Subject: Iron within! Pre-Heresy 63rd Grand Battalion; Arming for the apocalypse

So begins my return to Iron Warriors. This project will take a number of months to complete since i'm waiting on a codex; Chaos marines (since the old one was discontinued in 2007).
Here's my early WIP's, pre-green stuff on the marines, and alot of work on the rhino and iron clad. I've also put together an iron warrior sorcerer using Ahriman and some mk3 armour bits, simple but he works well enough. most of this is pre- GS so its just loose constructions.
Now guys, i want a moment of your time. i'm doing commissions via ebay atm in order to raise funds. regular viewers of my work will know i have a passion for building warmachines. And now i'm giving you the chance to get one quite cheap (i need the money for this army)
So, without further time waisting, here's your chance to own one. The Transfiler
take a look, if you like it i am building them quite cheap, the cost covers the defiler and a AOBR dreadnought for the base.

Thanks ghost! i'm really hoping to do something special here.
Not quite update time; I've got some more pic's of those older transfilers to show off; most of which you'll have seen, but i'm hoping to convince someone to buy one...
I've now lowered the price to £75, which includes the defiler, a dreadnought for the base/parts for the transf' and construction (which takes 4-5 hours). i'm hoping someone will buy one... i could use the cash to help fund my own progress in this log.

Hi guys, i've finished modelling the first iron warrior;
The Green stuff has been left rough in places as part of my planned painting process since i'm not painting this guy in clean silvers.
C&C Welcome!
Similarly, check out My ebay where i'm selling a few 40k items including a contemptor dreadnought.

Update time! about 18 months ago i found a box set from space crusade, payed £6-8 for it with about 7 inferno's thrown in. I realised... this box set contained older weapons... i've now found enough to save me £10.50 from forgeworld! during the search i also found an old sorcerer i was working on in this current style... so i now have iron ahriman and an actual sorc.
I've also done more detailing work on the first rhino, though it does make me want a deminos patter so i don't have the same hastle next time around.
C&C?

Update time, finished the basic details for the rhino.
I could also use some advise on the dreadnought... i'm struggling to think of ways to make it more chaotic without the default of adding rhino spikes.
Any advice?

thanks man, i've pushed him a little further, before he was a touch too monotone.
Ok update time! for this i've changed the base details to add hazard stripes, a busted/active excess/waste pipe, touched up the yellow and silvers, added a basic freehand iron skull (i'm not a huge fan of it, but i have yet to see an alternative. i've also changed the skin to a blue tone to break it away from the browns/reds of the steel and wires.
Please ignore the gold, i've lost my bright gold and my dark golds dried up. It's the only thing on this that needs major tweeks.
Any C&C? i think he's pretty much a solid example of a completed warrior.

Wow, no freaking comments on this thread? Major WTF. These are amazing! The rhino conversion especially. I love the techmarine conversion too. Have you thought about maybe adding horns like the ones on the chaos termies to the dreadnought? That's not obtrusive, but definitely makes it chaos. Just food for thought...
Keep up the good work!

Very promising so far, not sure if it's the Pics but the armor could use a little shading IMHO to help it not blend together quite so much. Very nice caution striping though.

wow thanks for the comments guys! i was beginning to worry.
@Gal; i'm happy with the way it works atm, though the gold will be more defined on the more chaos heavy models, which should solve some of the blending.
Update time, i've stripped one of my old forge world models, removed the iconography and magnetised him. Please ignore the discolouration, it's a side effect of the stripping process dying the marine red. First time it's happened, so i can only assume i left him too long (3-4 days). I've also stripped, rebased and pin drilled the old terminators for use in this army.
The lord is still heavily WIP, there's alot of detailing and clean up left to do, but he's promising. More updates in the next few days.

So, update time on the iron warriors. After careful consideration (i.e ooh that's cool. lets do that), i've started the glowly powersword technique for my iron warriors. not bad for the first attempt i'd say, i'm happy enough given the rest of the model isn't painted yet.
the inside of the axe went a bit wrong, but i'm not to fussed as i realised no one will see it without turning the bugger over. They will be painted in the same was as the test warrior, so there's something to look forwards to.

ok guys, so i've decided to write up exactly what i am going to be building over the comings... well, years.
10 Rhinos
3 landraiders
5 dreadclaw drop pods
5 predators
3 defilers
3 soul grinders
20 Dreadnoughts (Berossus' siege company for dead sun black sky fans)
3 decimators
1 chaos warhound
50 chaos marines
10 plague marines (siege marines)
10 beserkers (shock troops)
10 thousand sons (why not?)
30-40 Havocs (10 missile, 5+ on other varients)
1-3 daemon princes
10 raptors
various warsmith/sorcs
3 chaos dreadknights (for when i play terminators as grey knights)
20 terminators
1-3 stormravens
some other big shooty stuffz
Other units;
dark mechanicus
Savage morticans
that's the current outline, i'm not sure if it will grow or shrink with the upcoming codex's, but i aim to have 10 dreads, 2 squads + nurgle unit, 10 dreads and the warsmith done for middle of the year. i expect this will grow a bit, or halt when GW releases necron second wave, at which point i will halt it to complete my 1500 fast attack necron list.
Currents as of the 13/3/12 i have;
4 dreadnought wips
10 terminators
1 rhino
10 marines
3 havocs
warsmith
sorcerers + ahriman
anyways, as part of my 1500 point GK iron warrior list i've bashed together 10 terminators, i still need to finish the medic and second heavy weapons guy, but this should provide a good basis for my list. My lord's also got a third set of arms now;
All still PIP, paticularly the lords sword which is only half done.

