In the Space Marine Codex, it clearly states that the Hurricane Bolter (attached to my Ironclad) consists of three twin-linked bolters. The question I have is, when they say bolters do them mean the standard boltgun? or do they mean any bolter such as the storm bolter (doesn't sound right, because that would give me 6D6 with a reroll on the misses).

Bolter AKA Boltgun.
Yes that would be standard Bolter, not stormbolter

Oh, would this also mean within 12 inches I receive the option to fire twice?

Yes you would. With re-rolls for being twin-linked.

It's not an option; if you're within half range, a rapid fire weapon must fire twice (p52).

Rapid fire is an option. "...can fire two shots" It doesnt say "must fire two shots..."

Rapid fire is not an option. It does not give you a choice to do anything other than fire two shots if you choose to fire.

Please cite the rule you are referencing because nothing on pg 52 says that it is mandatory

Again, it says you can fire two shots. It does not say that you can fire one shot. It does not say that you can fire upto two shots. It does not say that you can fire three shots, etc. If you decide to fire, you are only given permission to fire two shots. Perhaps you can cite rules to back your interpretation that when you can fire two shots it actually means something else.

Page 51 very first paragraph says that if you choose to fire a weapon you must fire it at full effect. Not a choice.

That was what I was looking for. "Can fire two shots" is not an absolute.

The thing is, why would you not want to fire at full effect?

Although i suppose if you wanted to avoid the risk of wiping out a unit you want to assault with something else.

ALso, about the Ironclad, i've heard that keeping it with the DCCW and Seismic hammer is one of the best ways to run that variant of dread

If you are that worried about 6 bolter shots, then just don't shoot at all.

It is not an absolute because you don't have to fire, not because you could choose to fire at less than full effect. You fire at the rate the rules permit or not at all.

Again Ghaz, your doing nothing to support your arguments. Antivas pointed out the rule and pg it was on to resolve the issue. It works much better that way.

You would not want to fire to full effect if it had the possibility of denying your own charge? I've had to hold back from firing before for that very reason

Actually it 100% supports Ghaz argument - the "can fire" is permission to fire, not permission to decide the number of shots. Its also the same rule since 4th

No, you've not provided on thing to support your argument. In neither 5th or 6th edition could you choose to fire at full effect and 5th edition did not have the additional reminder that you could only fire at full effect. So once again, you either fire at the rate listed in the rules or not at all. Even without the rule that Antivas quoted, you do not have an iota of support for your claims that you can fire at less than full effect. None whatsoever.

EDIT: That should read "at less than full effect"

As per pg 52 in the BRB:"A model armed with a Rapid Fire weapon can fire two shots at a target up to half the weapon's maximum range away.
Alternatively, it can instead fire one shot at a target over half the weapon's range away, up to the weapons maximum range."

Combined with the rule on pg. 51 about using your weapons to full effect this means that if you are greater than half range, you must shoot one shot, if you are equal to or less than half range, you must shoot two shots.

Oh boy, I started an argument. I didn't mean "option" per say. I just meant that I get to use it to its full effect.

Not really Vel, I had missed the rule on 51 about the max effect. Thats what these forums are for.
