Subject: Dark Angels Contemptor Dreadnought (new pic 8/31)

So I finally broke down and decided to buy a Contemptor Pattern Dreadnought. Given that the Dark Angels supposedly have a new Codex in the works, and that the fluff has always made me happy (they're totally Chaos and don't want anyone to know it!), I decided to paint this guy up as a Dark Angels Dread.
Dark Angels gives three potentials "codex" color schemes. Green for normal marines, Bone for Deathwing or Black 'cause this thing is freaking old! I decided to go with green just to have a little more color on the model. Bone would look nice, but can be a pain to paint well.
I put him together at first and liked the pose, but felt he was missing something. So I glued on a crap ton of Dark Angels bits.
Here are a couple of in progress shots. I'll post more as I have more accomplished. My plan is to do some painting at least once or twice a week if not more and post pictures of each stage. I've never documented a full project before and I'm told it can help a person become a better painter.
Feedback and constructive criticism is appreciated!

Really awesome. Wings may be a little OTT for me, but otherwise its a really cool model, and a great use of extra bits.
What I really love is the green you're using for the basecoat. What colour is it? I dont think its from GW's new paint line is it?

The model was a little unbalanced without the wings. The Typhoon Missile Launcher made him look a little front heavy since they point down slightly. The wings helped.
Also... it's Dark Angels Green! ...or Caliban Green in the new line. They look identical.
I then did a line highlight of Warpstone Glow and will do additional corner highlights of Moot Green. I've already done so on the one calf I showed the detail of.

Of course it's Dark Angels Green. For some reason it looked a lot different to me than usual. Maybe its the lighting, or the even coverage of the basecoat? Anyways, still looks great, and good to know for when I start my own Dark Angels

It might look a little darker than normal...
I start with a black primer coat. In this case I used the standard GW black primer. A lot of times I'll use the cheap flat black from Walmart (Colorplace?). I forget the name.
Then I take the Dark Angels Green (or Caliban Green) and water it down to about 25/75 water/paint... sometimes a little more. I just eyeball it. It ends up as the consistency of fat free milk... kind of watery but still not see through. I then put down about 4-5 wet layers that I let dry in between layers... it doesn't take long to dry at all. In areas that I want to stay darker, I only put down 1-3 layers and more of the black shows through... like maybe the underside of an armor panel.
Pure Dark Angels green without the water dilution would probably go on a little clumpier and definitely a slightly brighter green color.

Ah, this looks great!
I can't wait to see the finished product.
and good use of extra bits. That is one great thing about playing DA, the Ravenwing sprues come with a ton of extra bits, as well as the DA Veterans and the chapter upgrade sprue all have a ridiculous amount of extra bits.
I have a pot of old DA green and a new pot of Caliban Green, and they are slightly different, the also cover slightly different. Do you know which one you used?

I used Dark Angels Green in this instance.
There's definitely a slight color difference, but depending on how you put the paint down (I use multiple watered down layers) you can get differences from the same pot.
Also, once I highlight fully and add in all the details, I'm not expecting it to cause an issue with other models painted with Caliban Green. I've painted models using both and I'm happy with the results.
Also... once I'm done with this guy I have a Relic Contemptor I'll be painting up as a Pre-Heresy Dreadnought for the Dark Angels... meaning black armor with red logos. I figure a Relic Contemptor is gonna be super old.

The purity seals are very easy... Dheneb Stone (or equivalent) basecoat followed by a sepia wash. Any ivory/bone color will work, but Dheneb Stone covers really well, so I've always used it.
They look better in person. Also, the wash was still a little wet when I took the phots. They're matte finished up close.

I was able to get a little bit of painting done today. Nothing major. I still need to put solid work in on the weapons and base, but I did some detail work on the front of the model. It makes me feel like I'm making progress! haha
Sorry the pic is so washed out. I recently moved and haven't unpacked my light box yet.
