Good work, Vik. Looking very good (and sturdy ).

I also have a very laborious idea for the slate...
Cut many (MANY) tile shapes from very thin card and then glue several together (lamination style) to make each tile. If they're not all quite the same shape/size then they will look like the layers of slate...
I don't think even I would do it that way though.

I think just cut them from a suitable thickness of card (the kind that is layered) and then remove a layer or two from the occasional corner to make them look chipped.

not yet... in the end it will hopefully look like a true log cabin... but I am not that good at painting something that actually looks like wood....

Vik, for painting wood you want to find a few images of the colour you want to achieve. You want to pictures to be as large as possible and be as close to the wood as possible, so you can have a very close look at the variety of colours that make up the "wood colour" from a distance. You'll be surprised at the number of colours involved in a simple bit of brown wood.

Also (not to blow my own trumpet) have a look at where I was doing all the wood colour tests in my main blog and in my hut tutorial for an explaination of the process.

And, as you are painting actual wood, I think you'll want to use quite thin, watery, paint and kind of "stain" it. Then you'll keep the woodgrain that it already has and make your life easier.

very good helpful ideas, the one with the big pictures I will definitely use...also when painting starts your thread will also be used for reference... that was a definite from the start
I just fear I will ruin my building work with my painting work...

Have you considered making a beam with ribs and covering for the roof?

You don't have to be afraid. I found that painting wood (as well as rust) can be very forgiving, especially if you are going for an older look.

Washes and dry-brushing was all I used on my sprue-wood. Slap it on in patches, let it run, no need to tidy up slips, build up colour after colour, let them bleed and blend together (no sharp edges to the colours) and dry-brush the highlights.

Add grey to your colours to get a washed out look (got that from Weety, she does lovely wood )
