It certainly doesn't need a sequel. What BL needs is more IG work from Steve Lyons.

That reminds me, I still need to write/post a review of Hive of the Dead. Has anyone else played Herald of Oblivion or Beneath the City of the White Wolf? Which was a much better IG book than Cadian Blood.

And Lyons' third book, which include "Ice Guard" and "Death World"....both incredibly awful IG books.
That, mind you, is ignoring his audio book "Waiting Death".
But tastes differ. I didn't mind "Dead Men Walking", but I find the Death Korps rather boring and thought the pacing was a bit jumpy.

Well, worst of the Guard novels has got to be the Tallarn one by Soulban. He also wrote the worst Necromunda novel, somehow managing to turn it into a generic sci-fi setting.

My reviews of both:
Cadian Blood
Dead Men Walking
Cadian Blood was good, pulpy GrimPr0n. Dead Men Walking was at a different level.

Cadian Blood certainly read like pulp fiction, laying it on really, really thick. Dead Men Walking was less about the Korps and more about relation problems amidst of a Necron invasion.

Dead Men Walking managed to take the 40k universe seriously without leaving the brand rails. It's still a 40k novel but it is without a doubt the most serious piece of writing in their catalog.

I also found that 15 Hours was amazing. It depicts the generic grunt`s life in the imperial guard perfectly.
Cadian Blood was okay, but it's a bit generic, I thought. No really memorable characters. The ending was great though.

I had that feeling myself when reading Emperor's Mercy by Henry Zou, which started off with an donkey-cave protagonist, but had these glimmers of humanity nestled in there that I sorely missed in other novels.

I think 15 Hours managed to do this too.
Hell, maybe even Ice Guard. It wasn't the best IG story out there, but you can really see the terror of fighting the Tyranids illustrated in a way I haven't seen in any other novel featuring them.

But it was well written, gritty, and ADB's first full 40k book (I believe). Also, I'm a big fan of the Black Templars.
Really? I heard battle for the fang was good.
Battle of The Fang is indeed good.
Supposedly the Iron Hands and Legion of the Damned books are pretty good, but not as much so as Helsreach (it seems) and Battle of the Fang are...
Pretty sure AD-B had one 40K novel before Helsreach... Edit: Yep, Cadian Blood.
Battle for the Fang was good, especially as it came out at the same time as Prospero Burns. Good reads together.
The Iron Hands book is ok, but portrays them pretty well.
Legion of the Damned was great, if you didn't want to read about Legion of the Damned. Because that's not what it's about. That'd be like buying the 6th Ed BRB and it being WFB rules. Oh, wait....

I think aside from the financial implications it is going to kill some of the buzz on forums which spring up discussing the new releases. You will get some people having bought the hardback, everyone else saying 'dunno haven't read it yet', then 9 months later the first bunch of people saying 'that book is old news, and I've forgotten it'.
Personally I'm amazed the hardback/new release thing didn't happen a lot sooner. I'm sad the direct to softback has gone; yes it was a nice bonus but like any gift given freely it doesn't stop you from feeling miffed when it is taken away.

It just shows they're feeling more secure regarding sales.
'Real' publishers always like to put out a hardback first (if they think something is going to sell), going direct to softback is for new authors or books they're unsure of.
They'll expect to many 'fans' of an author to buy the hardback, and then later buy a paperback too
