Dunno if any of you caught the Townhall last night with Russ but apparently he actually had answers to a lot of questions (nothing satisfying about flamers and machineguns though, so...keep whining about them ).

Looks like the next mech release will be the Kodiak, which is pretty nifty given that they're looking to make it akin to a IIc variant rather than an omnimech (upgradeable engine being a big part of this), comes with a MASC too and some of the builds I thought about given it's hardpoints are pretty terrifying. Yay second clan 100 tonner!

Looks like over the next couple months they're going to be going knee-deep into CW even more than they are now - which sucks for this solo-dropper with no unit because...well, quickplay is the only fun I can have (I'm a filthy casual).

The Kodiak was never a Omnimech. Therefor it's like the IIC. LOREEEEEEEEE

Given the tonnage and clan-ness I wonder if it'll be more expensive than the past 4 Mechs. I Certainly hope not.

BUT....I WANT MY BUSHWHACKER!!!!one!!!11!!!!

There's at least one more classic mech coming. Then there's the Kodiak and a 4 mech clan pack (presumably Omnis).

My bets are on;

Turkina
Night Gyr
Black Lanner
Fire Falcon
Kodiak
Phoenix Hawk

As the next 6 mechs we're going to see. Unfortunately the Black Lanner will most certainly be a trash mech, and the Night Gyr will probably become OP as all hell over night XD

So! This game. I was following it in the beginning but then I heard there was a bunch of stuff about third-person view and awful overheating mechanics and generally being a mess so I let it slip off my radar. How is this game today?

What kind of size classes and game modes are favoured, what's the general flow of combat, how does advancement work etc etc?

It has a weird Launcher for its primary interface, matches almost always boil down to a full-team brawl somewhere on the too-small maps, and they still haven't implemented melee.

Those are the negatives (and honestly I'm not sure about the whole brawl aspect for people that are actually in organized groups) but it's a game where you can run around in big stompy mechs and pew-pew at other big stompy mechs.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

So. Negatives first.
No melee mechs or melee period. Not looking as if there will be any melee in the near future either.

CW mostly sucks. IS vs IS and Clan vs Clan can be fun. But playing as IS vs clan SUCKS. Clan mechs when put together like that are flat out more powerful than most IS mechs despite IS and Clan being mostly equal in quick matches.

Matches normally boil down to the 2 teams just fighting it our rather than going for the minimal objectives (Cap the base, cap points)

3rd person never amounted to much. You basically can't fight in it due to arm lock and other issues. It's pretty much there just so you can look at your paintjob ingame.

Overheating isn't a issue either? Not sure what you'd be complaining about there. Nothing much different from earlier Mechwarrior titles except that coolant is a consumable thingy you have to buy.with ingame money (It's no OP trust me.)

Now the positives

Every match boils down to a giant fight. YEAH WAAAAAGH!!! DAKKAWOLF!!! LASER KNIGHT!!! PEW PEW PEW!!! STOMPY STOMPY!!
Yeah. That's fun. When a good brawl gets going its AMAZINGLY fun. I love fighting in this game

The mechbuilding: Compared to MW4 this game has much more complicated and more intelligent mechlab stuff. Plenty of options for everything. Clean UI and easy to use.

The whole feeling of it: I feel much more like a huge stompy robot here than I ever did in MW4.

Lights and mediums still being useful: Again, in MW4 you'd phase out light and mediums and normally heavies too, when you started getting assault mechs. Here that's not true. Bigger mechs pack bigger guns yes, but lighter mechs are more mobile making it easier for them to peek out, PEW PEW and dodge back into cover. Most non assaults still can't take even a Zeus 1v1 in the open. But all mech classes are equally viable and valueble. Not mech left behind! (except for the Atlas going 43kph idiot)

Clan balance: So I said above that CW IS vs Clans sucks. And it does. But in quick play the balance is fine. Daishi's will destroy anything directly in front of them. But flank 'em and they die, Madcats are strong but clan lasers run too hot to be a super dangerous threat.
Clan weapons work differently from is with longer range and higher heat. Multiple projectiles on the ACs and such

Issues you were worried about?

All in all. I love this game. This is currently my favorite game. I will play it until I am the last person alive who does so I love this game so much

You want to try and get back into it, sign up, send a friend request to Ghazzy and run through some tutorial stuff

This isn't really true (anymore). IS mechs like the Battlemaster and Quickdraw have overpowering range advantages under the current quirks (MAH LORE!), and the Blackjack is as tanky as a heavy mech with all its structure quirks and a DPS speedster on top of that.. The nerf to Clan laser ranges did a great thing for overall balance, unfortunately certain IS mechs were not sufficiently dequirked to reflect that.

Fortunately those are supposed to be fixed next big balance past (this month I think). The balance is going to in a good place. Even right now its actually really good barring certain hyper quirked mechs and the nagging problem of the Artic Cheetah. They're even removing the Timber and Stormcrows negative quirks because they actually need them gone XD

I'd expand this to the more general statement that objective gameplay is non-existent in game. Mechs are at the same time, never quite slow/fast enough to make it matter and for a game with no respawns TTK is too low. Killing the enemy is simply the best way to win. Even in CW, most matches just boil down to killing the entire enemy team off.

