I watched the first few episodes of Brave 10, but I couldn't keep interested in it. Picked up Persona 4 The Animation right after and the art work is great.

Recently watched the first 2 movies of Rebuild of Evangelion. It seems more optimistic then the original, but I realized that it's a pretty terrifying movie because:

Spoiler:
It seems to be a direct sequel to End of Evangelion as opposed to simply a re imagining, and Shinji is having to relive the events over and over again in some kind of cycle.

My Armies:

Agree that Rebuild seems more optimistic than the original series. It's still kind of depressing at times though. Still. Shinji is way less whiny.

On whiny characters, I just started watching the new series that had it's first episode come out this week, Red Data Girl. That chick is so dam whiny that i swear if the next episode is anywhere near as depressing to watch (not like Eva, like, wtf an i doing watching this), I'm leaving it alone.

It is definitely possible to be more whiny. Somebody somewhere my have a thing for it.... somewhere or these characters might actually have a purpose. Naruto is such a flawless being. How the hell could he stand that guy. Leave the poor bastard to his tears and angst.

Just watched Mirai Nikki - Future Diary in two days because the music seemed cool at first. Turns out it was great on the musical side, but towards the end the storyline was INCREDIBLE.

Also, of course I have been following JoJo's Bizzarre Adventure.

I'd like to point out that I am not a big fan of anime in general, so I really do demand a lot before I start watching anything.

Really? That's...actually pretty awesome. One of my pet peeves about EoE is that they left too much of it open at the end.

Appleseed is freaking metal, especially if you like Ghost in the Shell.

I'm spinning a couple plates right now, just finished Infinite Stratos, and I'm working my way through Ghost in the Shell season 1, Heaven's Memo Pad (which is pretty good, little odd and there's some Japanese culture quirks you need to be aware of, like NEETs but it's good!) and Black Cat, which is giving me happy memories of classic anime like Trigun and Outlaw Star. Also have Asura Cryin and Stardriver to work through at some point, then of course there's a new Maoyu and Girls und Panzer next week!

Wow I sound like a super fan... but really I'm just brain binging now that my midterms and big research paper are done.

Any series that can balance comedy and killer action sequences properly is looking at an avid watcher from me.

So I maranthoned a Asura Cryin' last night, it definitely wasn't Junk food like Infinite Stratos, lots of srs business pain and a seriously demented bad guy who's only making a bad situation worse. It won't be for everyone but great action and some fantastic character development. I strongly recommend it!

Warning: This anime may generate "feels" in the user.

So I'm interested in some Mecha Anime. Any tips on where to start and perhaps what to avoid?

Well I suppose it all depends on you more or less. Do you want serious business mecha anime? All combat all the time with lots of drama? More hot blooded OTT stuff? Romance/comedy? I mean that's the fun part about anime in general in my opinion, there's plenty of stuff specifically tailored to you.

Some recommendations with notes:

Asura Cryin: Drama/Romance Mecha Combat, usually keeps a straight face but gets a few laughs in. High Feels potential, I think it's on crunchy roll

Macross Frontier - Latest of the Macross series lots of good music, great action and a decent mix of more serious drama and romance with some light hearted comedy/slice of life

VanDread - Pretty good good combat, but this mecha anime hangs out on the wacky side of town, lots of gender jokes (it's a universe where men and women are at war with each other) but a decent comedy none the less

Infinite Stratos: Mixing harem comedy with mecha combat and doing it right, protagonist is notable for having a spine, a rarity for the sub genre.

Mobile Suit Gundam 8th MS Team: How Gundam goes hardcore, combine Top Gun (or Area 88 if you're familiar) with Mecha and you get this serious and surprisingly realistic (in universe) take on gundam.

G Gundam - The exact opposite of the above this is Gundam to it's full hot blooded potential. Not a bad plot and some pretty awesome fight scenes, if relying a bit too much on awesome finishing moves ala well... Hot Blooded Fighter anime.

