So what are everyone's thoughts on tracking non-public rumors. Someone PM'd me directly some rumors that weren't public and wants to be tracked on them.

I'd prefer not to. As much as I have a joke tracker for myself, I don't want to be a rumor tracker. There's also the problem of PM'd rumors being non-released to the public. It's easy enough to tell me 'don't release this until it comes out' and then when it is false they say 'Don't release it'. I dunno, seems like a lot of work for nothing to gain for the public.

Sounds like they want to build up a reputation for good rumors before going public. I suppose it's not a bad idea, but then the only proof they were right relies on Pretre's word which I'm sure would lead to some...interesting discussion.

Also the comparison to Naftka and his anonymous sources would surely follow. If Pretre posts them, he'll have to track it under himself since he leaked them.

That's just an odd situation- say they're proved wrong, and you just say, "Hey everybody, here's a bunch of false rumors." It wouldn't be news by that time.

Someone wanting to post anonymously through pretre? Simple enough, just give him a pseudonym and track him under it.

Or is this someone just telling you stuff without allowing you to pass it on, but expects you'll give him points for it and unveil his awesomeness at some later date?

The problem with posting through pretre is that he essentially become Nafkta. Posting anonymous rumors, and it could tank his credibility(if he cares for that) if there are a lot of falses. Plus you get in to someone running arumor tracker that they're taking part of- could be some issues with fair representation for other rumormongers.
Giving them psuedonyms makes anonymity useless. Some person is still being identified as a rumormonger, even if they aren't using their own account. They could be identified as a leak if they aren't jumbled in with other rumors.

There's also the problem that he wants me to hold the rumors. I.e. He PM's me on 1/1/2015 with a rumor to be held for 1/15/2015. It comes true on 1/13/2015 and he asks that I credit him the rumor.

True, unfortunately. I'm not terribly worried about that though. I just don't want to be fussed about dealing with that part of it. The tracker is already a big job.

Could it be they want to know the validity of their source, and are confiding in you(pretre) to help prove if they are reliable or not before trusting them more later?

I think this is exactly it. I don't know how I help with this though. They could simply not post anything and hold onto the first couple of rumors to see what happens.

You give them some validity- you run the rumor tracker. You say they were right with X rumors, they say here's Y. They start off on a good foot, and avoid the derision from posting bad info. I can especially see someone doing it who posts in this forum quite a bit wanting to avoid tanking their reputation.

The dark side of the ORAT is that it doesn't go away. If someone was mislead it can follow them for quite a while.



You have a reputation too you know. When you post someone is unreliable, you back it up with the ORAT, and that carries quite a bit of weight. Same as when you say someone is reliable.

What they are wanting(I'm assuming) is for you to come in and say "they were right", instead of "no rumors" when they go public.


I just realized that when someone posts rumors, you can just tell people to "Ask the RAT".
