So, that terrain in your avatar, the mouth monster coming frm underground... will that ever be for sale? Because I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Terraformer wrote:If I could pick you guy's brains a little, what do you think is the best way to make a resin-cast urban base that can be customized to different sizes? My first thought was a grid of sculpted slabs of concrete that can be "snapped" at the seams, but this might be difficult if the resin was thick/sturdy enough to serve as an alternative to an MDF or similar base, and it also creates the issue that some "edge" features would have to be eliminated or redesigned. So instead of a storm drain on a curb, it would have to have features like flat grates on some of the slabs of concrete, etc.
I wasnt thinking of snappable parts, but more parts that could be reasonably easily sawed - maybe in the region of .5cm thick? (I admit here that I am not a huge user of resin, so I have no idea how stable that would be). I'm pretty certain that I have seen these kinds of items manufactured using laser etched MDF which looks pretty awesome, is lightweight and relatively sturdy and reasonably cheap... however, it does not quite offer the same level of surface texturing as resin does.
I don't know how worthwhile it would be to produce a really thin "surfacing" detail - something 0.1-0.3cm thick that can be stuck onto MDF by the user - and some appropriate height "edging" pieces, taking into account the person using the surfacing details basing on a .5cm MDF board, maybe a seperate sedging pack for 1cm thick MDF (not sure of the common sizes, so you might want to look into that ).

Thinking about it! Long term, I want to be selling a huge variety of terrain pieces and accessories, including "monster bits" and stuff to make possessed or dangerous terrain.

There are a lot of different resins out there and they sure have come a long way since the old days of yellow, foam-like, soft resin that many companies used to use. (And some still do.) the urethane resin I use sets pretty much as hard and durable as any other kind of styrene plastic, only a little more brittle on thin sheets. This means I can make pieces down to about .5 cm and I think it would still hold up as an actual base. I'll definitely be doing some experimenting in the coming weeks. I appreciate the ideas as well, I'll post updates as I go too.

Nice quality. Please consider making 10mm futuristic terrain for Dropzone Commander (and Mechwarrior). There are lots of 28mm terrain makers, there is a real shortage of futuristic 10mm to buy.
We need stuff like futuristic spaceports, hab blocks and other buildings, with flat roofs on which to place stands of infantry 45m wide. Alien stuff would be nice too, especailly if it was a 'Protoss' feel. We have plenty of ways of getting 20th century buildings, either from model railways and Hawk Wargames itself.

Brittleness is a definite problem for resin - by definition, street sections will be long and flat and thin, and so particularly prone to any breakage problems (unless glued permanently in place, of course).
Dare I mention the dreaded FineCast? For all its problems, it is nicely durable - i can imagine a street section made of something similar surviving a drop from a game table to a hard floor, unlike many resins.

Damn right.
What about usinga a laser cut mdf section and putting resin on top? there's a bunch of places that to easy to build mdf terrain. and there's huge demand

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.
