I have always loved Mike Mignolia's Wendigo from the Hellboy/BPRD books.

Spoiler:

The bottom Wendigo is a different person from the top two images but shows the differentiation that is possible.

I was thinking for the plastic figs in the boxed game, they would have a 23mm flat base, that will fit in the squares and also fit perfectly inside the lip on the 30mm bases if you would rather play with skirmish rules. But if you want to use your skirmish models, the rule would be to just try and center your model over the space. Or, we could make the spaces 1.5", but then the distances and stuff would have do change.. like 6" = 6 1" spaces or 4 1.5" spaces. I wanted to make it easy for people to swap models between games with as little math as possible

Cross compatibility with models between games is an Extremely good thing. I would definitely make that a priority!

The 23mm flat base for the figs in the future boxed game sound like a nice way to make them work for both.

Make the bases for the boxed game sized so that they can be inserted into the "round lipped" bases depressions.

Sorry. I don't know the dimensions of that cavity so, if that's 23mm, forgive my ignorance. : )

yep that was the plan I measured and the inside lip area is 23mm or just a sliver bigger so they should fit in perfectly. But for the lazy, just using the plain 23mm in skirmish will also be allowed. I have a rule now where 25mm 40k sized bases are ok too, so another 2mm smaller won't really be a big deal.

Not sure how we'll do the 23mm bases though. maybe they can be part of the model itself so people don't need to glue. Since it's basically a board game we have to keep things simpler. Most of the smaller critters and monsters will probably be 1 piece sculpts so we can fit more on a sprue. The heroes and tough monsters will probably be multi piece but they'll have to snap together easily. Might steal Zombicide's idea and have each hero be a different color plastic if we can do that. Gotta find a happy middleground to make it easy for board gamers to set up & play, but also have lots of detail and cool poses for people that are into the minis.

Remember base depth. It's awesome that you're thinking about the mini-gamers with the way you're doing bases but, if the tops of the mini bases don't line up flush with the tops of the round lipped bases, there will be those who... vocalize their displeasure. : )

Nah, all Necros needs to do is just make his own custom bases for converting the boardgame pieces to the skirmish game. Then it would be in his benefit to make the boardgame pieces incompatible with the standard plastic round-lipped bases. Problem solved.

yeah I wouldn't want it to be too thick. Though I've seen some base inserts that are taller than the lip and still look good when they're all painted and flocked good. We could probably taper it, where it's slightly rounded and thicker in the middle for support, but thin at the ends.

Probably early next year we'll start looking for some 3D sculptors that have a lot of model kit experience and keep the traditional sculptors for the metal figures. lots of folks can make great looking 3D models, but we're going to need someone who's had experience with plastic models.. like laying out the sprues properly and stuff like that.

Necros, a quick word about the gridless tablecloth...

Wyrd Miniatures has 3x3 vinyl mats for convention tournaments that have their Terraclips bases on them (so they can just use Terraclips for terrain instead of terrain and the board.

They're about 50 bucks a mat, and aren't very cost effective (as of yet). You may want to see about getting into contact with them, they might be able to help you out.

I'm definitely in the gridless side of the market, but if you do go with grids, make them a smidge less than 1 inch squares so people can't pre-measure, or count out the squares during the game.

Well, in BWG people are allowed to premeasure anything, anytime, anywhere so the idea behind the grid was to make it so you don't have to measure.. your gun shoots 10", then that's 10 spaces.

I was thinking if we could do a double-sided cloth matt, it would maybe just be dyed in brown & green splotches, kind of basic, but then 1 side would just have the grid screen printed on it. So for the cloth-board game you can use the grid, and you can flip it over to use for a skirmish game cloth/matt as well.

We were thinking about Terraclips as well, we might approach World Works about that after we finally get the game released. I personally like the laser cut wood buildings, but they would be too expensive to mass produce, but a kit with a bunch of different clip together buildings would be cool.

Oh also .. we're not 100% sold on this one.. some elements are there, but others aren't. Do you guys think they represent the Firefly characters good? Or should we have one of our other artists give it a try too? Even if we didn't use these in the end, we could still easily use the art for other figs too. I think I like Mal & Book the best, the others are kinda tougher to tell who they are.

I'm... not sold.

Doc Simon could look a bit more prim and proper, he was always a bit retentive on the show. And I think Adam James could be made to wear a knit hat, maybe? Also, Julie had curly hair, if I remember, or curling hair. I concur with you on Mal and Book, though.

