I'm trying to make an Equestrian Horse (Pony?) and Musket army. Since I'm very interested in the Victorian Era, I wanted to base them on Wargames Factory's British Firing Line but with Perry Austrian heads. However, now that I think about it, Martini-Henry and Chassepot Rifles would really stifle cavalry (after all, this is Equestria we're talking about). Should I make it ACW-era or Napoleonic?

I wanted to do a humanized army inspired by Equestria. For example, the Solar Empire has Line Infantry inspired by the Austrian line infantry, while Celestia's Royal Guard have French Carabinier helmets with blue crests. Meanwhile, the New Lunar Republic is more of a ragtag rebel army that transforms into a dangerously professional army if victorious.
The problem is background. A lot of this boils down to the storyline. As much as I love the concept of Shining Armour rallying his troops to stop Napoleon from conquering Equestria, it's kind of in a void: Napoleonic!Equestria would just be another major power in Europe to be taken over by Boney. I already made up a whole storyline for humanized Equestria, the Crystal Empire, Saddle Arabia, etc. representing a time period from about 1860-1920.

Oh... ah yes there is that. I'm working on my own army this of a united Equestria Imagi-nation idea set in the early 18th century, after the 30 years war but well enough before hand that Europe was more or less united through the century and afterwards. Celestia would have the heavier, traditional and line troops while the more advance (arty, skirms and militia) would be more aliened with her.
In all seriousness I wish you luck in your endeavor. Might I suggest a couple of ideas though?
You can decide to throw in some magic if you want and say that Equestria replace a certain area of the world at one point with its ponies becoming humans (looking at you Equestria Girls). Or have it replace England as well, like the the sisters being long lost princesses of the Tudor line who are put in charge of England?
The second idea you may want to look into was the year of Rebellions 1848. It was when Europe was a washed in rebellions from Spain to Poland though few eve panned out. It would be at this point that a certain city state in the Germanys or possibly a break away portion of Greece (all the mythological creatures running around in MLP make sense with this location) or Serbia which was part of the Ottomen Empire at the time could experience that same rebellion with the New Lunar Republic. It would fit into the American Civil War (well many of the same tech in the early stages of the war were available at the same time) and if set in Greece then Napoleon wouldn't of gotten to it, but close enough to Austria Hungry.
I hope these ideas will help you if you decide on a historical army. They may not be the best but I felt like I needed to share them anyway

Anvildude wrote: Well, remember that there was a Cavalry charge during WWI. The LAST Cavalry charge, since they were all slaughtered by machineguns, but still...
And are you doing a pure pony(horse) army, or are you having riders as well?
The last cavalry charge in world military history is a matter of some debate. The American 10th Mountain Division's Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop was the last formal American horse equipped unit, and Third Platoon conducted a pistol charge against a German machinegun nest in 1945 while engaged in Austria, it was successful by all reports. The last horse cavalry charge by an Army cavalry unit took place against Japanese forces during the fighting in the Bataan Peninsula, Philippines, in the village of Morong on 16 January 1942, by the 26th Cavalry Regiment of the Philippine Scouts. Shortly thereafter, the besieged combined United States-Philippine forces were forced to slaughter their horses for food and the 26th Regiment fought on foot or in whatever scarce vehicles were available until their surrender.
The 26th's charge was also reportedly successful.
For more modern cavalry actions, American Special Forces and Northern Alliance allies in Afghanistan have ridden in at least one (October 2001) but probably more cavalry charges against Taliban positions fortified with machineguns, RPGs, and T-54 tanks. (Remember this was early in the war, Johnny still had some armor left because the Airforce, Navy and Marines hadn't cratered everything vaguely tank shaped in the entire country just yet.). These charges were fortified with air strikes and artillery which also probably marks the first time an air strike's been called in from horse back.
This doesn't mean the military horse is gone, far from it, between special forces and regular infantry units taking horses and mules for support or mobility in the mountains of Afghanistan and northern Iraq the American horse soldier (or horse Marine as it happens) lives on.
In the time since WW2 (and I've mentioned her before so forgive me) the Marines have even had a hero horse. SSgt Reckless who recently received a monument at the Marine Corps Museum in Virginia. Here she is in dress uniform being promoted to Staff Sergeant by the Commandant of the Marine Corps himself right before a 1,700 Marine military parade in her honor, her blanket includes the French Fourragère unique to the 4th and 5th Marines, two Purple Hearts, a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation with bronze star, the National Defense Service Medal, a Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Korea Medal, a Navy Unit Commendation, and a Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation
The horse soldier will never die.
I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn
Lemme at least leave a good hoof beat they'll remember loud and long
Well go figure. I was thinking of , I think, a Polish cavalry unit. But actually, it makes sense that cavalry could be used in the sort of high mobility non-trench warfare of the wars after WWI.
Though I'm kinda waiting for the Big Dog family of robots to be equipped for riding and armed. Robo horse, anyone?

