Subject: Re:The Iron Warriors 122nd Log; Captain Amit?
My only critique would be on your OSL. The light that is reflecting on say, the chest armor for example, would be darker then the light source, even if just by a little. So Id suggest anywhere, where light is reflecting, you should put some blue wash over it to dull the color some. Itll give your OSL a more natural look to it.
Also, LOVE the demon engines, specially the one with the demon host floating up through the top, that is just badassidy

With 16 days until the tournie, it's time i best get a move on. I've gs'd the first squad, and begun painting. I've also build two new hero marines and an autocannon.
And as a bonus here are some commission Pre-heresy Emperors children i'm working on.

Now, i've got until thursday to finish this army, and it's second half only arrived on friday. Fortunatly, it's all built now and i'm a good chunk into the green stuff section of the modelling, meaning the final push is relatively close.
The only real problem will be getting the right level of detail on my librarian, but i'll worry on that later.
First up, army shot;
then the librarian with force axe and combi-bolter
I've decided to opt for more warmth in the pre-heresy side of my forces, so here is the first plasma gun test model;
And finally three of the five objective markers are built, and one's finished.
As always, feedback is welcomed.

just over 24 hours to finish my army... here's where i'm up to;
some group shots of the three characters (1 lib, 3 sgt types)
I think it's time i brew a good cup of twinnings and settle in for a long painting session.

the havocs and dreadclaw are done, here's a close up of two of them.
it doesn't show the hazard stripes on all the missiles, and hard to make out but its there! well... it's a bit table top rush quality, but i'm up against a deadline and since i'll have spare time afterwards re-doing some details isn't the end of the world.
next update in about six hours when i hope to finish everyone by the librarian.

After 14 1/2 hours of straight painting, 250ml of mead, 1 can of beer and a headache to split the earths crust i'm nearly at the endzone. My goal is in site, here is where i am up to as of 11pm. My army, a few photo's of the table top quality painting. I won't lie, not my best work, and i'm going to be re-doing them after the tournie, but i needed it done effectivly and quickly so i hope you forgive me.
3 of the objectives were built for this, one for an ork force, the last is a random mini to make a 5th as i'm fresh out of care. All that's left is the librarian...
C&C welcomed,

Update time, i've finish the army in its current vision. Conclusion; postage delays are killers. Orange doesn't make for a good power weapon colour (and will be turned blue next weeks). iron warriors are awesome.

Oh skrall, how I envy you! I only have 5 Mk III's at the moment, so wish I had more. Whereas you, you! have an army of the little blighters! Lucky lucky you
I wish I had your painting skills to cudos on the Iron Warriors mate, they look bloody fantastic.
Love the conversions you've done on your seargents to, nice work!
I was thinking of doing Iron Warriors as my Night Lords allies myself but the only problem is the names clash hahah yeh a very silly and daft problem but I'm using greek names for my Night Lords as I see major variation in the Night Lords ranks in reference to names, and the Iron Warriors have greek names so oi vay.
The Rout, Vlka Fenryka, Warrior Kings of Fenris.... the Space Wolves. Horus Heresy. Sixth Great Company. 1500pts. In progress.

Do what i do, i walk my iron warriors through a borderline of Greek naming. Basically by way of justifying the lore of names and design i choose is instead of a solid greek culture it instead runs through the 'regions' viewed through greek eyes. For example, Albion (the old greek for britain). I keep a celtic/tribal underlay to my design and evolved through medieval perspectives with greek influence (i.e the classics). Huron/my runepriest librarian model is the best example of this, the upper command structure retains a touch of the greek influence/overtone, the lower ranks have a more basic gaelic/late medieval england feel to them.
I find the problem with trying to make the Iron Warriors Greek is simple; they aren't. The culture of the iron warriors (grand companies and siege masters) don't fit with any portions of greek culture i'm aware of (though my greek history is fairly limp i'll admit). I much prefer the notion of them having a more northern european feel about them, it just feels natural to me. Oddly enough though, the medieval style which would suit greek culture is the Imperial fists.... guess it explains why the iron warriors are the polar opposite.
anyways, if you want to run an allied company might i suggest Gaelic names? for example Arailt (or any masculin name from here) would make a good name for an iron warrior without running into the pre-existing greek names your using. If it helps, your welcome to use the 122nd (or any company after the 50th IMO) to justify using not greek names for them. There are some pretty viscous fluff gamers who've got the impression the Iron Warriors should be greek, the ultramarines roman and the raven wing native american when in ract they could be anything.

except ultramarines. They are defiantly roman.

