I'd go with this option, only take it out when YOU need it. Also it might not be a bad idea to just call people out for it when they take it. Dont have to be rude or anything but just confront them and tell them it would be nice if they would ask to borrow your book before just taking it.
Also if your playing at a GW store....maybe you could tell everyone that if they dont start being a little nicer about taking your stuff you might mention to the store manager that no one has a rule book and you think it would be a great "sales Opportunity" for him to try to sell everyone a rule book....nothing says respect my stuff like like the threat of a sales pitch from a GW employee

Write something rude on the cover. Also, a warning.
"This is Kronk's Rulebook. There are many like it, but this one is Kronk's. If this is found in your possession with your asking leave, (INSERT THREAT)."

Bind a chain to your book, and put the chain on the belt-thingies on your pants.
Sure, it weighs, but still

Just tell them straight. If you see someone using (or misusing) your book just say "Do you mind not handling my book? I payed an ass load of money for it and I'd prefer if it didn't get mistreated."
I'm sure people will understand. Remember though, being polite will more likely get things done.

Subtlety alter your book so the rules favor you. I.e. if you have no flying monstrous creatures, just do a little light editing to that section. Nid players will soon stop stealing your book. Same with the psychic powers your army doesn't have access to. They just got nerfed.

If you have a cover on it, print off the cover of a different book, and paste that on.
If they want to look in the 6th BRB, but there's only a copy of 5th around, they'll leave it alone.
Maybe.

I suggest a sound thrashing with the BIG book. Next time it disappears and you have to go off and find it use it to flatten he thief's mini. The more annoyed you are the more you flatten. Start with some small plastic guardsmen. Want to make your point use it to flatten something finecast! Next time you take my big rule book I flatten your flyer!

If it really bothers you that much just tell people you would like them to ask, or put a big sticker on the cover saying 'Not for everyones use." Or something similar
to be fair; you did pay a lot of money for that book and people should be asking to borrow it

I would go one step further and write 'I LIKE BALLZ' or something similarly inappropriate on it 'MLP FANGUIDE FOR MANBOYS'. Then whenever you see someone with it you can loudly ask if they have your MLP FANGUIDE or whatever.
Embarass the fethers.

That reminds me of the first time I went into a GW store, the guy basically jumped on me and bombarded me with questions then dragged me and my friend over to a table and started rolling dices and asked me to move the minitiaures. After it all I was like WTF!

Better yet write on the book cover
5 dollar per use so that every time you catch some one with it they owe you a dollar
That way you get more money to buy more plastic crack
