Still got the AoBR release issue kicking about. I might compare that one and the Dark Vengeance issue to see how much it's gone downhill even in the last few years.

Interestingly enough, I Was flicking through an old WD the other day and it happened to be that very issue. The biggest difference I noticed between the two starter sets is about £25...

Yes, coincidentally, the Lord of the Rings set, "The Three Hunters" was released in 2008 and has now been released in Finecast for this issue. 2008 price = £15 / 2012 price = £22

Do you even read Dakka's threads, or do you just ctrl-v the same vacuous reply onto a random selection of them?

If you want the same experiance as a WD subscription..

Just go into a GW B&M store and ask a salesman what new this month...
Then hand over £4 and say 'thanks' ,and walk out...

'Ah ,we cant actualy put hobby content in the WD magazine, because then we wouldnt be able to sell you the expencive hobby books, would we?'

What hobby books are these?

Beyond "How to Paint Citadel Miniatures in a bland and boring way", I can't think of any

They used to do books on making terrain, but they had to go when GW started selling terrain.

In the 2008 edition, we do of course have the obligatory AoBR battle report. Note that this battle report has maps and is not played on a Realm of Battles gameboard (which had yet to be released). This month's battle report is not a battle report at all. It's two people telling you about a game they played with pictures of the miniatures from Dark Vengeance.

I bought the 6th Ed 40K issue of WD - the first WD I've bought since... since Apoc came out I'd say.

I was so disappointed at the Battle Report. I want detailed maps and whatnot. The reason I stopped buying WD in the first place (way back around issue 220-ish) was because the BatReps had degenerated to the point where they were a few photos and some meaningless text. I know they got better and went back to their full-maps and turn-by-turn summary ways... but that seems to have died off again.

I sent an email complaining about the lack of content this month and got a reply back. My comments will be passed onto the White Dwarf editorial team and I've been offered a refund (which I had demanded)

Now, having used this copy of WD as a fly swatter yesterday, it is a little worse for wear, so don't think I'll bother with the refund, but I am going point out in my response that the content issues are clearly reflective of GW's current overall approach and therefore not the fault of the editorial team.

I've given up on WD to be honest. It's a lamb that's been well and truly sacrifced (along with the GW website) but I am at least impressed that they responded in a positive manner.

I got one recently, and was a little disheartened by the first 40 pages basically being adverts...

I gotta be honest, at a pit stop during a long boring journey home today, I picked up a copy of the new WD. I have ordered the DV box set and was interested in seeing pictures/reading stuff about what I'm getting, so figured at least this issue would be packed with pictures/adverts of stuff I like/want/have rather than boring LOTR crap. I'm really sorry, but I actually really enjoyed it. Yes it's overpriced, no there isn't any good editorial or well written material in there, but it's given me a couple of ides for stuff with my armies, and the pictures are oh so pwetty... this month ticked a box for me. No way in the warp would I subscribe though, I only want 40k issues, not interested in fantasy or LOTR/Hobbit so just have to pick and choose which ones I get. Think this is only about the 4th or 5th WD I've picked up since the AOBR issue with the free Nob on the front.

Any Officially produced magazine is always going to be an extended advert . Maybe we should broaden this a bit, maybe compare it with the other Wargaming Magazines out there of which there are many.

Wargames Illustrated = Very Good Content for Flames of War or Historical Players. Starting to head the way of WD, as BF starts to become more corporate.

http://www.wargamesillustrated.net/

Unseen Lerker = Sounds like a Stalkers Magazine but it isn't! Worth a look, much more content and less of a corporate suck c**k than WD.

http://unseenlerker.com/

Miniature-Wargames - Independant so forget all the GW stuff, it's great to see whats out there and see other miniatures you could proxy for your 40k Armies (Imperial Guard etc). I like Independant Magazines because they haven't got to push a product and can afford the luxury of honesty.

http://www.atlanticpublishers.com/

http://www.atlanticpublishers.com/magazines/miniature-wargames/

There are alot of Magazines out there, don't give GW anymore money for their corporate W*nk rag they call a magazine.

Allegedly WD is returning to its roots of content based pages. Won't hold my breath as the last issue was roughly 99% Dark Vengeance pics with no special rules/point costs.

DO. NOT. SUBSCRIBE.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Also, Ravage magazine, which in some ways is fulfilling the function once carried out by White Dwarf in being a generic sci-fi/fantasy wargaming magazine.

