The only thing I might suggest is going with a matte finish rather than gloss. It's totally your call, but it's easier to see the details of the model when it's less shiney.

Thanks for the compliment . The shine is mostly from the shader - I'm waiting for it to dry and will then retouch it - I like how the inside mouth is all glossy though. If it goes too mat while drying, I'll manually add a gloss to keep it that way.

Looking real good on the bitey treasure chest there mate (mimic?)

I just posted a bit of a wishlist for the next Bones on their forums:

More of Tre' Manor's sculpts. The size is in that large humanoid range that Bryan suggested, and their fine detail came out rather excellently. I'd also like to see more of the larger monsters and such that would easily proxy into people's wargames. I know that Reaper has their own fanbase, and that they're also the default "go to" ranges for D&D players, but Warhammer has been going down the really large monster road for awhile now, paired with a price to match. I think appropriate-but-still generic Bones-proxies would blow them away and sell very well to both markets.

Phoenix with optional rider?
Dinosaurs with optional riders?
Big-old Vrock-type demon?
Great big flaming not-balrog demon with ornate armour, a whip and an axe?
Another bone giant (not bent over!)
More options for Ogres, Trolls and Minotaurs?
and so on...
For roleplayers, painters and wargamers, that stuff is Gold, Jerry. Gold!

Picked up my 2nd Bones mini today. I've had my eye on the Large Earth Elemental for years, but at $6.99 I finally was able to pick it up when I saw my FLGS had the kickstarter minis in stock.

Unfortunately when I got home and opened it up I realized it had two right arms Anyone know how to contact Reaper about mispackaged minis?

Should take care of you right quick.

I would like to see them move some more of their Warlord range into Bones. They have some excellent infantry and cavalry...not to mention all manner of big monsters. With the low price point, it would be hard not to be tempted to use them as proxies when you can pick up half an army for the cost of a single boxed set else where.

Beyond that...the rest of their big, but not huge range. I like dragons and cthulhu is great...but I think I would have rather seen this guy instead:

He is a very impressive metal miniature, but every time I use him in games, I feel like I should be wearing steel toed boots and wearing a back brace due to the weight of all that metal. There are a bunch more in the $25+ range of metal figures which are small enough to be used in most games, but so heavy that I tend to skip them. In Bones though, you dont have to worry about the joints or if they take a tumble off the table, cracking any toes...or tile. It is also a heck of a lot easier to cut up...so I might well have three or four of him on the table as opposed to one on the shelf.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Agreed... also, you can always add a matte finish spray (such as Testors Dullcote) on top of any other finish, even a gloss one. That's actually a trick people use to make colors more vibrant, even... I'd like to see that same mini after a matte finish

Has anyone heard from Reaper about replacements/missing parts without emailing them in the past week? I only ask because I emailed them after getting my box, and I don't want to be that guy sending them an email every 20 minutes bugging them about missing bits if they are already on it.

I got my stuff and emailed them about missing stuff a while back

they said they'd move on to dealing with those once all the orders were out

and that includes Undertaker (ie retail level) pledges that they've still working on so I don't expect any movement on them for a week or two yet (or more?)

I emailed them shortly after they sent the final kickstarter update. Got an auto reply saying yes, this is an autoreply, but we got your report and will fix it. I won't worry till its been a while longer, to be honest.

Just got mine yesterday, and found a little note at the top:

So, I got a spare dragon :

Ya know, I was just starting to get the itch in the last couple of weeks wondering why my stuff wasn't here yet (I'm generally a pretty patient person), but this has definitely made up for it!

The real question though is which dragon?

I am already planning on ordering a 5th and 6th Clock Work dragon...that guy is a perfect size for table top gaming and has a lot of potential for conversions and painting. Might get another Big K in order to make a desk lamp out of it.

Just bit the bullet and bought the Bugbear model. It was both refreshing and interesting to buy a model using spare change(I paid the whole amount in quarters/nickels/dimes).

This stuff is bendy! There wasn't much flash, really clean and crisp detailing. I've a friend who is thinking of using these in boardgames, and we're going to match pieces up.

Soon I'm going to convert it into a warboss.

Sonnova... that would be so cool!

The Auld Grump - if I had thought of that then I would have ordered two more....