I still think it would help if they had larger maps for longer game types- MWO is, when you come right down to it, a team Arena game, more than any sort of tactical squad shooter. If Community Warfare was more fleshed out, they could go some really neat places.

Another part of that is the immersion factor. Yes, when you're in a match it's fun and you can feel like you're really in a big stompy robot, but before and after, you're in a non-fullscreen Launcher-style window, doing Mechbuilding and stuff. I think if they put in a full game world they could do a lot- so when you start the game up it takes the whole screen, and you're in a Dropship Ready Room or cantina- then there's options to go to the Garage (what we got), a Shop (with a shopkeeper behind the counter being the one you deal with- maybe even a Black Market for certain deals, or certain parts only available with certain planets under your control), participate in an Arena fight (PUGs) or take on a Contract (Com Warfare).

It doesn't even need to be full 3d or roamable- a simple 2.5 D point-and-click like Starcraft 2 did, where everyone just stands around, would work.

Then have a map where you can actually see and interact with the current statuses of the different planets, Bounty Boards giving the leading Clans and Squads and factions, that sort of stuff. Just, things that tie each of the different combats together, instead of them all being "Garage-fight-garage-fight-garage-fight"

On the Heat thing- I think what people got het-up about was "Ghost Heat"- a mechanic that discourages laserboat alpha-strikes by giving heat 'bonuses' for firing too many similar weapons at once- like if you fire 3 LL at once, you don't just have the heat buildup of 3 LL, but that +30% more. Stuff like that- though smaller weapons (Small Lasers, SRMs, machine guns) don't have as many restrictions on that, allowing for things like Hunchback 9M's (the energy-boat one) sporting 9 SLs.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

Oh. Yeah Ghost heat is a thing. (It's also 4 Larges before Ghost heat hurts) I don't really mind it. It stops people from boating insane stuff.

There is a option to set the mechlab to fullscreen too.

The Hero is literally the Atlas-S, which is kind of uninspiring on the one hand but on the other it's an Atlas-S that can go 70 kph and mount MASC. That sold me in itself. It won't be uber tier but it will be fun

Of the other variants, the most interesting is the 3. Basically a Dakka Whale on a faster chassis. The 1 and 5 will immediately suffer from what I suspect will be big shield arms, and having most of their weapons mounted on big shield arms :( That's why I skipped the 2 Pack. The Kodiak 4 might have some interesting applications, but seems immediately inferior in any of them to the Bear Spirit and the 3. The 2 I think might make a serviceable ranged firing platform with those JJs, a bunch of LPLs and a Gauss rifle.

Hitboxes/scaling of course still be unknown for 4 months. Damn that release is far off. I suspect we'll be seeing CW Phase 3 drop in April.

So, I've decided to get back/more into MWO - now that I can actually afford to sink some dollars into it.

Now, because I'm totally awesome and MLG material (really not, what's ghost heat again?) any of you guys tend to run at later times during the day or early in the morning? I'm on the East Coast US and work 3rd shift - so yeah, in the morning after work or my days off while the family sleeps is generally my time.

Either way, hope to frag one of you soon.

I was actually furious at the Pheonix Hawk. I wanted the Bushwhacker so badly and he was talking about how badly people wanted things like the Bushwhacker and Thug. Then he throws THAT at us.

I'm disgusted. Anyways. I might get back into the game tomorrow. I've been absent for a few weeks playing other things.

Thread necro gooooo!

Got back into MWO recently to scratch the itch - currently working on getting dem c-bills for some clan tech.

Also, whoever at PGI thought Escort was a good idea needs to seriously rethink their design - as a defender, if you get a nice open map...you're screwed. An atlas is still, just an atlas at the end of the day - and with poor pathing and an AI that's dumber than doggak, it becomes remarkably frustrating to run the mode.

I'm not even kidding, had a match minutes ago where we had a straight line of nothing to the evac zone, VIP mech decides he wants to run the long way, across open ground right into the guns of the enemy team. Nothing we could do.

I dig Escort actually!

Just needs a few tweaks, like a different color icon on the mini-maps, a directional arrow of where it's heading, and it should attack as well. Not like a min/max build, but it should have some defense. Myself, as a Locust pilot would never dare square up with an Atlas. But with this one I can, to no detriment, other than the enemy. I think the defensive turrets should be tougher as well. Again, as a Locust pilot, I can clear them within a minute with minimal damage.

Also, the game will be called Marauder-IICWarrior: Online for the next few weeks, while people are skilling up their new rides.

Thanks for the thread necro, was debating doing the same or just creating a new thread on the same topic.

It was my pleasure

And you're right about the MAD IIC's they're everywhere - and it's nuts given how tanky they are, of course my atlas out-tanks them...but that's not really saying much, it out-tanks everything.

I got my "Ace of Spades" achievement/title a few days ago!

It was one of those matches where everything went right. It was in Frozen City with my Locust with 6 Small Pulse Lasers and I absolutely dominated. I met their slow movers in the city portion, right before the valley/destroyed bridge. You could tell that the Marauder pilots hadn't fully skilled up their new rides because it took them forever to adjust their torso's and facing, and by the time they could, I was already behind them and they were cored.

Was pretty proud of myself, despite my 8th kill being an AFK player.
