were making a whole warband/army of shields, and tied each group to a specific hero like that.

I've been very busy painting walls magnolia, but took a break today to do some modelling.

First is my converted skeleton cavalry - I'll be doing more of these. I've had them in mind for ages. I think I'm even going to make them stirrups:

Im slowly plodding forward on the dwarf banner. I'm thinking of painting a tree on it.

Finally this odd, oriental looking chaos thug. A real dog of a figure, but with some interesting detail. I like his studded trousers. His helmet is well silly though.

Had a go at some stirrups on the next one:

Nice work. One thing that always bothered me about those old horses was the fact that the guys were just perched up there, not saddles, no nothing. It’s hard enough to stay on a flesh and blood horse, but just smooth bones seemed impossible. I guess they could just hook a foot into the ribcage to brace themselves.

Interesting mix of parts. I like the shield, far better then the old rounds the horsemen came with originally.

Parts mix is mainly due to making do with what was lying around, I hope to tie it all together with the GS work. The shields are just perfect though.

Horseman number two is getting a GS flag on his lance, and he needs a helmet.

As you can see number three is going to need boots...

Thanks. Skeleton cavalry definitely needed bridles.

Well that's me all sculpted out for the day. I managed to give horseman 2 a chainmail hat, not very well done, my first go at chainmail. And I remembered an extra strap that goes over the head.

Wow, you are on a very nice burst of creativity. Those Skellie riders look wonderful.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

I love me some skeletons. If I'd ever gotten into Fantasy, I was going to somehow build a skellie army.

That's a pretty nifty idea that seems obvious in hindsight. I can't wait to see a whole unit of these guys.

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

As someone who's slowly building up his own Skeleton Cavalry, I have to wonder what the AoS is gonna do with Undead. It seems like the new 'rules' for army building would allow for better use of them, but then again, who knows.

Amazing work on the GSing of those Skeletons, and such a good idea on those shields that I'm going to shamelessly steal.

Thanks girrafex and JB.

Valhalla its never too late. You could always just get one or two (but one or two is never enough)

Joshin japan I've run outa horses so it'll just be three for now. Waiting for some cheap horses to appear on feebay.

Anvildude if GW don't keep skeletal horsemen then they have truly lost their way. I don't think they would be daft enough to get rid of skeletons - they use less materials than most models so must be a profit-maker

Azazelx - you mean the dark elf skull shields - there's loads of em kicking about for sale because they used to give you extra of them with the kit and you don't need them for crossbowmen. .

Oh and here is today's kitbash. My huge norse dwarf regiment needed a musician so I hollowed out one limb of a goblin bow and fitted it into a carefully carved notch in this guys hand. He has arms from the knights of the white wolf kit, which seem a great fit for dwaves, and a miltia sword because I thought a hammer looked like it would get in the way of the horn.

I wish I had the creativity to see something and realize how to make it better, like putting reins, bridles, saddles and stirrups on a horseman who obviously needed them, even if he happens to be epidermically deficient or how to make a musician out of a bow.

Those are all excellents..

That's a fantastic kitbash for a horn.

Also, what's interesting is that GW is just about the only supplier of skeleton horseman miniatures anywhere that I've been able to find, aside from a German website selling beautifully detailed but really expensive pewter models.

I know more people have posted replies but I can't read it because dakka is broken... Hmmm blasted technology, we need a tech-priest to fix this.

Thanks gitsplitta - that's high praise, you know your stuff when it comes to the kitbash.

Mostly, on my phone.

Damn fine. You can always tell when a conversion's "right" when it just looks like a "real" miniature in the first place, if you know what I mean.

I could have sworn I commented on that pic earlier.

I love the creativity you show in adding things which, in hindsight, seem obvious, like the saddles/stirrups/bridles for the skellie cav, and the way you made the musician.

Looks like its fixed now.

I find if I keep a few projects on the go I never get bored. So I went back to finish the flag.

Changed my mind about the tree. Too elvish. Mountains are what dwarves like.

It needs runes and knotwork round the edge. Maybe a dragon...

Very Tolkein-esque. I love the banner. I'm sure the scrolls and knotwork would be awesome as well. What about spelling something out in runes around the edge?