Just got a bones giant from ebay- sword seems to suffer from WSF. Luckily, I bought it to use only the lower half in a conversion... but the sword is something that would really suck if I needed to use the whole model.

After hearing about how bendy the plastic was, the thing that suprised me about the box I got was actually how stiff everything seems - I've only been through half the vampire box so far (I'll be unboxing the rest at club tonight with the guy who bought in with me), but the models are by and large pretty stiff, only a couple of weapons were bendy, and I can live with that (they might well straighten out and stiffen up with the right treatment too apparently, so I'll be trying that soon enough). Haven't opened Cthulu or Kaladrax yet though, so they might be a bit soft, but then again I was expecting something like the early Bugbear models which could have their clubs bend in a full circle (from the research I did before the Kick Starter) would be the norm (and for cheap D&D minis, I was fine with that), but they're actually quite solid feeling.

The War Store in Long Beach has them. The manager there wasn't too happy about the kickstarter, as a lot of his sales went to that. Even now, he's selling the Bones version of Kaladrax for $75, ebay has the kickstarter ones for $40.

I kinda see his point...

I am angry with Reaper, so I will shoot myself in the foot?

Not a great point to make....

Reaper's point was 'dang, it costs a lot to make molds... let's punt!' Without that Kickstarter there would not be two hundred new models....

The Auld Grump

*EDIT* That is assuming that the Long Beach War Store normally does discounts - if not then that is a null point.

*EDIT 2* One local store's reaction to the Bones Kickstarter was to give a 10% discount on the existing Bones to folks that supported the Kickstarter. They saw it as a good thing. They even had shared orders on the Kickstarter itself - letting folks pay for Kickstarter items from the storefront pledge level ahead of time, defraying the store's up front cost and saving the customer some money over retail.

Chris, I did suggest it there.

Also, Brookhurst Hobbies also has the Bones models in stock, but they seem to be selling them pretty well. They haven't complained at all. In fact, I think the KS actually boosted their sales of Reaper product just by generating interest.

Being mad about Kickstarters is a waste of time. Just think about all the Pathfinder players and miniature painters who didn't participate in the Kickstarter. Mantic has reported that their non-KS sales of Dreadball have already more than tripled their sales during the Kickstarter.

Two of the local stores are stocking the whole line of Bones, neither of them are the store closest to me though. Though my regular store has been giving me issues lately and it might be time for a change in terms of where I game regularly.

I keep special ordering things and then they don't get ordered. It's like the person ordering isn't looking at the special order log or sales records when ordering. Things that sell well aren't being replaced and over a month of special orders never got placed with the distributor. So I think I'm going to add an extra 10 minutes onto my commute and go where I can reliably get what I want.

Got my second box of stuff (lots of cases, second vampire for a friend and a bunch of extras). Things to note:

- Not one missing mini - very impressive considering the number of minis we sorted!

- Not one extra mini (save the free Nethyrmaul of course!).

- Nearly half of the minis will probably need boiling - which shouldn't take long, and they need to be washed anyway.

- Only about half the minis fit into the carry cases slots. Cutting out two by two squares (a sharp knife makes this very easy) in various combinations fit most of the rest of the Vampire stuff, besides the big stuff (Giants, Griffon, mechani-ape and a few others).

- Nethyrmaul and Cuthulu are big.

- Kaladrax, however, is HUGE. Seriously HUGE.

- The number of little baggies is ridiculous, get a large rubbish bag.

Only issues were one model with a nose missing (she looked like Voldemort) and a hand off one of the green ghosty things, neither of which I would have bothered about replacing except that my friends Clockwork Dragon was missing a shoulder shield, so we'll probably get them replaced at the same time.

Overall, I'm really really happy with everything. I'll probably sell off the Kaladrax, if only because I couldn't store such a massive thing, and while playing it in a game would be cool, it wouldn't make the table more than once a decade (and Nethyrmaul is perfectly capable as a stand in ).

I had that problem with Kaladrax; it's an awesome model and obscenely cheap considering the size, but I didn't think I'd even have somewhere to store it let alone use it. So I sold it for a small profit to offset my other stuff, before I saw the suggestion to turn it into a lamp, that'd have been awesome :(
