Hi folks, ive just read 'thousand sons' and 'prospero burns', but why did the thousand sons change colour from red (pre-heresy) to blue after the heresy?

Sorry if this has been discussed before, i could find it in the vast amout of TS stuff on here.

Thanks.

Blue is Tzeentch's colour so.... Plus red is the colour of Khorne, and the World Eaters post-heresy.

Most of them changed color. Word Bearers were green before, now they are red. World Eaters were white, now red. It just happened...

Yeah, they started as plain grey, and went deep red with silver trims during the heresy.

Maybe he's getting confused with Alpha Legion?

They were the Imperial Heralds before meeting with Lorgar, wearing green.

All the heretical chapters changed their color to be more like their patron god:
death guard-pestilent green
world eaters-blood red
emperor's childern-pink
and finally...
thousand sons-blue

(please don't be offended if i couldn't be bothered to name your particular legion, but their all the same save for the name and the god they follow)

Huh, interesting. I did not know that many Legions changed their colors upon meeting their primarchs. I know the Death Guard used to be the Dusk Raiders, with unpainted armor except red right arms and shoulders.

Green is the color of caliban. Prior to the outbreak of the heresy the lion had given permission for those companies raised on caliban, as opposed to terra, to use the dark green of caliban on their shoulder pads.

On a side note, I believe they now state that the infamous 'Space Marine' box cover with the honoured Scarface-marine upon it, now represents a force of dismounted Ravenwing, rather than the fact Dark Angels used to be black at the time epic was first released.

Oh and regarding the Thousand Sons, it troubles me to no end that the 'Legion of one Thousand' took up both the colour and black M symbol of the original Sons, no idea why, just bugs me.

Could this make the idea of Blood Ravens being desendents more likely?

Their original colors were those of loyalty to the Imperium.

When they broke that tie, they probably wanted a new identity. Realistically, only a handful of the traitor legions kept their colors.

In fact, only the Night Lords, Iron Warriors, and Alpha Legion kept their colors.

World Eaters - White/Blue -> Red
Black Legion - Green -> Black
Death Guard - Off white -> Green
Thousand Sons - Red -> Blue
Emperor's Children - Purple -> Insane
Word Bearers - Gray -> Red

The World Eaters didn't switch to red until the Heresy.

While the exact point in time has changed (as with many things due to the novel series), but it's still tied to the Heresy, not Angron taking over the legion. They kept the White/Blue for the remainder of the Crusade.

Only four had patron gods. Word Bearers are chaos undivided.

Iron Warriors stayed the same.
Night Lords stayed the same.
Alpha Legion modified their colours but are pretty much the same.
Black Legion chose black to represent their new commander Abaddon.

I don't know if Thousand Sons actually changed their colors. I believe it was Tzeentch who did the changing. I seem to remember one of the Heresy artbooks had a pic of a Thousand Son sorcerer whose armor was both red and blue, as if it was spontaneously changing, or the blue paint was creeping over the top of the red.

As for World Eaters, they have always been red. In the sense that you can't see their paintjob for all the blood and gore coating them.

I have that box, and they're quite definitely black, not green. It's just a bad scan, or more likely a faded picture; old (read 20th century) colour print inks fade to yellow-green hues unless kept out of ultraviolet light.
