looking great and i like the idea of removing the handle to fit it diffrently on the gun but one last thing i dont know why but i think the gun would fit with the futureristic feel if you added 2 of them glass bubbles on the side like the bioshock 2 shotgun

like behinde the shell exit on the gun but thats just me but other then that cant wait for it to be ready for modeling

i am just the wrong wargamer in the wrong place at the wrong time as allways so blame creed

15000 gak (its not point value its how many models i have lying around in bitz )

On the glass bubbles, I think that would look great for an energy weapon, but I don't see it for a ballistic weapon. And I think if you really like them, I can make some out of clear resin that you can add to yours if you really want them. But I don't think I will add them to the blender image, just something I will make by hand.

I am glad you like it! I have to wait on getting it printed until I know what my next address will be. But it should be getting printed in a week or so.

well the tought behinde it was that i find a normal engine like that a bit boaring so why not spiff it up with somthing redicules for a power sourch but sure i would like that if possible since i am after all the mad steampunker (mostly on steam tough )

Gotcha. And I guess it would need a power source seeing as it has to rotate....

And with that in mind, I added two small-ish "ports" for the power bulbs to be attached to in my final rendition. I am not going to post new pics as it's not much of a change.

I also am going to make the "bulbs" in blender and just have them printed out with the rest of it, but I will make a separate mold for them and cast them in clear resin.

I'm sure motors of any sort could be printed out that look real, but how much detail would come out at this scale?

Anyway, I'm happy with how the gatling gun looks. I can't wait to see it in real life!

How the hell can you make a magnetic wire coil motor with a 3d printer?

There are actually in testing printers for alloys and other components together that could make things like circuit boards and resistors and such. Very small low voltage switches for use in micro-components and such. Very experimental.

I can believe solid state components..almost, but a wrapped wire coil for an electric motor? That's unpossible.

Not really when you consider that the molecules can be assembled almost at the molecular level. with a little bastardization and creativity it isn't hard to see how some one could use a program not unlike Jakes Blender to design a 3d model that incorporates differrent materials in a way that the wire could actually be wound around a spool by the printer. I think that the drawback would be the print time and the fact that a device printed this way would almost have to be a one of a kind very special purpose device or otherwise it simply isn't economically feasible to print it. Much like you wouldn't necessarily want to pay for a portable cd player that was printed from one of these things.

We already have single use cellphones that you can get printed out from a vending machine.

I think that the logical next step in printable devices would not be in the area of mechanical but in the area of surgical. 3D texturized bitmapping of a MRI'd internal organ could than be used to (molecularly?) print a graft of a certain type of tissue or material in order to do microscopically precise repairs or replacements......

Yeah, but the process of manufacturing they use wrapping the wire into a coil in a motor causes the magnetization, which makes the motor work when a current is applied. They would have to use an expensive alloy methinks, and that just wouldn't be cost-effective when regular ferrous metal is already relatively cheap. I dunno, perhaps in the near future? Maybe we won't need centralized manufacturing if everyone can manufacture anything they need at home...

The only thing you need for a motor are some metal brushes (printable), some bearings (printable), a shaft that can turn (printable) and some coils. All a coil is is a copper path that circles around a central point, allowing electrons to flow along it. The molecules don't need to be lined up in the wire form, as long as you have non-conductive space between each printed 'wire' section, the electricity would flow the same. It's also possible to print metals.

um fun fact i work at a electronic production facility named TOPRO amd its true about how small we can make the items and cards hell some cards are infact as smaller then my models and they are used to operate queit alot also to answere the question there are infact light bulbs as small as that hell smaller that you can even see the bulb but its there

I got the Heresy Investigator's Hammer in the mail today. I am not pleased with the level of detail on the printed piece. I will have to add some detail on my own, but the size is good at least!

That's cool, if the print doesn't come out right, at least you can sculpt detail before molding.

Hey guys! I am not dead. Been working a lot. I think I am done with the Female Heresy Investigator for Sageheart! Well, as long as Sageheart is happy with it of course. I just need to take some pictures. there is a little clean-up left to do, but it's looking good.

I have started the My LIttle Commissar again a couple of times, but I haven't been happy with it. So I am still working on that.

The 3D prints I had made are waiting for me back home in Montana, so I don't know what those look like, but the ones I have ordered so far were all the "polished" versions, and as I saw with the hammer, it removed a lot of the details. So I think I will have to re-order them anyways.

There is another company that can print them with much better detail, but at around 10 times the cost. And I just don't have the $$$ to devote to that right now. But as with the shotguns I did, Shapeways does have good detail, and looks pretty good at that scale. And I don't know if the difference in print quality will show at that scale. We'll see I guess.

Anyways, off to work. Later!

El Vik - I know, I know. I have really been slacking on the hobby side of things. But on the bright side. I got my first check yesterday, and my wife was happy with it! I'm not saying it makes up for me leaving her with a 3-1/2 year old and a 11 month old at home, but at least she's not disappointed.

I also didn't mean to ignore your earlier post about local gaming places...it's just that I haven't visited any of them yet. There are none where I am staying, but I am currently in a small fishing village about 1 hour north of where I will be living in a month or so and we have been commuting every day. I will get around to the gaming stores. In fact I have a bit of extra cash that is burning a hole in my pocket! And I should put it to something constructive instead of spending it on Beer.

LDD - I don't know if Maxmini would be cheaper or not. I looked on the website, and couldn't find a link to printing. Is it something they offer the general public? Also, even if they were cheaper the shipping costs would probalbly put it over the top. But who knows.

I did make a new order from shapeways. It should be here some time after I get back from going home for my youngest daughter's first birthday! So, yay! 2 great events in one week!

It looks like I will have Monday off, so I will try to get some pictures. If it isn't overcast or something like that. It happens a lot here. Part of why I moved. I like the damp climate.

Until later,
RSJake
