The main problem with the Avenger is the limit of four weapons per turn at full
BS. If your target is
MEQs you're always going to shoot the main gun and the two lascannons, so buying another anti-
MEQ weapon means you're seriously overpaying for it since only one of them will be able to shoot at full
BS. Instead, if you buy the upgrade weapons, you want to add something that gives it a better secondary role.
IMO, this means either:
1) Hellfury missiles for anti-horde duty. They're great for removing targets from cover (I hear aegis lines are popular these days), and add nice volume of fire in combination with the main gun, keeping your expensive fighter from becoming a paperweight when the
MEQs stay home.
or
2) Multilaser or
AC for killing flyers. Either of these is a significant boost to your
AA firepower, and we all know you can never have too much
AA. Note that you'll be shooting these instead of one of the lascannons.
In theory if you face a lot of stuff with 4+ saves or worse you might consider a load of bombs for barrage sniping heavy weapon carriers, but you probably aren't going to get all that much use out of it, and you're paying for a full load of six bombs when you'll be lucky to drop more than one or two of them in a full game.

This is actually a bad thing because of the four-weapon cap. With three good weapons already (main gun and 2x
LC) you'd be much better off with a single twin-linked weapon (even paying the full price for two guns!) than one and one snap fire.