The only one I knew for sure about was October 2001 as I mentioned, I'd bet you there's been several after the one in 2002 that haven't been declassified yet.
Anvil you're thinking of the Charge at Krojanty where Polish Uhlans. 1st and 2nd squadrons of the 18th Pomeranian Uhlans, at that time still not fully converted over to armored vehicles (TK-3 Tankettes, which 3rd and 4th squadrons were equipped with at the time of the charge) instead of their horses, charged and shattered a German infantry battalion outside the town of Krojanty, 1 September 1939. Soon after the attack the cavalry received machine gun fire from German armoured cars stationed nearby and was forced to retreat. Delay of the German advance is claimed as successful completion of the Poles' mission. This is where we get the myth of Polish horse cavalry charging German tanks.

A Town Called Malus wrote: So (now that I've finally got around to watching all of it) what were peoples thoughts on the most recent season?
Mixed. It's been a rollercoaster all around. Tons of good episodes, a couple of great episodes, and quite a few sub par-bad episodes. Their overrunning narrative really didn't do so well. Twilight's character is underdeveloped now rarely really showing her learning or doing things wrong which comes to be a problem when she also has magic that can solve problems (particularly when action oriented). Her rise to princess-hood is disappointing to say the least. Not because she became an alicorn, I'm fine with that, but instead because they don't really use it. The only times they have were in the opener, Twilight Time, and the most recent episode (Trade ya). First half of the season really needed to think about how a lot of suggestive themes might not be the best idea. Pinkie Pie is very annoying when not the main character, Spike is used to be beaten up for people to laugh at and is constantly mocked at with few good scenes even in his own episode, Fluttershy is still the doormat that never really develops, and they are bloody making EQ2 because one film based on a pony show but changed into not being pony but high school not musical but the new one will probably be a musical. Overall, personally think it is better than season 3 and there hasn't been an episode yet that is as bad as Spike at your Service. I'm overall having fun!
It seems to be getting quieter in this thread these days. Something I wanted to point out about the last episode: it features a book that can make the user's desires come true, the person with the book wants to change the world, and their eyes glow when they use it.

I think some of the "Mane-ia" is wearing off. The fandom's still going strong, and the show's still really, really good, but as it's become a more firmly entrenched part of internet and geek culture (albeit still somewhat behind the scenes/underground), people don't find as much need to talk about it with others- there's no massive Transformers off-topic thread on here, after all, but tons of people still nerd-out about that show a ton.
I'd say if you want more solid Pony culture, hang out on one of the dedicated sites for a bit.
Also the YouTube wipe probably hasn't helped things. A lot of folks dislike using other sites, and many can't (or won't ) watch it on the telly.

Spoiler:
It happens. People get busy, colleges get to finals, people have to work and, whilst it's still big, many of us are likely off of being in the new stage of the fandom where things are new. Add to that we are on a single thread dedicated to it on a wargaming oriented board with a very specific focus and it's bound to die off quicker than anything else. Also I was too busy thinking about the necromicon to really even compare it to death note
