i Have a friend that has played Eldar but wants to start a Tau army and doesn't want to wait till the update. What would be the best models for him to get to fill out the 1500 point list.

I am waiting to the new tau codex before I buy most stuff because I believe they will change most models like XV8's and XV88's but I say getting the tanks is a save bet.

Based on the current rules, a Battleforce to start, another Fire Warrior squad with a transport, a couple more Crisis suits, and a Hammerhead will give you a base on which to build; there's likely going to be a new book sometime soon (Eldar, Tau, Black Templars, Dark Angels, and Orks are the list of things dramatically in need of an update), but I can't see Fire Warriors, Crisis suits, Devilfish, and Hammerheads going out of style.

Best way to go about it - 2 Battleforces, 1-2 Skyray Boxes, look on ebay for 2-3 Broadsides and 3 extra Battlesuits, and grab another 12-24 Firewarriors.

That'll get you your HQ suit, 36-48 Firewarriors (great base, and with such an objective rich envoironment will be needed), 5 battlesuits, 6 stealthsuits, 2-3 Broadsides and 2 Devilfish, 2 Hammerheads. (And a bunch of Kroot)

That's a great balanced force that can make 1500-2000pts without much trouble to draw from that'll hold it's own fairly well, but doesn't go overboard on anything meaning that with a codex change you're unlikely to get shafted and it will be easy to expand.

As well as that, it's going to be ages till we get our book.
You know what people told me when I wanted to start my Tau army? Don't bother, wait for the new book to come out!.
That was about a year ago now, and I've had great fun with my alt.force. We're certainly not going to see Tau in the next few months, I somehow doubt it'll be before next summer, if it's even next year. (Hope it'll be early 2013, but hardly garunteed.)

Looking at the recent change to selling base XV8 suits and Fine cast upgrades for the suits and that this is what they just did for the new Chaos Marines, I am not thinking that is going to happen. I do expect to see more of Forgeworld stuff come over. Most likely a flyer, Tetras, and hammer head upgrades. I would love to see the XV9 come over.

I think we will see a new XV8 kit, especially being all the 'alt' suits have been switched to upgrade packs.

HOPEFULLY one with 2 of every weapon and a part for each upgrade (as well parts for gun / shield / marker drones)...
