Thats why my area is so big. Because the Labyrnith is going to be massive!

But Alas, I do not want to ruin the landscape. I will ruin the underground. But not the mountains or the valleys. I am mostly protecting the land because I know people will destroy their land. And build giant castles. Hence why I am not going to go ridiculous in terms of scale. My area is suppose to be wild and unkept. Because I like it like that. I might make it even more prettier, and a bit safer. I might add small farm houses. Small Villages, but I will only do that on places that look terrible (I.E. the Birch forests are ugly)

Portals make this thing pretty fast.

Anvil, are you suggesting some kind of Great Underground Railway connecting the three domains? If we built it around Height 10 we'd end up with a load of diamonds....

Either that or an overground that went across the sea. That'd look pretty spectacular.

Why not both? With the updates to minecarts, a rail system will actually be capable of competing with Nether travel for sheer speed. Stormwarriors has his castle in the area as well.

I say, underground railway network working off a single major trunk... (if we can carve out a massive tunnel, say, 3 or 4 times bigger than needed, then suspend a dual rail line in the middle, that'd look awesome). Then, aboveground, we just keep expanding our respective areas, and build a massive "Highway" along the ocean by them... Potentially directly above the route taken by the underground rail, with connecting stairways at outposts along the route. We could then also build towns of various kinds at those outposts, further expanding the "Megacity" aspect of things. And also giving us a use for the cobblestone we're both sure to continue to mine.

Where do you think we should build it? I'm thinking West of the Mesa, but either East or in-line with your place. Then we'd need it either East or West of Stormwarrior's place, unless he wants it to run under/through his domain.

If you can figure out an x,z value (and why not Height 10? I like Bedrock fog anyways) I could start on a station on my end and we could both tunnel towards each other. I think it'd be neat to get a proper, safe connection between our realms sooner rather than later.

No, its better to place the minecart system in the Nether. Remember that over world distances are 8 times greater than the nether - thats 8 times the resources that we'll need.

On the first multiplayer server I ever played on, I built an underground railway at bedrock from the spawn zone all the way to my island... 2 km away. And then Mojang updated the game, fixed the minecart collision booster glitch and broke my 2 km rail system.

NEVER AGAIN

If there are multiple buildings spread out over an area, we could have a nether portal in the centre and rail tracks that link you from the portal to the various locations. But the main long distance "highway" linking the site to the spawn zone should be in the nether I think.

But it wouldn't look as cool in the Nether! In the overworld, we could have water decorations and stuff... Plus, it would be easier to carve from stone than cart stone into the Nether to build with.

'sides, the Nether system isn't really a good one for direct place-to-place linkages- we've tried before, and it just ends up a huge tangled mess.

Which is exactly what I said.

If its going to be several km's from the spawn, then place the long distance rail linking the site with the spawn zone in the Nether, to cut down the distance 8 times, speed up the travel time and to save on resources.

Then, once the rail reaches the destination, add secondary rail lines in the Overworld to connect the portal to the various Arena's and Battlefields.

How about one of the 2 deserts to either side of the spawn? If someone chooses a region (not limited to deserts) and tells me the desired dimensions, I can flatten it and fill in the ground with the desired common chunk. If you want a big region that you can fit mini forts in and such, I can also put a small wall up around it to keep mobs out. I have a ton of stone for bricks that I only smelted as a way to get rid of the annoyingly large amounts of lava in the areas I'm digging up without wasting it.

Mmm, terraforming. I wonder how many people prefer building on top of the natural landscape with a few changes, compared to people who just want to make a clean slate.

When i started on my area of the map i originally was in a desert as can still be seen under my walls. 20,000 blocks of removed sand later i had the beginnings. Then we had our first server transfer so i had it copied and pasted to a plains biome and flattened more areas around it. i will eventually fix the jagged terrain as it bothers me and i have started on a revamp of my walls as they are a bit plain.

Unfortunately progress is slow because there is a layer of obsidian underneath the layer of stone that needs to be removed.

I am in, but it won't be sooner. I've not been online in a couple of months. I am currently mired in marking for the next couple of weeks, then need to get my head down and finish my PhD by the end of August... I guess I will try to get one day off a week though, and try to MC for a couple of hours of each of those.

(Anyone who's not answered my surveys yet -- see sig -- can help out with the PhD part by doing so! More WoW and 40K respondents needed, especially...)

I love the plans though.

Thraka, is Beanland anywhere near the route Anvil was suggesting (running north-south, on the eastern side of the map, mostly in the sea)?

What? I think you're conflating two different conversations. Ian and I are talking about connecting Chasmholm and the Grey Mesa together, possibly with Ma55terfett and Stormwarrior's places, because we're all in a relatively straight line on the East side of the map. I think you're thinking about the community initiative to create PVP areas. For those, we'd be using the current Nether Hub and Trunk tunnels.

I'd be fine with connecting it. But It should be at least scenic XD.

Plus I figured out a redstone door that is quite confusing and took me two hours to test on the server with. Its far from perfect but it is a button activated door. So it opens after I press a button. Using this idea I am going to put at the main entrances of my City.....

Which I will start carving once I get all my resources pooled together.

We are always scenic, worry not. Bear in mind that the Great North Nether Tunnel is my project.

Strictly speaking we should probably finish the other 3 Nether Tunnels to the same standard (if not necessarily precisely the same style) before we start yet another massive project!

True, true. Definitely the East trunk, as it's probably the most dangerous at this point.

I need a whole ton of Netherbrick, though, dangit. And there wasn't nearly enough Wrack in the way of the tunnel.

Also, I'm reaching a point where I'm starting to work through my cobblestone stocks. Dang. Gonna need a new giant excavation project.

Also, need to finish up the rest of the 4 giant Nether portals in my basement in the overworld, then get the obby for their pairs in the Nether.

Say, does Dakka have any tunnel decoration advice? I finished an incredibly boring and pointless 400 block long tunnel.
http://i.imgur.com/sSJkPuU.jpg
So yeah, 3x3 with stairs at the top corners.

But since there's lava in the tunnel that I intend to get rid of using furnaces, I could stand to redecorate while I wait. Any suggestions?

I am intrigued!
I hope the rest of the doors aren't too much of a hassle to build!

With the PvP Arenas, I'd be glad to lend a redstoning hand if it's needed, or even just an aesthetic hand.

May have to wait a while before I can truly get into it, since I have a fair few assignments due soon (yay physics and co.)

West tunnel has been improved but was not expanded to be 5x5 because of some fairly major tunnels already connected that I didn't wish to damage or change without permission of the owners... Now I'll admit it's a little bland... Cobble stone and stone brick with stone brick stair "roof supports" and iron decorations... If people wish to improve it great! But I can't think of a way of doing it myself... If people wish it to be wider it's going to need a lot of permissions of west tunnel residents. Which might not be necessarily easy...

The width is not a problem with the West tunnel but it is a bit too low in places to ride a horse through, especially near the staircase at the start.