Hmmm, okay okay. You know I never really looked of it nor looked at them like that. I always assumed and thought they were very Greek e.g. their homeworld is Olympia (Olympus) and they were ruled over by 12 tyrants (the gods). I like that Gaelic name very much, it's fitting without sounding too out there and away from the general Iron Warrior concept. I think I may now scour the internet for Scottish Gaelic names and such, thanks a lot for that handy tip skrall!
As you can see my sig is ready to burst with prospective or started HH armies, and now I may add my most beloved Iron Warriors to said list..... YAY

Oh i know the notion, but i like to view it in a way that fits my tastes. I don't like most of the Mediterranean cultural influences (roman greek ect), but the idea of a ruling class having a completely removed culture from it's lower ranks fits. It's kind of like when english aristocracy was french/of french cultural influances but the peasants were still saxon/gaelic/celtic types. With the evolution of isolated worlds being what they are, the extremis of this giving rise to perhaps 12 sub-cultures ruled over by greek overlord (perhaps even after the aspects of the greek gods). For example perturabo would have been (my guess) in the state that follows under Athena's or Zeus' guiding star. However the 122nd would've come from Hephaestus' or possibly even Artemis' given states. I'd probably wager i'd develop it along the lines of heph's since he's a forgegod (which would fit with the medieval celtic development i choose).

Yeh I see what you mean. I must disagree with you there however, I absolutely love the Mediterranean cultures, so much so they actually inspired me to carry History onto my Leaving Cert. (Irish GCSE's/SAT's if you know what I mean) and I'll even carry it on to third-level education. The Greeks were amazing which is one of the small titbits that draws me towards the Iron Warriors, but everybody has his or her own interpretations of everything so to each his/her own. If anything mine would probably come from the realm and culture of Ares, the god of War. I imagine my Iron Warriors as being utterly void of any feelings, mechanical superhuman soldiers designed to do nought but slay in the name of Olympia, Perturabo and the Emperor. I could imagine the events on Olympia, their rising, their taking to the stars, then the purging of Olympia taking a heavy toll on the Eleventh Company to such an extent that they are just killers, killers and nothing less nor more.

Now for an update, and first off we've got some cultural lore/theory work going on.
[i]The Twelve Tyrants
It has long been that Olympia has been ruled over by the twelve tyrants, and remained so until the Emperors arrival during the great crusade. The system of the tyrants never changed, only the size of the domains they ruled and their relative power status' with one another. The largest of the 5 landmasses hosted five of these tyrants (including the region of Lochos), the smallest, and arguably wealthiest, landmass belong to the Tyrant of Iarrnaig. Iarrnaig's regions represented the pagan god Hefanes (possible derrivative of the old terran god Hephaestus), for the region was often harsh to live in, with highly fertile soil, owing to the high level of volcanic activity. Indeed, this heavy volcanic activity has in fact become the source of the regions wealth, for it is rich in metal work and craftsman ship.
The regions fortress' are similarly evocative of this, for the earthquakes and other natural phenomina in the region require them to be even greater in their stability. It is said they were the first to develop iron and steel re-enforment beams for their stonework, and indeed it is reported that a great many of the walls are topped with metal rims and parapet's. It is from this region the Iron Warriors recruited a great many of their smiths and artificers, indeed a significant portion of the 107th-132nd company's specialists are sourced from this area. However, as is typical of most hierarchical structured societies the divide between the rich and the poor also made them an almost completely seperate peoples in there own right. It is notable that only the tyrants and high aristocracy spoke soley in high gothic, and Olympian. The lower aristocracy (a merchant tier) spoke a host of languages, often including both high and low gothic, ancient terran and the native tongue of the Iarrnaig region. The speach of the region is vastly different from it's high society, being drawn from a pre-golden age technology language which has spread to only a handful of worlds, though it in far more wide spread use on such worlds, where more than one region speak it.[i]
I'll be developing more lore as this goes on, i'm probably going to write a cultural history essay on olympia as this rumbles on, paticularly developing the 12 tyrants as an almost separate society from it's working classes, who will (largely) speak different languages based on regions. However this is a modelling log not a history essay, so here's some model stuff.

Small update, i've managed to rebuild the second chassis for the speeder and located all but one seat from the third.
On a side note, this kit was designed to make grown men cry, sit in corners drooling or rage quit the hobby. It takes more superglue and pins than the dark gods themselves could devise to hold it together. still, i love the look of the thing.

I'm wayyyyy to productive today, i'm currently working on my cataphractii terminators, first up the squad leader. He's PIP, but i want to see how people are feeling about the use of a Red leather like effect to distinguish veterans. I also wanted a new avatar to reflect my pre-heresy routes since the Warsmith avatar doesn't quite fit.

Looking sweet Skrall. Dark Angels for an allied contingent.... I could dig that, they were preety sweet pre-Heresy, more-so than post that is. I have been led down the path to Olympia as well. I'm thinking of switching my Legion for the Iron Warriors, there is just something about their character and the almost emotionless brutality of their psyche, I like them. But yeh, looking good as usual

Man those are some sweet Iron Warriors. Would you mind telling me how you did that red plasma glow and the blue glow from the claws? I'd love to use them in my painting somewhere. I feel your pain about staying up late to paint an army for a tourny. They looked rubbish once I was done but I redid them after. Keep up the amazing work!
