With Dragon Age Inquisition finished now, I'm not feeling any real need to get a new PC anymore. - At least, not until closer to the release date of Arkham Knight.

I am finding myself tempted to get the Sims 4 though. I don't exactly know why (though Trisha Hershberger may be to blame...)

I got The Sims 3 in a humble bundle a while back, and I pretty much only play it once every 6 months.

It's not even my type of game, normally.

Getting trolled in 'shogun 2: fall of the samurai'. Are all total war games like this? It sucks when you have 3 strong enemies one of which was an ally that totally betrayed you. It sucks because dear god the range on their boats for bombardments is ridiculous and they bombarded a ton of my buildings causing them to be in need of repair all the time and ruining some of my money production. It got really f***ing annoying.

Also one weaker enemy decided it had a shot at me and tried invading my home province with a weak army but since i barely had anything it was a hard fight. Due to the most ridiculous luck, skill and everything i managed to win the battle and rout his whole army with 3 levy infantry units and a spear levy unit. Keep in mind i was fighting 3 times the guys with all his levy infantry and 3 generals on horses (which i all killed with one spear levy esp. forcing them to fight me in the water so they couldn't get away really), my fort was mostly destroyed including gates left open and 2 enemy bombardments which i had to dodge like an MF'er. In one case i grouped his guys up around one of my gates and set fire to it which at the last few seconds i ran from and caused all his guy stuck under it to die horribly and rout not long after. Seriously a friend joked this battle was like sparta with '300'. I think i took down a force 3 times in numbers and did 3 times the amount of kills too.

The aftermath....

I've not played much of Shogun. But yeah, sometimes things can get a bit ridiculous.

Although, I'm naughty and occasionally savescum when something just downright insane happns like everyone randomly backstabbing you at once for the lulz.

Sometimes I'll reload and they won't even think about trying anything for another 20 turns.

Luckily my few powerful copper ships managed to kill most of the ships around my area. Now i just need to repair my ships. My home provinces should be mostly safe now with the exception of a samurai revolt that took place because all my crap was getting bombarded and destroyed buildings equal an unhappy populace. It's funny though because the enemy army i destroyed in that battle had a few remnants and i destroyed the ships that brought them there. Basically they either have to tread all the way back through enemy territory and possibly annoy my allies or die (both very possible) or they can go with round two which i will more likely win as my forces are being reinforced while his aren't being way deep in enemy territory. It's pretty hilarious actually.

I will admit that yeah this is one reason why i'm not too thrilled about total war. At least 'fall of the samurai' has guns and our version of 'realm divide' isn't as crappy. It's gotta tell you how much 'realm divide' sucks when an entire thread was made about it on dakka and actually managed a few pages if i remember correctly.

I'm trying to beat down the 3 bigger armies i have to deal with while only having a couple friendly and allied armies helping me. Admittedly one ally and one of my same allegiance factions sounds really powerful but against at least 3 powerful enemies and whatever d*cks decide to pick on me as i'm down similar to vultures and rats eating the scraps of something.

The visuals are cool, the sound is great, the music really fits, and fighting the giant cyborg dragon is awesome. Can't wait to play more.

Yes. I've given up ever being able to complete enough to get that STUG, but have found out where my talent lies in that game. I hate meduims, the Matilda is too slow, the battle is over before I can get there, the other one I have is a destroyer posing as a medium as it has a fixed, forward firing gun. Heavies are even worse, the standard gun on my only British heavy to date couldn't knock the skin offf a rice pudding, and I can't stand the thought of trudging through loss after loss until I can get some improvements on it - especially as you are forced to spend 2,000XP on upgrading the suspension before anything else. SPGs can be fun now I've learned to use them properly, but don't like members of my own team shooting me in the back as I make my way to position.

I run a Pz1C with all upgrades including the 40 round magazine gun,and it is a yappy terrier biting your ankles and humping your leg!

First match on the map where you start on a steep slope with the battleground in the centre, I decided to try and take out the enemy arty. Started with the church on the right hand side of me, raced down the hill angling right, but didn't see a slight rise in my path. I've never seen a Panzer reach 12 feet in the air before! OK, I blew out my own suspension on landing, but couldn't stop myself laughing for the rest of the round - which was mostly spent spectating as I was destroyed before I could effect repairs. Next time I got on that map, it was in the other direction. I took out all 3 enemy SPGs but got taken out by an enemy medium as I ran back to my own lines. Still laughing all the way.

Ok so more in the deal with shogun 2: fall of the samurai is that i've beaten back my previous enemies and nearly destroyed that traitor clan with the help of a good ally that's reached a pretty ridiculous strength.

Somehow i've managed to distract a large army for 3-5 turns that would otherwise have taken several of my provinces. The army i had coming in to help decided to have some annoying general who led most of my successful victories turning traitor and taking a good chunk of my guys with him. I killed him and the army i was supposed to fight against (making an easy fight kind of hard). He did die though so i'm doing ok. The rest of my generals are at super low negative number loyalty (with the exception of a new one at 3 loyalty) which is terrible.

Oddly enough my closest ally in these fights now has questionable integrity which is a bad sign.

It's so weird that the game currently is more about fighting that traitor clan than all the pro-shogun clans.

Most of my battles are going ok outside of naval battles which i somehow managed to lose through stupid reasons. I only have about 9-10 territories right now. So within a 6 to 7 year period i have to basically take a crap ton of territories with the emperor.

