We've got some fondness for plasma weapons due to tradition and the fact that the Lion used to use a combi-plasma, nothing more. There's nothing in the rules that gives us special bonuses with them, we've just decided we like them.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Many of the Founding Chapters have a good amount of Plasma left from the old days as well. I thought I heard a rumor of a more passable "Get's Hot" for the new DA codex but just a rumor....

OK, here's the scoop:

Back when the Dark Angels codex was first released, they were the only army who could take Plasma Cannons in tactical squads. Everyone else could ONLY take them in Devastator Squads.

Then when the next Codex: Space Marines came out, they took all the cool things that Codex: Dark Angels had introduced (Troops bikers, Land Speeder Typhoons, Tactical Plasma Cannons, a few other things) and made them available to everyone.

Thus the tragic saga of the "Dark Angels Fold-in" began.

Ah. That makes more sense... Well... I think i best keep the strength of the unforgiven. 3 plasmas in each squad it is.

The Lion was really slow when it came to calling dibs on stuff.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Excerpt from "Seeress of Kell", Book Five of The Malloreon series by David Eddings.

I tought the same thing about DV set.
It looked a bit as if GW put in so much plasma weaponry on their side to balance the armies out a bit.

With power weapons being AP3 in 6th edition, terminators are much more powerful, now. Plasma is a good counter for them.

Fluffwise it's relatively new but it's explained mostly as a tradition thing. The Dark Angels were the first Legion and never let anyone forget it, even though it probably hardly made a difference considering how quickly the Legions were probably raised. As such they go out of their way to maintain their old wargear, including what I assume is one of the few remaining heresy era jetbikes, probably more venerable dreadnoughts, and apparently more plasma weaponry. Moreso than any other part of the Imperium, they're still fighting in the past and can't let go of it (literally, they are obsessed with tracking down 10,000 year old traitors like nobody's business).

All in all I think it's a bit of a stretch, but so be it. It gives them a little more character. I would be happy if the new codex set them apart more in this regard, and hopefully GW can resist sharing the DA's new goodies with C:SM.

I really do enjoy the theme of Dark Angels having more Archeotech and pre-heresy gear then anyone else. It was originally suggested that they were like this before too. (Most Terminator armor and able to make it..before it became the style for everyone to have that)

I'd love to see them with more old fashioned, high tech gear, being a group that values it's traditions greater.

Gw should definatly make the plasma weponry a thing properly for the da. Even if its cheaper than the others like meltas etc. Or reverse the choices. Make the plasmas the free options instead of flamer/missile...

That could work.

I know theyre potentially better but theres the risk and str 7 is taking down a landraider...

Where as a melta is so youd still have the want to upgrade to the melta...

Not that i would. Theme n all...
