not at the speed you lot procrastinate at, I can't Oh and go vote on my damned tardis wench Ok randomly, after talking with one of my followers on Tumblr, I started to think about scaling up Tyranid's to try and figure out their size if they were real... and I found GW books really don't do their size justice in their descriptions... going on the assumption that GW models are 1:48 scale... My converted Hive Tyrant from nose to tail translates to roughly 32 feet in length... and has a wingspan of 52 feet A termagant is just over 3' high to its shoulder with a length from nose to tail of just over 8' a Tervigon is 20' tall with a length of about 23' and a width of 12'... I'm sorry, but if I was a guardsman in the Imperial Guard... I'd kill myself sooner than fight Tyranid's...

Thats a good point, about scale, it means a hormogaunts claws are close to 3 feet long!

Actually a Hormagaunt/Termagant is 8 foot long nose to tail and 3 foot tall to its shoulder... quite a scary thought tbh
and welcome lols, yeah I know what you mean about models, well hopefully by page 100 I will have at least 3 units done... but with how much we procrastinate round these parts it varies lols...
Thanks for the Flyrant love too, painting him is on the horrizon... just got to power through some termagants and some Hive guard first...

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, i wouldnt attempt to scale heads up in 40k... they'll end up looking like the balloon heads in Sim Hospital...
I think as a rule of thumb with vehicles just add 33.3% of the end number to itself and you'd get something close enough...
... and there seems to be a discrepency in working out the flyrants wingspan too... as the wings arent quite enough to give it proper flight... there's a ratio for working out how big a wing span needs to be to attain flight... but I forget what it is

A 1/48th scale, 6' tall guardsman without a helmet would be 1.5" tall. GW human figs are closer to 1.25" tall, which would be 1/60th scale for our helmetless 6' tall guardsman.
28mm minis are also often called 1/56 scale figures, so I would suggest running your scales at 1/56 or 1/60 (or both...).

1:48 scale is the generally accepted scale in comparison to GW miniatures. But, it is only as a rough scale, especially considering a SM is the same height as a Guardsman, is the same height as an Eldar is the same height as a Sob is the same height as a Tau etc etc.
now considering a true scale Space Marine figure is about 2", if you go by the 1:48 scaling, you get an 8' Marine, exactly the height they re supposed to be.
But I would be inclined to believe that Tyranid models are the right size already to be scaled into 1:48. the same goes for Guardsmen and SoB (guardsmen are only thought to be the average modern day height which = 5'10", and SoB are thought to be of roughly the same size). Tau are a little shorter being about 5'5" and Eldar are closer to 7' in height.
So as I say, 1:48 is the rule of thumb, because the GW range is not in scale with itself like myself and RW have already said.

Brian it's 28mm aka Heroic scale, but the main problem as I said before is that all the mini's are the same size so there is no sense of scale what so ever...
