I can't decide if I want to play that game (Saints Row IV i mean) or not... It looks either just crazy enough to be awesome or just a notch too crazy for me to be able to enjoy it. Hard to say from just the videos.

If you liked SR3, you should enjoy 4. The storyline has the same over-the-top humor from 3 and added the new superowers to keep the game fresh (since you are playing in the same city from 3, they had to do something to keep things feeling new). There are metatextual jokes aplenty and more pop culture references than you can shake a stick at. The tone is pretty even (not all over the place like 2 was) and Laura Bailey does the voice for Fem Boss. That last bit may not be a selling point for you, but it pretty much makes the game in my eyes. They've added a reggae station on the radio, if that's your thing.

Oh, the one downer bit is that Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For a Hero" isn't on the Mix radio station anymore. I don't know about you, but that song was the designated soundtrack to like half the missions I played in 3.

Unless they play it while I'm fighting giant robots while dressed as a giant robot, it won't be the same.

The Touch will be played at just the right moment, at full blast, while the game tells you to be.. A BADASS. Bonus points to the writers for having your character quote verbatim the lines from a certain animated movie that heavily featured the Touch.

I'm currently in the process of being enchanted by 'Braid' all over again. Had it on my old 360 and just bought it again on a whim. 'Tis a wondrous game and I have already lost two hours without even noticing

It's even eating into my 'Hearthstone' time

I've been playing a lot of Endless Legend. It's an interesting if flawed game. I love the general approach to resources, unit design, faction identity and story. However it stumbles a lot on balance, pacing, writing, providing interesting decisions. The tech tree feels to compressed, and you don't really get a sense of things changing in any meaningful way.

It's a lot of good ideas tied up with a lot of bad execution and half-finished implementations. Despite all the problems I really enjoyed it, I'd certainly say it's worth a try (at least when on sale) if you're fan of 4x in general and want to see one trying some oddball things.

I picked up Valkyria Chronicles 2 as I liked the first one enough. Though with the holidays over my gaming time will quickly shrink again.

So did WOW. Ended up getting screwed over by the latest patch, which broke a quest chain....Then the latest patch corrected it....

So all is well.

Also.
Master of Orion again. Had a super Expansionist Agressive Sillicoid, An Honorable human, The Silicoid decided to expand up to me, and now the human is as well. So I've hit the Silicoids, and will probably make peace as soon as I grab his ultra rich Tundra and homeworld, then war with humans, and then I will grab Orion.

Inferior level design to things like Blighttown? I find that hard to believe.

You're conflating quality of something with difficulty. Blighttown was designed to be a major SOB to play - it's an absolute torment, but you get something of a sense of achievement when you battle your way through against the odds, the odd rage-quit thrown in along the way!

BTW, do we have a Dark Souls/Dark Souls 2 discussion thread? Rather thank having to discuss piece-meal across other posts.

Going through my back library of games in preparation for getting an Xbox One.

Tried playing The Raven. Found the controls clunky but loved the animation. May give it a go again soon.

Darksiders II currently taking my attention. Didn't play the first one, already like the second. Very WOW character design, but it's a lively little thing.

I always go to continue Destiny, then lose interest once I see what else I have to play.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

Reinstalled X-Com: Enemy Unknown, figured I'd give it another run without the expansion and then maybe pick that up later if I was interested enough.

I'm gonna stick to normal and skip Ironman, I just don't have the time/patience for extra difficulty as I'm normally being climbed on by a toddler and other such distractions

But what about the Second Wave options? Any hidden gems in there?

Does Marathon make for a fun longer game, or does it just make research take forever and make things more boring overall?

What about the random starting stats, damage, currency output? Neat, or obnoxious?

Does the Red Fog add challenge or just get annoying? How about the automatic crits on flanking?

Thanks

I think I liked the random starting stats and weapon damage.

The automatic crits on flanking actually make the game somewhat easier, as all you have to do is out position the enemy

Red Fog is pretty annoying; the Aim penalty is pretty significant, and it doesn't appear the aliens suffer the same debuffs

The random stats are fine.

Yep. The game is still fun, as I had expected. I'm particularly amused that I have a support specialist nicknamed "Santa" as it's just particularly fitting. I'm a bit disconcerted, however, as I've already lost at least a couple of members and I think my first playthrough only saw one death overall to unexpected fast moving chrysalids... Perhaps the random damage worked in my opponents favor there, and it was a shot down the flank.

Loving Elite: Dangerous right now. I'm just mining asteroids and then a big pirate ship shows up to steal my stuff. Before he even engages me he's hounded by two federation security ships and the second they take his shields off I turn around and blow the bastard up. Thanks for the extra 17k!

Alien: Isolation. I got stuck for a bit in the first evasion set-piece, when you get the codebreaker--apart from messing up stealth and dying a lot, there's a door that opens when the scavengers appear, but no indication of which one, so it took me a few tries to find it. I like how this game really winds up the tension to screaming point. You think this would be a perfect setup for the alien to first appear, don't you? Did you notice this hiding place and all this cover? Here's a task to do that will surely trigger....nope, just messing with you! Keep guessing, smart guy.

Spoiler:
And then when you're like ok, enough false alarms, let's get this next bit done and oh crap it fell out the ceiling oh no I've forgotten which floor I came in by I can hear it oh no it's killing them all oh god i glimpsed it coming up the stairs did it see me gotta get to the door and put in the code and my hands are shaking come on come on.....

So that was fun!

"The 75mm gun is firing. The 37mm gun is firing, but is traversed round the wrong way. The Browning is jammed. I am saying "Driver, advance." and the driver, who can't hear me, is reversing. And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich."

Random damage gets a bit annoying when your sniper with laser rifle hits or 1-2 damage when she should one-shot the target.. but hell it's a squadsight in the zone sniper, she's just fine regardless. I feel like I have almost too many options right now as it is, for research and equipment, the Enemy Within stuff seems almost like too much extra from my perspective.

Trying out Space Hulk Ascension. It seems to suffer a lot from the concept of "can you figure out the most optimal way to spend your action points? If yes, have an easy time. If no, prepare to get your squad killed." I like the game but it feels kind of unpolished, plus the maps are really bloody dark! When you can not physically see which rooms connect to each other that is kind of a problem.

Just started Valkyria Chronicles. My mood has gone from, "Hey, this is a fun game." to "You know what? feth tanks." to "feth yeah, I have a tank!" in very rapid succession. Really, the only complaint I have is I wish it had better mouse control, but that's it.
