It says 10 cubic feet. 2 foot wide and deep and 2 foot six inches tall. Titan scratch builds have been built bigger and sold at similar prices. He should show photos of previous work if he was capable of such a standard of work though.

I was watching that one and almost bid on it. (to be honest, I had every intention of doing so, but literally forgot to bid....ah well!) That is actually the kind of auction I try to win: an awful little kid paint job that can be stripped or painted over. look how low the final sellng price was.

That's how you find the really good deals on Ebay.

So long as it wasn't actually painted with nail polish. I could see doing that with metal models but I would be wary of doing it with plastic just because the options for stripping them become far fewer.

Actually it would be even easier to strip if it WERE nail polish. Just buy a bottle of acetone nail polish remover and daub it off with cotton balls. That stuff works for a lot of paints as well. That's how I remove the red paint from the tips of my airsoft guns for example...

Stripping plastic is a littler harder to do than metal miniatures, but it's really not that bad. A bath in "Simple Green" cleaninng solution will usually do the trick.

I was under the impression that acetone would have started to melt the plastic, can't say I've ever tried it though so I could be wrong.

If you dab it on a SMALL amount at a time and give the plastic time to 'dry' after each little use, you can be fine. If you let it soak, you'll come back to a blob of plastic... with all the paint stripped off.

I believe he was referring to metal models, though.

Well the model in question was a Land Raider, unless a generalization was made that I missed. My general rule is if I spend more than an hour of work for each $10 saved that means I'm working for less than minimum wage.

Yeah. I saw that. I'd have left well enough alone, had it not been for the fact that, later in the same post, he also mentioned that plastic was harder than metal and recommended a Simple Green bath.

It looked to me like he went from "Nail polish on plastic" to "general paint removal" to "cleaning plastic" in his response, rather than just responding to "cleaning plastic."

I hope that clarifies my thought process.

in my experience dot 3 brake fluid works wonders on GW plastics, I have had models soak in it for days without deforming (paint came off wonderfully!). DON'T drop a resin model in it; I tested with some leftover bits, they got both soft and brittle (figure that!) and sort of swollen; it completely ruins a model beyond all repair.
GW HIPS plastic and any kind of metal, though, are just fine. dunno about restic materials - will test sometime soon. My previous can of brake fluid got so bad I had to turn it in for recycling - but not after putting many, many loads of models through it. it really is pretty damn nice stuff.
just wear gloves while cleaning your models and make sure to not spill the stuff - it NEVER evaporates (that's kind of the point of brake fluid ), it's oily enough to make everything sticky and it's generally a bitch to clean off of a floor with any kind of texture.
models are simply a case of cleaning with running water, then using a clean toothbrush (not the one you just rubbed the paint remnants off with ) to clean them in soapy water, then rinsing them again.
at that point, although in my experience some plastic-glued bits come of rather easy and lots of CA joints just plain break and you might therefore have to reglue stuff here and there, they are generally ready to take a fresh coat of primer.

No, I was refering to plastics as well with the nail polish remover comment. You have it exactly right. You have to dab it on a little at a time to avoid it melting the plastic. But it does work quite well, and much quicker than a "Simple Green" bath. I could probably strip that Land Raider in about an hour.

For metal figures, I use a harsh chemical arosol paint stripper. It's some nasty stuff and you have to be careful using it. But it goes through paint like Cooky Monster eats cookies!

Okay. Here's another one for your viewing pleasure.

Basically, this guy wants $230.00 US for a SM Thunderfire cannon. Painted, yes, but still just a two-model set. You'd think for that price he'd at least have used decals.

Acetone FREE nail polish remover costs like 1€ per bottle of 200ml and removes everything from plastic miniatures without damaging the plastic itself. You can usually find it right next to the acetone nail polish remover in any drugstore ^^

Honestly, that's a damn good paint job, on a currently $50+ dollar model. I see it as a little high for somebody who likes buying painted minis...but not too bad. I certainly don't see that one as a folly.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

That thing just takes a hell of a lot more hours to build+paint than you'd think, I'm told so no, it's not entirely unreasonable (though certainly 'centerpiece model' pricing, and who in his right mind uses a TFC as a 'centerpiece'?)

I found this auction, for an Assault on Black Reach box that has had the marines removed but the Orks remain.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/350648951890?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I thought $9.99 was very cheap, so I sent the auctioner an email asking about the Orks. As it turns out, half the Orks are missing and they've hidden that fact beneath the empty SM sprues.

Due to cultural differences, I initially read £49 as the price you posted here. Thought it was very reasonable!

I have to say, I am doubtful as the veracity of these first eds.

Dunno. I am not an expert in these things. Assuming they are the real thing, would they be worth this kinda crazy money?

I've seen similar sell for more. People will pay obscene amounts for rare books. All in all, though, I think they're on the high side, and I don't think any serious rare book dealer would buy them for such a price, let alone through eBay.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
In fact, here's an example of an expensive first ed., a copy of Virginia Woolf's To The Lighthouse

http://rarebooks.blackwell.co.uk/rarebooks/book.php?id=45574

Going for £6,850, in good condition. A first ed Hobbit with dust jacket would proooobably be worth about three times that, as it's so popular, but having given it further thought I don't think that the prices asked there are even close to reasonable.

Don't take that as gospel though, I only know about the rare book trade through osmosis, having worked with rare book dealers for quite a while, I've never actually been one.
