The Sigillite turned up today from Amazon. I'm listening to it right now...

Not action packed but it's pretty DAMN essential for fluff lovers. And the production values just keep on improving and improving.

I listened to the sample and it confirmed for me why I don't like audio books - too slow an I bet it sounds better in my head when (if) I ever read the book.

An important series like the HH should be available in the same consistent format, ie the one it started in, so that we can all keep up with it at the same time.

"Bloody typical, they've gone back to metric without telling us."

"As the days go by, we face the increasing inevitability that we are alone in a godless, uninhabited, hostile and meaningless universe. Still, you've got to laugh haven't you?"

The latest Audio dramas are quite different than the first ones. I really do get the sense that these are now written to be heard. For example, actual sound effects play a much bigger role in them, particularly in The Sigillite. - There's a certain situation in it where just reading the words on the page quite simply won't do it justice...

Spoiler:
The characters walk by the outer doors of the 12 gates holding the warp rift under Terra... Even then, it really is NOT a pleasant sound....

Can someone provide a (spoilerised and spoiler filled) summary of the information in The Sigillite for those of us that don't audiobook, please?

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

Just for the record there's actually quite a bit of work to do here still. You don't just download the ebook and press print.

Print books always take longer due to the issues of physicality : printers can only print so many books, those books need to be moved, tills need to be updated etc etc.

.. which is why E-books are cheaper than the physical versions....

Indeed.

I appreciate that print books take longer, but currently that process seems to be taking years, not months. Or worse, they appear in compendiums, or anthologies of books I already own.

As for pressing print, dare I mention 'Print on demand ?

Can't release 'em too soon or people will just go "Eh, I'll wait a bit longer" but with this ploy, it works for them..

Well, it's sorta worked for them. My attitude recently has been, "well, damn, if I'm paying 20 quid or more for a book, I'd expect someone else to be reading it to me... Audiobook it is then..."

got Fire Caste and Blood of Asaheim on iBooks last night...

i am not sure about the style of the new author writing the Tau...
the books feels almost a bit more like a horror novel...
not a bad read, so far, but very different than the usual bolter porn...

i'm excited to crack open the new Space Wolves novel...
i have enjoyed Chris Wraight's other books...
the Wolves are my favorite chapter, so i'm always happy when they get a book...

I haven't been paying attention to Blck Library since october, so excuse me if it has already been discussed, but am I right to assume that Angel Exterminatus will not be coming out in the same format as all the previous HH books??

As far as HH book go, it's the hardback first, followed by the oversized trade paperback 3 months later, and the usual mass market paperback 6 months after that.

9 months to wait for the MMPB is a joke.

With thanks to Mr. Xisor, snap of the limited edition Tau novella they had on early sale at BL Live !

Hope to read this in the next few days.

Finished, and enjoyed, "Traitor's Gorge" yesterday. I'm a big fan of Kantor and felt the book(let) did him justice. I do like the way that Mr. Lee makes good usage of the marines enhanced long term survivability, like he did in a previous space wolf story IIRC.

The WFB "Time of legends" series is shifting ( from book 2 onwards) to the larger tradepaperback format.

The first books released in the mass market/regular versions will be rereleased ( as/when) in this format too.

The marine on the cover of there is only war has to be some of the worst proportions I've seen in a long time. I am no artist by any means, but compared to the rest of the black library books that one sticks out....and not in a good way. Sorry if I'm hypercritical on this.

It's an odd armour pattern too. The marine looks like he's holding a bolter in a power fist

Personally I still find the cover art from some of the Space Marine Battle novels even worse, hands down.

The space marine battle books are just weird. Ever other cover leaves you asking "what weapon/vehicle is he suppose to have there". The marine focused short stories (what I assume that one is) are odd and badly proportioned but at least we can tell who is holding what.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I have the cover to the Space Marine Battles: Helsreach for my desk top on my home computer. I got it back when they used to give them away. It's one of the more inspiring pieces of art they've done (that was free).

It looks like this, but without the title and calendar.

WHAT ONE’S RIGHT FOR ME?

Since we introduced the two new formats for our Horus Heresy range, we’ve received a number of questions, notably:
What size are the new formats?

What is the time period between the releases?

Will I be able to continue my paperback collection?

So we thought we’d devote today’s blog to answering these.

What size are the new formats?

A picture is said to paint a thousand words, so this seems like the best way to compare the new formats with the existing paperback range:

hardback collector’s edition is the first to be released and contains not only the story, but four exclusive illustrations, an author (or editor) afterword, a numbered spine (so you can easily keep your collection in order) and the full cover art printed on the hardcover.

The trade paperback is a large-format softcover that includes flaps on the covers, inside which you can see the full, unadorned artwork.

Finally, the ‘legacy edition’ paperback is exactly the same format that collectors of the Horus Heresy will be familiar with.

What is the time period between releases?

The first of these formats to be available is the hardback collector’s edition. This will come out alongside the unabridged MP3 audiobook, the Enhanced eBook (including the illustrations and author afterword), the poster and the digital wallpaper. You can buy these on blacklibrary.com and we’ve even put together some bundle deals to enable you to pick up the different formats together. The novels themselves will also be available from Games Workshop Hobby Centres.

Next, we have the trade paperback. This deluxe softback edition is available from blacklibrary.com and in all good bookstores. It is released three months after the collector’s edition. For example, Betrayer was released in hardback at the end of December and the trade paperback will be on sale at the end of this month.

Finally, we come to the legacy edition, which will be released alongside the regular eBook, six months after the trade paperback.

Will I be able to continue my paperback collection?

In short, yes. While small mass-market paperback books are rapidly disappearing from shelves in favour of eBooks or more premium formats, we are committed to continuing the Horus Heresy in this style, so that all those fans who want to have a consistent look to their collection can do so.

If you have any further questions about this, please feel free to email us at contact@blacklibrary.com and we will do our best to answer them all.

..well.. fair play to'em for at least responding to people's confusion and bewidlerment.

Yeah, only the HH books - everything else is to printed in the "premium" (premium? the only thing premium about them is the price!) size that looks so odd on your book shelf and feels so huge in your hand.

Who's the pillock who started all this off, and can we have him shot?

It was GW's decision to expand their rather bafflingly stupid "premium hobby" policies to the only subsidiary that was still catering to a mass audience.

Needless to say, we won't be seeing any new HH releases making New York Times Bestseller lists anymore.