Good stuff dude... your wishlist for the army is truly massive. I started out that way but a piece of advice, do one vehicle or squad at a time it is less overwhelming that way.
On the dread I love the ironclad body but for iron warriors you have several options without just adding rhino spikes. First is to add random exposed power cables, you can use guitar string or get a tube tool, and regular jewellery wire. Cut some thick plasticard into armor plates and add rivets for a more chaotic, beefy, extra-armored effect. If you do go for spikes, add A LOT and cut long blade-shaped pieces of metal to jut out and paint up rusty. You can also take those spiky rhino bits and cut off the spiky part close to the base for sawed-off rods that give an industrial feel. Get some cheap jewellery at the dollar store for chains and add them on in places too. You can get a metal mesh kitchen strainer at the dollar store and cut it into squares and overlay a metal mesh on some parts of the model. There are also some good tuts for razorwire here, or buy some from the internet and wrap it around certain parts of the model.

i'm planning on working on it army list by army list... well, asides from the dreadnoughts or walkers in general... i'm hooked on walker madness. the current 13 model army is worth 1500 points... mainly cos its greyknights. 11 termies, 1 dread, 1 knight.
update time with some hastily taken photo's, the first two powerswords are done i've painted up a terminator to about 80%... i've lost my fine brush to final highlights and the entire human element are on hold till such time as i find it or buy a new one... and i've started work on my double autocannon dread.

Yeah, I can see that. Let us know how that list works out by the way. I'm planning to do an ad-mech force using the GK list, 13 models is great! I would have to copy that except that I want to model up a bunch of other cool stuff for it (maybe a flyer) so why not use a henchmen list. I still can't bring myself to proxy my chaos as grey knights though. I am very hopeful about a new codex.

C&C welcomed,
Do you find it easier to do the OSL effect first and then paint the model? I usually do it the other way around so the overspray gets on the model for the glow effect, and then I don't have to repaint it on. I would really recommend you do it the other way around unless there is something I'm missing. Other than that the powerweaps look good.

it's my way of working, i put down a masking fluid layer over the OSL, i can then paint and weather the rest of the model freely. if i use it the other way around it would ruin parts of the paintjob on the rest of the model, as you can see from the photo's the paint goes in places the lighting wouldn't.

That's true. I suppose I like the other way because it's faster, but I will have to correct it sometimes when the paint goes where the light won't go, or i'm not careful enough with the airbrush. generally it comes out okay though because light bounces around a little bit too, especially on metal. It can even be good in some cases... although it isn't a place the light would go in real life it still creates an optical illusion of the light shining.

It's time for an update of truely gigantic proportions.... i've now assembled the models for my 1500pt GK/ IW force. total; 13.
The two walkers are heavily wip, paticularly the daemonknight which has a few details and some joint fixing/filling/clean ups left to be done before i progress further.
not much left to do now, all i've got is the daemonknight and rifledread to finish building, then paint up's and that's 1500pts worth in the bag.
'course then i begin the rest of the project. fun times...

Update time; i decided to push for the final model completion tonight. I'm both happy and not with this one... the model itself is a good idea, but because of the multiple recycled parts and pre-existing damages on the various comp's it does through up more than a few problems. Whilst it may not win model of the year award, i think it's a great forefather to other daemon engines i may produce.
You can probably spot a few problems with it, but all C&C is welcomed.

Truely inspiering stuff, makes me want to start working on my own Iron Warriors again. I especially like the terminator with the powersword and shield, looks really brutal.
Where did you get the arm for your first warrior, the one with the powerfist holding his helmet? Also, the torso on the sorcerer that isn't Arhiman. Keep it up!

1) Helmet/fist is from the masters of the chapter set from years ago. he's still avaliable as a solo character through GW nowwa days.
2) the sorc body is actually one of the metal sorcs, it's the axe wielding one, all i've done is cut him half, removed the limbs and put him back together. the old metal sorcs are still pretty slick, but i would like to see some new ones made.
as for the sword/shield termie, yeah he's my kalador drago for the GK list. It's why the daemonknights got so many GK weapons, in order that he fits into the armies basic army list design.

That Daemon engine looks pretty sick... you've got a nice system worked out with those defiler parts. I like the flywheels and smokestacks. I'm guessing that your problem would be the ball joints at the hip don't look very well connected... I would just build up mechanical stuff around it like power cables/coils and stuff, to make it look like they are connecting things a bit like muscular tendons. It's a great thing about chaos that you can do that, it doesn't have to be precise at all.

the majority of the horned helmets are from the Warriors of chaos box set, though one or two are from the chaos knights set. the bare/basic helmet heads are from the mara horsemen set.
Update time! first off, let's get a family photo for scale. in this there's a dreadknight based mekadread, a dreadnought and daemonknight;
I do love the sheer terror my beasty should stir up in peoples souls.
I've also begun the second daemonknight, this time i've chosen to have the pilot breaking out of the upper hull, which is an on going WIP.