Gurren Lagan - The key with this example of the hot blooded mecha anime is figuring out for yourself how deep the level of parody goes. Still manages to be pretty good if you can get past some of the more ridiculous elements.

Full Metal Panic (and attendant sequels):: Fairly hardcore mecha combat meets high school comedy anime, and it /works/ thanks to enjoyable characters and some fantastic fight scenes in and out of the well designed mechs.

Code Geass: Another member of the big boy's club for mecha combat anime this fairly serious example of the genre is actually pretty awesome. Pay attention though, some of the politics and games being played in here move quick.

Area 88: I mentioned this earlier, it's not really a mecha anime, but a jet fighter anime. Still really good, if pretty freaking brutal. There is one character in here you will want to beat to a pulp if you hate double crossing snakes.

There are a couple feel breaker (like a combo breaker, but feels ) moments in Code Geass, the end is extremely well done though.

On a touchy feely note I tried to watch Revolutionary Girl Utena because enough people squawked at me that it's a classic. Blegh... I can't believe it got away with 2/3 of the episodes being stock footage like that. Utena herself is an interesting female lead but the characters around her just strike me as weak retreads of well established tropes. Interesting ideas, fails to deliver. Or the message is going over mu head because it's hiding behind all the stock footage.

I often feel code geass could be done just as well without mechs, just normal military fighting. The mechs start to suffer from the inevitable "OOTness" toward the end of the second series, with giant lasers and being painted bright red and yellow ect.
The thing that really interested me about that series was the alternate history setting, the mechs I feel is just to make the action a bit more interesting and stylised.

My friend didn't cry when he watched ano hana. I don't believe him. I cried when I saw that but I didn't cry when I watched code geass. I did get the feels at the end though. Man just thinking about feels makes me get the feels.

Sounds like you need to read knighmare of nunnaly or something. That has less mechs I think? The spin off set in the past has no mechs for obvious reasons. I believe the susaku of the counterattack manga has no mechs too, but it was never finnished as far as i know.

Finished Gungrave and it was pretty awesome. The ending disappointed me quite a bit though, a bit of a letdown when compared to how good the rest of the series was. On to Gun X Sword!

An those were some pretty accurate descriptions of some mecha anime, 08th MS team is really well done. The only other mecha anime I would recommend besides more Gundam series would be Break Blade. Kinda funky and unique style, definitely not for everyone. I enjoyed though, so I'm a little biased.

Almost done with Civilization blaster, last episode should be up this weekend. Loved it so far, 4 episodes go.

Probably gonna start watching Guilty Crown or Eureka Seven after that. (read that as, marathon both this weekend.)

Good Mecha you say? Go watch Code Geass and Full Metal Panic before I slap you. Also, add Macross to that.

And honestly, Gungrave was awesome untill the funky gak started happening.

Ledabot, if you want to get the feels from a series, go watch Saikano, have fun sobbing.

It's only 12 episodes so it's a good inbetweener. Except possible emotional scarring.

Also, anyone else excited for the Shingeku no Kyojin anime that should be starting next month? The trailer looked absolutely ace.

(if you haven't read the manga, be warned, this thing is full of gore)

Been loving Blast of Tempest: The Civilization Blaster so much! Today is a great day for me for anime. New Girls Und Panzer, new Blast of Tempest, Love Live! and ...I'm spacing one other anime.

Finished watching Girls Und Panzer. Fantastic ending, very happy, made me want to cheer.

Question is, what will we get as a season 2 plot? My guess is, with the expected popularity of Oorai, we'll get some new girl who becomes a rival for Miho as leader of the group. Internal conflict, maybe some replacements of leaders in the other schools (they lost, after all), really mix things up.

I'd also like to find out more about the world. Why are these schools on insanely massive aircraft carriers (so large that you can lose a frickin' Tiger P in them)? What's up with all the dilapidated, uncared for buildings that they fight around?
