After a good couple months of worth, I preset my Great Unclean One.
He was created using Sculpy, then greenstuff over that for more fine details. Along with some plasticard for the sword and some jewelry chain, this fat f-- err gent is built from scratch.
The full details and work-in-progress pics can be found at either link on my signature.
I hope you dakkanauts enjoy this guy as much as I have, and will now that hes scuttling around the table.

I took the photos with a low amount of direct light as hes coated with a wash to give him a filmy, waxy residue look and it was giving off a bit too much glare. Also noticing that one of his funnels chipped and now needs touch ups. Hooray noticing things after the photos -_-.

This is hands down the best scratch built/custom sculpted model I have ever seen. I would actually pay for that model, it looks better than GWs finecast Nurgle GD and I like it better than FWs as well.

The sculpting is quite nice. However, and please take this with a grain of salt, I think the paint job is a bit bland. The browns have a lot of depth and look utterly putrescent, but I feel as if they need a bit of brighter colors to break up the monotony of the brown. Perhaps some more reds, bruised purples, subtle dirty yellows, and even the sprinkling of green would break up the brown a bit. I just feel that, between the giant hunk of gross brown flesh and the brown-sanded base, this model just has too much brown on it. So much detail seems to kind of wash away with all the brown.
That being said, I still think the model looks utterly fantastic and the sculpting is superb. I just personally think he's a bit too monotonous as far as his color palette goes.
Cheers!

Thanks for the CC! Yeah I could see that. As mentioned before, the low light may have obscured some of the more subtle yellows, but I did take a second look at the model and will probably punch up some highlights on this guy.

Please don't, he looks wonderful, as it stands the colourscheme draws the eye to all the right places; first that wonderful face, then the gashes and rents in his flesh, the tiny wee maggots, and then you begin to notice the weapons, chains, armour, the little scuttling legs - a masterpiece.
You should cast this up chief, they'd sell like hotcakes. Seriously I would buy one just for the face.

Now that I really look at it, a few highlights on the tusks and the feet, and maybe a few brighter reds on the guts would really make him pop more. Just that might be a vast improvement and really make him pop! I know all about how lighting can sour even the greatest paint job. Seems like you need to be a photographer as well as a painter sometimes!
Cheers!

Funny you mention that. That was the original intent of this model, casting it and selling it. I began building it in pieces, but as I progressed with it, namely the sword arm and the gunk built up around the back...things, the idea of hacking it back into pieces was not sitting well. I ultimately decided to keep it together and just finish it. This model was my first venture into an scratch-built organic model so I was a bit leery of doing anything too daring.
However! I am currently gearing up for a new project: Plaguebearers. I plan on keeping them in the quasi-insect theme I've been running with and plan on casting and possibly selling them.
As I was working on the concept, I thought " Whats something gross that people hate...roaches!" So I've been working with that. Obviously going to avoid any iconography and such so I don't get sued and have my life ended. Id be building them in parts so they can be completely customizable, much like a normal kit would be. Probably going to do 5 different bodies, 5 different heads and a leader type head. some arm and leg variants, and probably a banner and musical instrument so they would be able to be fully utilized as a Plaguebearer squad. Hopeflly will be starting that in the near future.

Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless and perfunctory gift nobody ever asked for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down because there's nothing left to drink. Sure once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or a English toffee, but they're gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. If you're desperate enough to eat those all you've got left is a. An empty box, filled with useless brown paper wrappers. |

Thanks for all the comments folks! I am glad people are enjoying the legs. I felt it'd be something people are either all about or kinda meh towards. I felt like to make this a truly unqiue sculpt, there had to be some substantial deviance from regular Great Unclean Ones, but enough in common to be able to identify it as a Great Unclean One. One thing I definitely wanted to change was the legs, partially due to the face I really wasn't up for sculpting toes. I've been rolling with a light insectoid/chitinous features on my demons/mutations, and just idea of him scuttling around but a grin on my face. The other big change I wanted was the face, which I'm happy with the result as well. Infected, swollen and torn gums tends to get people to sqiurm, so that worked out nicely
nerdfest09 wrote:sometimes things like this when scratch made can fall flat on their face! but you've done a marvelous job of this guy! I love the scuttling little legs transporting his bulk around, it works nicely and your painting has done it justice superbly! well done!
One thing I stand by, mostly because it is my field of expertise, is making a concept sketch for my sculpts. This way, Im not going in blind and changing things on the fly. For regular GS work, I dont really do any sketches, unless I have something in mind I really want to nail. Such as these Plague Marine Heads.
However, for scratch builds, it is absolutely necessary to have an pre-conceived idea and reference so you have a plan of attack going in. Even if you cant/dont want to draw, collect a bunch of images and use them as a reference sheet of sorts. With a good foundation, you'll have a better idea of how to go about building your model. This was the initial concept for my Great Unclean One.
As you can see, some things stayed, some things went. Such as the sword design. Originally I was going to take the sword from the Nurgle Daemon Prince (I had used the model but not the sword for my Big Daddy daemon prince). It ended up being too small and I felt ultimately it would be better if I just made my own. Also note the varied concepts, like the face and lower body, Its always good to toss around a couple ideas, as your first may not always be your best.
That turned into a bit of a rant, but its always fun to share my creative process.