Yeah, I wanted Simon to be very well dressed like he doesn't fit in at all. Kaylee just doesn't really match and Jayne .. well if he had a goatee I guess it would be better. Either way though, it looks like oure budget for art is topped out now after all so this is going to have to be it. Not that big of a deal for me though, I'll see what everyone thinks and we could always have the artist do some tweaks and also give the sculptor more direction on how to make them look. I like the art in general, just think he missed the mark a bit. But then maybe that's a good thing? We can't really copy everything exactly so maybe just some hints are all we need?

Not sold. I think fans want to see models that really evoke the original source material. In and of itself, it's not a bad looking gang, but if going for a not-Firefly gang, then it misses the mark.

Yeah, I agree. I think what we're probably going to do now is change it around and have Notmal and Notbook be bonus characters to unlock, and we'll keep the other 3 guys to use for another gang's 3-man support pack. Later on when we have the time and budget we'll have another artist do the other 3 characters and make it a full starter set. This also means we'd just have 5 new gangs for the campaign instead of 6, but more support packs and solo characters to unlock sooner, which might actually be better in the long run anyway.. more variety.

Jayne's Hat is probably the one sure fire way to make the Tranquility crew be "instantly" recognizable as said crew...

The other thing might be to give Captain Nathan a long brown coat... but then again... the art would look TOO much like Mal at that point...

Also, what is wrong with Simon's standard dress? He already looks like he belongs in the Wild West (white shirt, black vest, pants, and shoes, with the black arm cuffs). Give him a bow tie though...

Wasn't sure how to do the knitted cap for Jayne.. it's not very "western" .. maybe we could do it as some kind of eskimo hat with the ear flaps? Or a [see forum posting rules] skin cap with ear flaps? His mom could have skinned the [see forum posting rules] first and everything.

For now we decided we'll keep the artwork as is as concept art and we'll look at redoing them down the road before we get them sculpted. We don't have time to redo them right now, we're hoping to launch the campaign on friday or if not on monday.

Also concerning the old campaign, it turns out I made the shipping details too complex for the campaign manager to handle So, Game Salute is just going to fill everyone's orders manually based on the original survey. They're pretty much going to be taking over my KS account and finishing the campaign from now on.

Oh... no it wasn't beaver, it was a 4 letter word that begins with c, and also has 2 o's and an n in it. I guess I shouldn't have left off the ra for racoon

So yeah, something like the kid's hat, but with little ear flaps though I could always just give the sculptor the pic of the kid and just tell him to add a goatee

They started out as just a regular gang based mostly on the HBO show Carivalle, but as I started developing them more things got changed around more and I decided I wanted to have every henchman be a clown The professionals will all be like the main attraction types. Here's their official description

The greatest show this side of the Mississippi! Moving from town to town across the western states and territories, the Flying Zarconis circus comes to bring joy to the hearts of boys and girls, and piles of gold to their own pockets. A haven for people of freakish talent, many of whom are criminals with no other safe haven, the circus takes care of their own, and welcomes all who don't "belong" elsewhere.

The ringmaster, Mr. Zarconi, is a small man with a lot of love for his fellow carnies. A showman, and pickpocket you'll never see coming, unless you look down. Esposito, The Bladesman, is incredibly skilled with any sort of blade, as his name would suggest. His assistant is Maura, the beautiful, but bearded lady who is also a crack shot with her twin silver plated pistols. Close behind as always are the clowns, Mr. Snuggies and Twinklenose, who are often given the dirtiest, and most violent jobs.

Hmm.. I thought a wendigo was basically just a cannibal that's kinda like a zombie just not undead. I read that somewhere.. So that's what I was gonna do for the expansion. undead mindless zombies as beasts, wendigo as henchmen, witches as professionals, and then a boss too which I haven't come up with.

I also want to do mission packs, that would come with maybe 2 new board tiles for special areas, and a bunch of new critters & beasts. Enough that you could also use them as a monster gang for the skirmish game

Trying to do it where it's the same game with 2 modes of play, I guess kind of like Dust Tactics & Warfare. But the skirmish game will stay mostly historical or realistic with metal figures, the board game will be the weird west and mostly plastic. That's the plan anyway

As silly as it may sound...

If you're doing the "Weird West" thing, I hope you take a peek at the show "Supernatural". There are definitely a few episodes which would be perfect for you to get some inspiration from. You mentioned the Wendigo--season 1 episode 2 "Wendigo" is a good one for ya there.
There's also season 3 episode 15 "Time is on My Side" that would be a good one for your "Weird West" bit. It's essentially a take on the whole "Snake Oil Salesman" motif and the Elixir of Life myths.

The Weird West bit is something I'd love to help with the brainstorming on, if you'd let me!

Actually, it's kind of evolved into Wild West Supernatural Although I won't be getting to much into the whole angels & demons stuff. Maybe some day, but to begin with I want to stick with folklore monsters. Jensen & JareD Manchester will be 2 of the bonus monster hunters in the game
