Yup, that makes sense. Still want to watch that it's sufficiently pointy, as shas points out.

ah, I see...due to aerodynamics...would you say that in the theme of steam punk aerodynamics is really an issue?

Again, I'm with shas - and, oddly, yes about aerodynamics, as it's pseudo-scientific and also more aesthetically pleasing.

Vik, even Steampunkc tried to have them look good, of course the old movie "Master of the world " had the same exact taper on both ends of his airship

Or more like

Vik, have you thought about using plastic funnels for the front or back of the blimp. You can get cheap large ones at the home improvement store. You can keep the tip on or off for ease of modeling.

That is some very tidy cardboard work

Also I concur it should be more pointy at the front and stubbier at the back

I think that if you have all those helicopter blades, there is no reason for a blimp right?

And I think if he made all those helicopter blades by himself he might have created a blimp he won't show. The vik blimp, never to soar.

well... that finally cut it... I think my next big white whale project (Ahab anyone )... needs to be a big flying leviathan of propellers...that is settled! (no seriously... that certainly wetted my appetite! so thanks shaso...!)

and theo... probably exactly what would be the case... but you need to see my next update... to call it big would be the understatement of the day

ok... here goes...

new update and it is a big one...

first I show you in this spoiler the finished build (sans rivets...) of the blimp together with a mock up put together pic with the gondola...

Spoiler:

and this is how I built the middle section and put two cones and the middle section together to make the whole blimp...:

and if you think that was a whole lot to fill an update with....naawwwww.... not enough!

incoming supply drop...:

we went shopping... my wife was at a market today to get herself some new clth to sew it up for new clothings...
and I was in my favourite artshop... to get me some new tools and materials...:

some new rollers for paint and whatnot...some cardboard mushrooms, new blades for the knife, and some half spheres of wood in different sizes for a son related project

a hexagon shape template to make this shape way more controlled and easier to do...

some new brushes...a stippling brush even, some pipettes for mixing colors better, and a new kind of paint... it is a 3D paint that should puff up a bit to later on be used as a means to simulate welding works...

and I finally gave in and got me some foam core A4 sheets to play with... we´ll see what I can do with these....

and what I still wont show you is that I started building weapons for the portholes... it is some kind of Vickers related weapon system....wait and see

cheers, vik

Okay, that is looking impressive! My only modificiation would be get another 6 empty pringle cans and make it a longer blimp for that uber gondola.

On another note, saw a very English speaking German movie called Extinction last night, very interesting premise

what was the movie about?

and now I am puzzled... the can piece was something else completely... a would be blimp... that will be used for something else... the new blimp is pure cardboard...pure cardboard...

Oh, I thought the cans were the inner workings of the blimp, if it is all new construction, well it can be added to!

Fictitiously named bio-agro corps makes speedy retro virus to alter crops, soon it mutates and then crossbreeds the genes of all things making vulnerable peeps into what at first appear to be zombies, but they are in fact Mutants, some more plant than animal, others still animal based. They had some doing Parkour, so not the usual flesh munchers.

Not where I should be

That is perfect. Absolutely beautiful.

Oh and I second the idea for the crew being from the Pequod. Just see a Queequeg Harpoon in hand leaning out a porthole.

oh....I had not got the mobby dick reference from graven in the first read... I think a steampunky Ahab and crew of the pequod would be a really cool thing to do!

and thanks cam!

and shaso... whoa... that sends shivers down my spine... I have recently seen some footage of the WWZ movie... man... that was freaky...and to be fair... from what I have seen what companies do to our food already... it is like a four year old son playing with his fathers gun... there is bound to be some hurt involved...
and I wouldn´t know where to add that then?...tho I need to see how to connect the two parts... that will be a small challenge really...

and yes... for the hexagon build of the blimp all new materials were used, so the can build is something else entirely ...

Stretching the design would make the Gondola look supported by plenty of lift, of course the alternate is the look of the Albatross with the mulit heli-blades.

Cool supply drop vik I especially like that hexagon tool, where did you find it again?

The cardboard blimp looks even better than before, but I liked the inside out look more.

Looks like you had a very productive supply trip! Glad you like the idea for crew, sorry if the reference was a little obtuse. It would be very cool to have a robotic Cal Me Ishmael (as well as giving a nice nod to Judge Dredd - a gold star if you can work out why). I love the finished model build, looks great. The pirates in Spartan's Uncharted Seas have balloons and this made me think of that straight away (in a good way).

World War Z looks fun, especially as Glasgow doubled for philly and I know a lot of folk that were involved as both extras and crew. There's an argument that zombie movies reflect a sense of alienation and hopelessness in society, and thinking about your 4yr old w/ a gun analogy I found myself mulling that over again. The sticking point for me is the recent spate of fast zombies. Hmm.

Anyway, OT, looking forward to more steampunkery!

I liked the inside out look better... and i personally think the blimp needs more length really. But man, what a build!! Love it Vik!

Eh...
Inmygravenimage: That's sweet dude. I bet her ass is bad...
Camkierhi - What a load of rubbish... Amazing!
Rogue Wolves - Its rediculous how much character you pack into those guys
Skalk Bloodaxe: I know those will be awesome when finished, but right now they look like crackers.

i have planned to add a bit of more skeleton look to the blimp already... so the inside out look will in a way be back again...(and damn... i liked it too)

not obtuse, i am just sometimes a careless reader ,i just googled a bit about moby dick again and got the referrence of that... beeing one of the damned few who hasn´t read the book and only know the old gregory peck movie (which is damn good i may add...in my view) i didn´t recall the main character to be called ishmael...but why him then to be a robot? i think Queequeg would be better for a robot? after all the slight superior skills as a whalecatcher would be reperesented as a robot quite a bit?... and it would be cool to have a harpoon launching device done as a robots prostetics... (and i did´t get the judge dredd referrence... now i do feel dumb as a door nail...thank you so very much )

coming back to the zombie discussion, i think the transformation of the shamblers to runners is even showing us the more pressing nature of that, as you well put it :
There's an argument that zombie movies reflect a sense of alienation and hopelessness in society
it shows that the alienationeffect is only growing faster and stronger... thus the running and more aggressive z´s...at least thats how i understand it...

ha... second (third) one for the inside out in favor...i have to see what can be done for that and the hexagon tool i got from the artshop... i bet you will get it at your local shops too... funny thing is the guy at the checkout said it was brand new item in the range...

MeatShield wrote:That's too bad. I really wanted to see the weapon systems that you have been working on.

will do some shots today... have no fear...... by the way... i always wonder where i have seen your avatar pic before?...also i will do some much needed scaleshots as i think all you deem the blimp a bit smaller than it actually IS...believe me...it is huge...

shasolenzabi wrote:Stretching the design would make the Gondola look supported by plenty of lift, of course the alternate is the look of the Albatross with the mulit heli-blades.

see above matey... but your insisting on more heliblades i will have to see if i have fitting parts to make engine cases...

till later