Next time i'm not gonna throw myself so far forward like that.

What difficulty are you playing FotS on? I never really had much difficulty with it; build up economy on the back provinces, rushing first towards a trade port so you get offers from other countries to be trading partners. I personally decline all offers until I get a US one, because the only real difference is the Ironclads you get to build and whilst the British Warrior Class is better than both the US and the French one, the US Roanoke is significantly cheaper, both in build price and upkeep, than the others:

British - Warrior class - 18,000 build cost - 2,250 Upkeep
French - L'Ocean class - 10,800 build cost - 1,080 Upkeep
US - Roanoke class - 7,200 build cost - 720 Upkeep
Japanese (available to everyone at some point AFAIK) - Kotetsu class - 3,600 build cost - 450 Upkeep

As you can see, you can build two Roanoke class Ironclads + a Kotetsu for the same price as a single Warrior class, and all three ships' upkeep combined is still less than the upkeep for that single Warrior. Against the AI, I find that even a single Roanoke is capable enough until the very late-game, at which point you should aim to be in control of most of the sea anyway.

Once you get a trading port and start getting mission offers, I tend to start teching towards the Armstrong Gun, so going right down the cannon line. Cannons are ridiculously OP, especially in sieges, where they can reduce the garrison to nothing on their own. I personally don't care for Gatling Guns, because by the time I have them, I also have an army full of Armstrong guns, which annihilate armies in open maps far before GGs get to fire, and are infinitely more useful in sieges.

After cannons, I try and go down the ship ammo line. Early wooden ships go up in flames easily to explosive ammo, and armour-piercing + improved armour-piercing are even better. I find that wooden ships deploying god-mode ammo is far better than copper or iron-plated ships deploying basic shot.

Once that's done, it's generally just whatever I feel like, usually propping up the economy.

Speaking of French tanks...

I reloaded the game the other day, and have been amusing myself with the Japanese line. But I glanced at the French line-up (when I last did any serious playing, they were only *talking* about the upcoming introduction of the French...), and...

Where's the Somua S35? In the late '30s, it was believed to be the best medium tank in existence, and the French built a number of them (enough to equip the three DLMs). In other words, it's an iconic tank that reached mass production. But it's not in the game. WTH?

The R35 isn't present either, iirc. But it was very similar to the H35, which is probably the reason why it was skipped.

Only the Germans currently get the Somua, as a Tier 3 Premium medium tank. Given that the British only just received the Challenger, Firefly, Sherman, Stuart, Grant, Achilles, and Archer (or, essentially, most of what they actually used in WW2), I'd say that the French might have a bit of a wait on their hands; Wargaming seem more interested in paper-panzers than real ones.

I'm doing much better in 'shogun 2: fall of the samurai' now that a few enemies have been wiped out. It was also hilarious causing unending trouble using agents like no tomorrow sabotaging armies/distracting them and throwing out a bunch of rebellions as well as forcing the enemy provinces to go to my allegiance and cause a ton of unrest just with the presence of some heroes. It's pretty funny really but it's also tiring. I'm kind of seeing why i'd rather not play this game sometimes.

Oh and i didn't much like gatling guns either. I will have to say though that using agents a lot more has helped tremendously. Normally i use them to help with order but now causing disorder in the opponent by using them aggressively is even more hilarious.

I bough Agarest: Generations of War a while back and played it a little. Kind of got put off by the combat but I've decided to play it some more. Pretty neat game really. It's a JRPG but I like anime on occasion so nothing there to stop me, the voice acting seems good enough and you can flip through the dialog pretty quickly if bored.

Mostly your standard move around on a map and get into 'strategy' or 'tactical' battles that involve moving your dudes on a grid and then often pointing them in silly directions to overlap their 'extended area' patterns. If you have everyone connected, they can all act and join forces to pull of stronger moves, and at the same initiative step as your fastest character. You get bonus rewards for overkilling enemies so silly chains of attacks are encouraged.

You can (and have to?) combine items to make new ones, with a prereq 'tax' of having to buy/find a recipe style book to unlock a batch of patterns. Usually you can get everything from monsters and overkills, or from using the upgrade system to fully upgrade an item. Upgraded items are better, but then you can also convert them into something else, usually a material for smithing, but sometimes an item to stuff into one of your expansion slots you get from gear.

There's also an adventurer's guild (all town stuff is basically just menus with attractive screens and minimal additional dialog btw, which is good since you do a lot of back and forth..) which lets you claim titles (built-in achievements basically) that come along with money and other resources. I actually like trying to complete the achievements in A:GoW since you get useful goods. The adventure guild is also where you can collect items to trade in for extra skills to slot in for your characters.

The monster guild lets you take advantage of any captured monsters, you can either trade them in (usually for monster related items) or combine them in a bid to make a more powerful monster. I was able to combine monsters together and obtain a lv26 pixy when my party was closer to level 12. I guess monsters stick around between generations too.

I think there's some kind of dating-sim like aspect where you have to successfully woo one of three female characters by the end of the generation, and whichever character the MC convinces to marry him modifies the stats of the MC for your next generation. So far there hasn't been a lot of extra dialog or much of anything beyond the three characters occasionally reacting to a military decision the MC has made. Perhaps it gets more in depth later.

Anyway soz mini review, so far it seems like a pretty neat game for the price and like something I could play for many many hours if I wanted to do it all.
