I didn't like the mechanics of their mechs. Ok, it's magical tech that relies on ligaments of flexible quartz to move. I can accept that. But then why are they making all the armor and bullets out of quartz as well? That stuff is super brittle. Slap some steel armor on those things!

Overall the series wasn't Bad, but it didn't really rise above mediocre to me.

I could argue that this is hugely misrepresentative of Shinji, point out the other asorted crap he's been through, the fact that he is a realistic depitction of what that kind of trauma would do to a young boy and that he isn't just a generic badass, and aw your head off for daring to insult my darling Hasubando...but that is completely hilarious.

I'll let you live....this time.

Well, now, granted, I only ever saw the original series and part of the remake movies, but...

No, he's way over the top. I've met kids and adults who were much more traumatized than Shinji is at the start, and he still acts like this long before he does anything serious or anything happens to him that would leave him the basket case he is.

Given that a great deal of the things that happen to him are firmly in the realm of science fiction, I don't think we can really draw a paralell between him and real people.

But seriously, are you telling me that if your mother vapourized in front of you when you were 3 years old, you were then completely abandoned by your bastard father, and then 11 years later called by him, not for him to apologize for being a dick to you, but to force you to risk your life against a seemingly invincible monster that is protected by a shield of pure fear (which you know nothing about other than "Holy S%$T, that thing is the size of a skyscraper, and it survived an atomic bomb being dropped on its head! ") in a robot which, once again, you know nothing about, and then when you refuse, guilt trips you into doing so by threatening to send a critically ill girl in your place...that you wouldn't be a tad upset about all that?

And that's just the START of his troubles. Also, we don'tt know about what happened to him in the intervening 11 years.

Not everyone is a Kamina. Trash talking an emotionally damaged young boy is kinda low, even by my standards...wait a minute...

Did you watch the dub? If so, that would explain it. Spike Spencer, as much as I like him and think he's a good voice actor, did an atrocious job of voicing Shinji, especially at the beginning of the series.

You haven't watched Evangelion until you've watched it with the Japanese voicetrack.

I can think of maybe 5 occasions where he actually cries. And bearing in mind that the most prominent example was because he knew that he was never going to see Misato, the closest thing he'd had to a mother for 11 years, again...

Heck, that scene made ME cry.

Well, let me put it this way: I've met people, including kids, who were a hell of a lot worse off, and not nearly as bad. Granted we don't know much about the intervening time frame for Shinji, so he might have been, oh, say, kept chained in a basement and tortured for the entire time, or badly beaten so that he suffered brain damage (seriously, of all the mentally messed up people I met at HGA the closest to Shinji's behavior was the guy who had his skull smashed in with a metal bar. He was fully cognizant, but he was emotionally all over the place due to the nature of the damage) but this isn't explained. Asuka gets a more believable explanation of her behavior than Shinji does.

Same director, same commitment to pointless fan service, same hatred of clothing for one's lower body etc. It's more or less a poke at the director and not a detailed comparison

Also Shinji is the universe's angstiest human being leading some theorists to believe he is in fact an avatar of the Elder God of Angst, Angsthulu.

Well, congratulations, you know some strong-willed people. Just because you know people who have taken worse and came out not as bad as you'd think doesn't mean everyone does.

Case in point, I have a relative who jumped off a pier and broke his neck. They thought he was going to be dead on arrival. In around a year, he was playing football again. So, by your logic, we should accuse people who break their necks and don't fully recover wimps or weaklings.

So, yeah. There are people, including children, who have suffered trauma and remained relatively well balanced. More power to them. and I wish them well. Shinji isn't so lucky (mainly, it should be noted, because if he just shrugged off his hardships and carried on as usual, the story wouldn't work and would be very, very dull) and has taken his trauma a lot worse. I don't see the point in hating on someone just because they fail to recover from a horrible experience.

Also, we don't know the full story about Shinji. All we know about him is what has been presented in the show. For example, I have a theory that Shinji actually suffers from autism (like myself, incidentally) which would explain his social ineptness and introvertedness. He's a fictional character, so we can't access his medical records, his personal history, or anything beyond what appears in the show.

On another point, sure Shinji is angsty and meek, but that's all he is. He's still a decent human being, just one with issues. Compared to Gendo, perhaps the ultimate heartless bastard, and Asuka, who does deserve some slack considering her own traumatic past, but is still incredibly malicious and downright abusive to Shinji and others, constantly insulting, shouting at, and at times inflicting violence upon her "friends", he's practically a role model. The only outright nasty thing he ever did was...that scene from End of Evangelion-and that isn't even necessarily canonical.

But then I suppose I would be biased towards Shinji, considering I am myself a socially incompetent teenager (also I watched the show when I was 15). I've always been able to relate to Shinji, but maybe that's just me.

Who said they ever came out of it. at no point did I say they were not all sorts of fethed up, but Shinji's response to it is just off to me.

 Squigsquasher wrote:

Again, my point is that he does not, based on my own experiences, act like any persona who has suffered severe trauma other than the blunt physical kind, that I have ever encountered. After his first few battles, his chronic anxiety and depression make sense (PTSD) but his behavio before that makes very little, but please note that we're examining this through the lens of western behavior patterns.

Asuka tends to impose her own self standards on others. The abuse she shouts at them is the same sort of self abuse she puts herself through when she fails. If you think she's rude to others, imagine what's going on inside.

Anyway, one of Shinji's traits is that he's hopelessly incompetent when it comes to his own sexuality. Has something to do with Freud and his mother or something.

Samurai 7 is hilarious about that, each time we were shown the peasant village the Samurai were to save we had to remark on just how powerfully ugly everyone in the village was.

Another new one that could be interesting.

Official Title - Danganronpa The Animation
Alternative Titles - Danganronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei - The Animation
Description - A group of 15 elite high school students are gathered at a very special, high class high school. To graduate from this high school essentially means you’ll succeed in life, but graduating is very difficult. The school is presided over by a bear called Monokuma, and he explains to them that their graduation hinges around committing a murder. The only way to graduate is to kill one of your classmates and get away with it. If the other classmates discover the identity of the killer, the killer is the only one executed. However, if they fail to catch the killer, only the killer graduates and the others are annihilated. Which of the 15 will survive the bloodbath to come?

Sounds super dark, then the opening sequence is freaky trippy. A lot of the character designs are quite weird and has a lot of stereotypes from school animes. Definitely an odd one, and again, I think it has some potential. Gonna watch this one and see how it develops.

I guess the main character is the Super boring guy out of all the standard characters tropes. Sadly, since he is the main, he will almost definably be the one that does make it out, even if he is boring as hell.

That's probably true. I'd much rather see either Aoi, Togami, or Fukawa make it out though.
