You gotta be freaking kidding me right? I live near the event and was going to grab a ticket to play. I like the, let me correct myself, I love the game, but not that much. Do you all feel like gw went over board on this ticket cost? Games day was only $25.00 USD and in July when I called customer service to inquire about ToS, it was slated to be $50.00 USD.

Sure it's supposed to be all the winners of the GTs, but GW should not hold such extravagant events, etc and expect a good solid showing of "just" the winners to show up with out having a reasonable ticket price for the other people that want to buy a ticket to enter into the events and other competitions. I Think I said that right lol. You know what I mean.

IIRC that's about how much the first GT I ever went to cost; Baltimore in 2001. That included lunches and six games.

Last year the event they put on in Vegas was pretty amazing. Great venue, great food (all provided), the schedule (2.5hrs for 1500pt games) was good and allowed time to actually talk to and grab a beer with your opponent as you played. If they're fully catering again, I could easily see this as worth it.

I'm just bummed out that it's the same weekend as Battle for Salvation. BFS is comparatively local, so the travel expenses and times will be much less. Memphis I'd have to fly to, which bumps the cost up, even though I already won my ticket. And BFS is a really fun event, which I did well at last year and would like to attend again.

100$ does not at all seem expensive for a GT. If it is well-run and a fun event with good tables, then it is worth every penny. Every GT I have been to run by GW has been an amazing event and is still some of my best gaming memories.

I would like to check this event out one day. Sounds fun, and being a baby seal, I don't really have an issue with their scoring as long as I have fun games all weekend.

Catered or not there is no way I would or could pay 100$ plus travel and hotel. There is no way I could eat enough food in a weekend to warrant the extra cost for catering assuming you mean you don't have to pay extra cost. I am pretty sure most people will be saving their moolas for Christmas coming up or hurting from the economy.

Me I won't pay over 50$ for a tournament...it's just unrealistic to me when I can play the same game for free with a buddy. On any given Sunday with my GF catering rofl (had to toss the gf joke in).

$50 is kind of the low end for a GT.

IIRC with the weekend badge, and tickets to the two tournaments I attended, my entry to Adepticon this year was around 100.

NOVA Open is $35 for the weekend badge, and $65 to play in the Open. Another $50 if you're in the Invitational. The trios event is $90 (obviously you'd split that three ways).

There are a lot of costs associated with a wargaming convention hosting hundreds of people.

I wouldn't pay that much just for a tournament. There needs to be a little bit of a convention going on to interest me.

$100 is reasonable as long as the food is catered. For a 5-game GT you generally see pricing around the $60-$70 mark with some events (Adepticon, Nova, WargamesCon) being right around $100. It isn't unreasonable but that doesn't mean I would fly to it. In Vegas, yes, I would have gone this year since I already had my ticked. In it's current location, not a chance.

Going back to 1997, I don't know that there was ever a GW GT with a ticket price under $100. In the earliest days your ticket included a hotel room, but that was the late '90s, after all.

It all depends on what you're looking for in an event. Decent hotel space is extraordinarily expensive. You know how expensive weddings are, right? Well, figure a hotel GT is paying the same kind of rate for that same ballroom -- plus possibly additional rooms -- for not just one but two days. Cha-ching. It's pretty safe to say that most major events operate right around breakeven...TOs aren't in it to get rich.

Still, a lower ticket price obviously makes an event more attractive. Thanks to The WarStore partnership, MechaniCon's ticket price is down to $85 this year...about a third lower than last year, and that includes the WarStore Weekend convention badge.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Around $100 is the price that GW always charges for their tournaments.

The problem is that the people who would travel to this event and pay $100 for a GT ticket hate the Throne of Skulls format where your results have nothing to do with how well you did, but how well the other players did with the same army.

I have a free ticket from Vegas last year, that was a ton of fun. I can't make a trip that far even with a free entry though. Not sure if it's transferrable...

The ticket price isnt unreasonable, what you shuld be screaming about is the comparison between what you get for a 2-day GT tournament for a $100 and what $100 gets you of GW product nowadays...lets see 2-day event with catered food, or ONE box of bloodknights or a Stormraven....

If it were in Vegas, I'd go. The difference in cost between this and, say, any other GT I regularly attend is pretty small; if the venue is nicer than a concrete-floored hall at a state fairgrounds, that's worth it right there.

I have no issue paying $100 for a GW Grand Tournament.... For the most part, I'll say that you're going to get what you pay for. (Same goes for Adepticon and a few other of the big tourneys)

I've been fortunate enough to play in 3 GW Grand Tournaments going back to Seattle in 2001 and even then it was never cheap, but totally worth every penny IMO. If I didn't already go to Adepticon this year, I would really consider going to Memphis to play in this. The GW GT's aren't for everyone, however they are serious hobby events that will open your eyes to some of the best painted armies, tables, and terrain that you would find anywhere in the country. A lot of guys in the hobby that might not attend an independent GT will totally shell out the cash for a GW Grand Tournament, if for no other reason than it is completely run by GW.

If it wasn't in Memphis I'd think about it. I do think it's funny that non-GW run GT's are drawing more people than their single big event for the year.....

It looks like GW GTs have lost all of their luster in the US.

Last year they had to put out the call to everyone to get people to show up, and that was in Las Vegas (the only reason why people went to the GT).

Now they can't get anyone to show up so they dropped their prices. It is not like in the UK where they have always had a stong GT attendance, and in a country smaller than some of our states so traveling is less of an issue.

Well I think it's the traveling thing that's the issue. If this was in LA, Chicago, Baltimore, or a couple of other locations in the US people would show up.

Combine poor location with poor format (from a lot of traveling people's perspectives) and with the fact that GW isn't the only GT in the game and suddenly you see them not able to get attendance for their event.

Hell, we can't even get a long thread about it; RTTs generate more interest.

But yeah - GW US really dropped the tournament ball. The good news is that the indy "circuit" has spoiled us for good options in more interesting and/or convenient locations.

Think on this as well....I believe somewhere they had said this will be the last GT. I know Ed Spettigue is gone, and when he left all the support for tournament play dropped. GW hates tournaments for some reason. I don't really see this as being an event worth spending a fortune on.

The information sent to the TOs that were members of the Indy Circuit was that the program would end in May 2012 (supporting Throne of Skulls in October 2012). Speaking with some of the folks in charge a while back, the direction for the future would not be exclusive events and would allow any player to purchase a ticket - this would be the basis for a 2013 program.

These things change every couple years as a new staff takes over from the previous one. The official GTs were cancelled a few times in the past 10 years and there was always a new program eventually.

I would not avoid going to ToS just because there may not be another similar event next year, my restriction is that our main event is too close and I can't swing both into my work schedule. I had joked with one of our club-mates, if we hit the lottery then we would go for sure!
