Two really fun games with the TAC (Take All Comers) Marines going heads up with Draigowing and Frankie's Harliestar (this was one of the most fun games I've played in ages!).

As an SM player I am really enjoying these Batreps, thak you very much Reece! Any thoughts on how you would take the concept up to 1999+1 that you would like to share?

Kind of a shocker that you won two kill point games against draigowing and harliestar. This list continues to surprise but I think your downfall will be the necron air force. Cant wait for that report.

A vindicator and whirlwind?!?!?! Sacrilege!

An Ironclad can take 2 heavy flamers, one in each arm, or can take a hurricane bolter which could be situationally alot of fun and different as well. It's AV13 I think would work better for what you are doing, and might give you an excuse to take Vulkan as a 2nd HQ in larger point games.

But he couldnt really take vulcan without losing out on a big part of his army. Combat Tactics.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

If Ben Mohlie can do it, so can Reecius!

I think tyranids will give this list a lot of problems! That is one army where you could use the heavy weapons.

Interested to see how this list performs against necron flyers (not necessarily a pure flyer army).

Did the dreadnaught have its full base within 6 when it deployed out? the back of its base looked too far away for a think a base with a 4 inch diameter.

Also for the dread that would have failed its charge, it looked like part of it would have clipped cover and so the charge would have been slow anyway

In regards to the quad gun, anyone can fire it, not necessarily the side that bought it. So as far as I know nothing stopping you from shooting your own fortifications.

Why do you say it would struggle against nids?

I feel like it would do well against nidzilla builds since it's slower and he still has a fair amount of ap3 and below weaponry from the bikes, plasma guns and vindis.

Similarly horde nids wouldn't be toooo bad since he has 2 large blasts and the flamer dread.

The only build I would think would be trickier is something with raveners/gargoyles and so forth, which can move quickly enough to clog up the lines. Also the all commers nid list ive been working on might do some damage as well (though it's very 'wavey" and thus potentially prone to defeat in detail, still trying it out).

Because nids are very good against static armies like this. Ymgarls to screw with the units in his deployment zone. Gargoyles to multi-charge and lock up units until reinforcements arrive. Termagant spawned by tervigons to tie up units as well and the TMC's to absorb the firepower of the marines.

Nids are usually a tough matchup for regular MEQ armies if the tyranid player knows what he is doing. And I'm talking about a balanced tyranid army with big guys and gribblies, not nidzilla.

@olliswe

Thanks, glad you like them!

For 2K I would add a T-Fire cannon, a unit of 2 Typhoons, and an assault element, either Assault Termies or an Assault Squad. I think that would really round it out well.

@yodisisray

Yeah, you and me both! I thought Jy2 was going to school me, but the list is ultra flexible. If it can best Cron Air, then we have a serious winner on our hands! I have to say though, that in all 3 games, the dice were kind to me. That definitely helped. I think a little bad luck could really take the teeth out of this army quickly.

@Whitedragon

Yeah, and as Son of DOrn pointed out, with assault launchers he gets defensive grenades too, which gives him stealth against shots within 8"! Pretty cool. I may have to try Ironclad. Also, as we allow FW in our events, I think the Seige Dread will be a great addition to this list as well with his H. Flamer and a Flamestorm cannon! Bad ass.

@motyak

Yeah, Combat tactics is BOSS! It makes the army super slippery. It would take a lot to give that up.

@Jy2

Thanks, haha, but Ben Mohlie is the master of Marines.

I think Nids will be giving ANY ground based army trouble in 6th, they are so good! I think this army has the tools to do it, but it won't be easy, and yeah, Ymgarls are brutal against this list.

We're going to try it against Cron Air next, I think that will be a great test.

@Leth

I may have goofed on that one, some other folks have asked that, too. I thought it was within 6", but it may not have been. If so, that is my mistake.

And yes, the dread may have had to pass through DT, but I let no opportunity to hate on random charge length pass me by! haha

The quad gun is a bit confusing. Is it a KP? There are a lot of rules about it that I think need addressing.

Awesome job Reecius! I'm loving the TAC builds. Keep up the good work.
I'm finding TAC to be far far more fun to play in 6th. Glad you guys are finding it similarly.

Next time I'm in the states, I've gotta go check out your store. (I think I might be in the bay area in Nov for business, might stop by but probably won't have any armies >.<

Great reports Reece, very entertaining to watch.

Here's my take on the fortification vs. kill point question:

Only units give up Victory Points in the 'Purge the Alien' mission and Fortifications aren't units. On page 109 of the rulebook it says: "Unlike units, fortifications are not found in codexes. Instead, you'll find a selection presented in this book (see page 114) whilst others will be presented in White Dwarf..."