Available from CMoN in the US, and Maelstrom Games here in the UK/EU. I keep trying to push this because I feel it deserves to get a lot more recognition, and should have some kind of 'toilet read stamp of approval' !

Here is the blurb from the website:

Our third installment of the newly re-imagined Ravage Magazine US is just a hint of what we have in store for the future. Miniature game enthusiasts and hobbyists alike will notice that this issue is different than those before it, with our content moving towards being unique and never-before-seen in print! We have gone to great lengths to pack it full with useful game information and hobby skills from a host of different professionals throughout the industry.

Each issue of Ravage US gives us the ability to help build a stronger backbone within the miniature game industry. We publish it to give different game publishers and artistry companies a chance to open their minds and share with readers all over the world. This magazine offers information from sources that some readers may not otherwise get the chance to see. This is what Ravage means to the industry as a whole – a common ground where all miniature games, gamers and designers can come together to combine forces for the better of gaming everywhere.

Ravage US #3 contains several articles that combine to form a beautiful tome of great information. This issue contains interviews with the lead designers of Dark Age, an informative method to rapidly bring miniatures to “tabletop ready” quality, reviews of new games and products headed to stores, the first ever battle report from the new upcoming Wrath of Kings, a review of Forgeworld’s new Monstrous Arcanum, and a sneak peek of some fiction from Sodapop Miniature’s Relic Knights. All of that and more, printed in a full-color, high quality format for the low msrp of $6.99!

And some pics of content:

i have some disposable cash, so I pick the the occasional WD, mostly to see if some rumors are true and read the battle reports, but I could get that just as easily by going to DakkaDakka, and I don't pay anything for it

Also, Ravage magazine looks pretty sweet! I'll have to purchase one some time

It's worth pointing out that this month's White Dwarf (which I bought partly as a test, and partly in the hope of some bonus content for Dark Vengeance) takes the piss rather spectacularly. A double-page spread (pages 6 - 9) for each of Dark Vengeance's forces is fair enough, but when the same models - with the predominantly the same paintjobs and accompanied text - get the same treatment again on pages 25, 26, and 32 - 39 (in an issue in which the lengthy "battle reports" [pages 40 - 63] and the "painting guide" [72 - 75] are also accompanied by yet more pictures of the same), one begins to realise how little respect the magazine's staff have for their readers. The sense of grinding repetition isn't helped either by Jervis electing to write his unbearably dull column about writing his unbearably dull column. (Seriously GW, Jervis won an Origins award, you should perhaps consider employing him to, you know, write your games rather than a rambling and pedantic column about them.)

Now I fully understand that White Dwarf's primary mission is to promote GW's latest offerings, and that I'm well outside its target demographic, but seriously, is this lazy, repetitive page-filling the best they can manage? Writers are not expensive. It really should not have been beyond the WD staff's capabilities to include a few bonus scenarios or an in-depth painting guide that would actually have made the magazine worth buying and keeping, and which would, quite frankly, have done a better job of selling their boxed set. As it is, I haven't even collected mine from the post office, and already I'm bored by it.

That's why you do it between the toes. Less obvious.

But, to each his own I guess. Personally I think it'd be worth it at maybe half the current price at most...
You know if you see a sign that says "$12 and I'll smack you with this bat" some are going to say it's a rip off, some are going to think it's reeaaly worth it and some are going to act surprised each time; perhaps expecting more, maybe a nail or such (extra content as it were), maybe a softer bat (more fluff) or a different coloured one (more painting tutorials). Some might even want all of those things at once. Everyone else is just going to look it the whole thing strange and wonder why it is anyone really cares in the first place.

Lets be honest most GW Staffers would be happy with the extra income from writing Articles. If Super-noodles had gone up in price at the same rate as GW products alot of GW Staffers would have starved to death.

As far as I can tell, the only place that sells it in the UK is Maelstrom Games (http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=hac_bok_mag_rvg_003_000).

Cost is £5. Maelstrom do free P&P for orders over £10 (so it's pretty easy just to put it in with an order for something else, I just treated myself to a blister pack )
Although, Maelstrom doesn't have the previous issue now, and they have issue 3 on pre-order (its already on sale in the US, so guess it won't be too long).

Otherwise, you would need to buy it from CMoN in the States. I tried asking on the Ravage Magazine facebook page, but again they just directed me to CMoN.

I had thought about asking WH Smiths if they can order it in, but haven't got round to it yet! Would definitely be more handy a purchase if they could, and by rights this kind of magazine should be on the shelf next to White Dwarf.
