The only cavelry that is good in 8th is heavy cavelry that is durable enough to take lots of low str attacks and also has enough damage output to be able to out grind infantry blocks.
Only a few units qualify for that,
Mournfang Cavelry, Chaos Knights, and Dragon Princes(on a good day). Brettonian cavelry does well because they have enough ranks to actually negate steadfast, not because they can kill enough of the enemy.

The unit gets very pricy that way, its also overkill. The Vampire doesn't increase their damage potential verses most targets.
Now they should be within Command range of course which will mitigate their Frenzy.
You also don't want your general to get stuck in with the enemy and leave his army at the back slowely slogging up the field. The enemy can just eat your general while he's unsupported and watch your approaching hordes crumble.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Couple of things about the dark elf tactica that strike me as off. 1- The assessment of the master BSB. 2- The assessment of corsairs. 3- Shades. Are. Brilliant. 4- Being told to skip the sacrificial dagger is wrong.

I particularly agree w/ those. Shades are arguably the best unit in the book and the Sac Dagger is arguably one of the more OP'd items in the game for a magic-heavy army (huge, cheap spearmen bunker isn't a huge burden to include in a DE list). The Corsair assessment is kinda both right and wrong. In short, he says they aren't bad (right) but there are better options (wrong, depending on general's play style/list, etc).
His assessment for the Master BSB I actually agree w/. Granted, the Hag may probably better (again depending on the play style/list), but an unkillable BSB is quite nice. Although being "the better option" is quite subjective. (A quick note I think I've brought up in this thread before - a lot of subjectivity in those guides that come off as objective. I don't like that! )

They are effectively witch elves with armour, one less initiative and no poison. But if push came to shove, I would take corsairs over witches as corsairs don't eat into my shades/black guard allowance. I agree with the unkillable BSB statement, but the fact that a hag is a combat orientated character on a cauldron which can buff the army as well as being T10 vs shooting with a 4+ ward save makes her one of the best BSBs in the book for 225 points makes her incredibly cost effective. And I agree with the whole subjective thing.

Necro Knights are good too.
In the TK section, it mentions Ushabti being good. I don't see how, they are probably one of the worst choices in the book.

hah, I noticed the TK section was just copy/pasted from 1d4chan (is ID4 from there?), which i was coincidentally just checking yesterday. I think their entry of Ushbati now has a 2nd opinion of them sucking, though.

Awesome thread guys thank you
Looking into HE and am a little confuse
Original view suggests Archmage, Mage, White Lions, Phoenix Guard, Great Eagles with residual points on spearman.
And Teclis is a god.
Bit later thread suggests Dragon Princes are solid and can be very good.
So is that the guts of building a competitive HE army for tournament play?
Thanks

A couple of my regular opponents play High Elves, though I don't play them myself. But yeah, you're basically correct. Some people run Swordmasters over White Lions or Phoenix Guard, and I consider Swordmasters to be the best of the bunch. Dragon Princes aren't bad at all, but some people don't use them.
As for tournament play, many of them (most of them?) don't allow special characters and/or ban Teclis outright, so I wouldn't consider him if I were you.
Finally, if the rumors are true, High Elves are probably up next for a new armybook! Exciting times on that front.

None of their units will get nerfed.
Teclis and the Bookof Hoeth are whats in the sights of the nerfbat.
Spearmen, Seaguard, and Archers might become a little cheaper.
Speed of Asurmen could get changed to not make you ignore ASL from weapons(so Swordmasters and White Lions lost their rerolls) but other than that no real nerfing.
Bolt throwers will become cheaper for sure.