In addition, the Gun Emplacement rules simply say that:

"The gun emplacement can be shot at and attacked in close combat."

Even for the full-on fortifications (such as a Bastion), the building rules (on page 92) just say that they use 'aspects of the Transport vehicle rules', but again not that they count as a unit in any way.

And you should note that buildings can't actually get destroyed...they can only get to the point where they can no longer be occupied, but they are never noted as being damaged or destroyed.

So I don't think there is any basis at all for any fortifications to give up a Victory Point when they're destroyed in a 'Purge' mission IMHO (although it did make your games a whole lot closer!).

Also, for the Stormhawk (or whatever its called), its Assault Cannon can pivot wherever its able to pivot to on the model, so if it can pivot 360 degrees around, then the weapon can be fired that direction.

Thanks again for sharing!

P.S. - you're clearly doing some sort of video editing on these (as you're putting on the front intro card and adding all the notations at the bottom during the videos), so why not ease the transition in between turns a tiny bit? You tend to stop the camera when it is pointing at exactly the same angle as when you start it up again, which is a little jarring (coming from an editor I'm sure I'm a bit more picky than most).

Why not do a quick transition or even put a quick screen up a few seconds saying what the next turn is? Just a thought! Hell, I'd even do it for you if we figure out an easy way to ship the footage to me. How big are the finished movie files before you upload them? And what type of video file does your camera create?

@Sudojoe

We'd love to have you! As we like to say, "out store may be small, but it's fierce!" haha

And yeah, lists like this are just more enjoyable to play IMO. I like the challenge of finding ways to apply the tools correctly to beat stronger armies. It's much more engaging than playing my missile wolves for example, where you just overpower the other guy with math.

@Yak

Thanks for clarifying on the Fortifications. As usual, I find myself agreeing with your interpretation. I think it is a tad unfair, but hey, a lot in this game is. Man, that makes the Aegis even better. We'll see if they address it in an FAQ but for now I would agree with that reading of the rule.

And if you would like to assist us that would be awesome! The camera films in HD, it's a JVC Averio, I really like it. I could probably use Dropbox to get you videos if that works for you. They are rather large files.

And yeah, we do use Windows Movie Maker for editing, and we're self taught (as I am sure you can tell). We're tying to make them better and get more of polished feel. It is just taking us time to work it all out.

@thaka

Glad you find it funny! That is just us playing the way we always play, and so I am glad it is amusing because we definitely have a pretty rough sense of humor!

Dude, I forgot about the FW dread. If you guys are cool with FW, I think the Flamestorm Cannon variant is just want you're looking for. Otherwise the Ironclad does everything better than the dual flamer dread, and with Stealth is just bonus!

And yes the combat tactics marines are slippery, but the circumstances to actually have a chance to take a leadership check in CC can vary wildly. Keeping that in mind, you can adjust your tactics just a tad and then benefit from Vulcan's buffs.

Plus, Vulcan can use his 2+ to shield the fellas.

That's a very good point, and Vulkan is a boss in combat, too. He makes the rest of the army better, as well. If one were to use Vulkan, I would definitely suggest all M.Mletas on the Tac squads.

And yeah, the Contemptor and Siege dreads are awesome! Such good answers to flyers, and well, to everything, actually.

I was looking at running plasma cannons on my tactical squad with most likely a plasmagun. Really enjoy the battle reports and they are getting better all the time. I tend to disagree a lot with your articles sometimes but seeing you guys while playing the game has really taken the edge off of that negative competitive impression. Makes it easier to read your articles with a more open mind. So thanks again.

If you really want to give them a more polished/professional feel might I suggest a tripod or one of the one legged ones so that you can hold it very steady while filming. I really like how I saw a battle report where the guy had mounted a camera on the wall/ceiling from two angles and was able to film both and then switch between the two when editing.

@Leth

A lot of that is because we stopped being mad about rules we didn't liked and just started enjoying the game again and I think it shows. We normally just feth around a lot while we play, even when we are playing to win.

I am glad that the media we're putting out is more enjoyable now as it was a bummer to be mad about things we couldn't change.

And yeah, the camera rig over the table is something we really want to add in, it's just space right now more than anything. Our store is small, and we don;t want to crowd it with the rig, but eventually we will definitely do that. I think a tripod is a good next step.

I have yet to play a game of 6th, then though I just got back into the hobby. It's nice to see you guys having fun, even with a competitive intent.

I actually have a full body tattoo, but it's of an invisibility cloak, so you can't see it.
