Been Around the Block

I finally finished my annihilation barge scratchbuild
It's almost entirely made from paper and cardboard, with a bit of wood and plastic.
The guns are removable for if I ever build a gauss blaster and control panel.
I used UV reactive paint for the glowing bits

That's a really cool idea. I love the glowing paint, I may have to try it sometime for OSL.
The model looks quite good for a paper and cardboard creation. You got the important details and from a distance I doubt anyone would notice that it's not the actual model. Do you plan on adding the pilots? I could see how that might be unfeasible given the construction process. Great job!

That seems silly. It's okay to recast you just can't sell any of it. Also there are like a million thunderhawks that look almost exactly like the FW ones in various threads along with tutorials on how to make them.
Awesome barge BTW.

I could, but I kind of like it without them, so probably not. Have you seen my overlord?

I've had the WIP up in my P&M blog for a while without complaints

Scratchbuilds are fine.
Recasting is illegal in most countries; even for personal use. While minor casting only for limited pieces of projects may not do harm, we cannot encourage or condone it, as it's easy to shade over into harmful and illegal recasting, and we need to stay on the side of caution.

Regarding a recently closed thread featuring recasts, a debate arose on how recasts aren't allowed, but scratchbuilds are.
Scratch building your own model is building your own model. Copying someone else's model is copying someone else's model, regardless of how you do it.
Scratch-building an Ork trukk that looks identical to the original would in fact wind up on similar shaky ground to this... it's still a copy.
- Insaniak
Just saying...
That said, very convincing build; can barely tell it's not GW.

no as its your own work , and unless you try to sell it .your fine ,
exp. if i went a sculpted a space marine from scratch {wire built up with putty} didnt include any gw parts and then painted it up and used it my self then thats completely differnt to me getting a marine figure and useing it to make a cast for multiple parts .
if the op was building a copy of the gw model and then selling it ,,then it would be differnt ..

Note the 'identical' part.
A copy is a copy, whether you make it from scratch or use a mould. In actual practice, though, scratchbuilds almost always wind up slightly different to the original, simply because it's practically impossible to recreate the original model exactly with the tools that most hobbyists have at hand.
Where GW are concerned, there is also a certain amount of leeway with scratchbuilds, since GW specifically allow 'one-off' custom models on their legal page. No such allowance is made for casting.

That is one extremely impressive scratchbuild. Looking at it vs the picutre of the real thing on the gw website it's difficult to tell them appart. The only way that I noticed was the little ribs going across from the back, looking at the little glifs and details... I'm almost tempted to say wip or that's not a scratchbuild... it's too good!
Anyways awesome job.

I havent built any flyers like this yet, but I did make a proxy of one a while back. You can use battlefoam trays to get the size right.
@mods: I assume I cant distribute the templates for my proxies?

That piece would be incredibly difficult to get right, so I left it out. I'd have to curve it while the glue was still wet, but I'd need to put the ridges on after the glue dries and before bending

I really like the scratchbuild, there, MD. It's both constructed and painted well.
Scratchbuilds are fine.

Which is fine, though I have to say that I am saddened as a GW player that this is something Dakkadakka is forced to do out of fear of GW's draconian leagal bullying. I can open up a Privateer Press magazine and look at fully PP-sponsored greenstuff casting of their model's insignias for use on other models, and many, many threads on their forums that deal with identical issues that are left alone by PP but dragged down by GW.
Although all that's tremendously off-topic for this thread. Essentially, this is Dakkadakka's forums to choose how to moderate, so they get the call. I just hope it doesn't spill over into scratchbuilds like this, because I love seeing (and making) them.
