With the new chaos dex out, does anyone think this could work well? I have a sizeable guard army, and I'd been wanting to branch into chaos. I saw that Dark Apostles were included in the new codex, and thought that maybe this would work.
I don't have the codex yet, are the Dark Apostles even useful?
And would it be better to just take cultists instead of IG allies?
I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!

I'm going to run a Chaos/IG army soon with the IG running a single (but rather large) platoon.
I would think that doing both could provide an interesting combo, using the IG's orders to pack one big punch and keep things in check with using the chaos as another hammer blow.
it depends on how you play it mate think on what you what the army to do and work to it.
Cheers

So if the opposite of Pro is Con, Would that mean Congress is the opposite of Progress?
I would be glad to support Australia's PM, once we figured out who last's long enough. |

The cultists are a bit dissapointing, but there are some things in the csm codex that would have great synergy with IG.
Blobs of 20 csm on foot.
Chaos spawn.
Oblits
Cheap terminators
Cheap bikes
Havoc are inexpensive
Also 3 of the special characters are really good for the 160ish price range: kharne, Lucious, and Bile.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Dark Apostles suck to be honenst
cultists are ok for CCW pistol but otherwise very unimpressive.
Allied guard can be nice, but you can easily join and give them fearless.
I am going to be allying in IG to my chaos but it will never be as powerful as IG allied into SW.

That doesn't sound very promising, although Lucius the Eternal does look like a fun character to play. Perhaps I'll work a themed force around him later on. Word bearers probably won't work out though, if the cultists AND the dark apostles are both sub par

You army will WORK. It's just whether you want it to be winning tournaments or not. But frankly, if you are going to want a competitive army the theme should "competitive." If you want to make a Word Bearers army with IG allies go for it. There's nothing stopping you except everyone telling you it won't work... but if you want to play that army and have fun and cool models there's no reason you shouldn't do it. Also because it's not the "best" option doesn't mean you can't win. How many times do you think there is going to be an army similar to yours? Probably rarely. That's a strength if you ask me. If you win a tournament with it I guarantee you will see a lot more of it though

I'd say cultists are plenty competitive. For less than 200 points, you can get a 35 man squad with 2 attacks each base. Sheer weight of attacks should drown most enemies. And at that point total, you can field these squads as distractions if you want to, or screens.

For a similar cost I can get 40 bodies with 2 ranged attacks at the same strength, who can take orders to attack more, or go to ground on an objective then be ordered to get back up again and keep fighting.
IG are just better in so many respects. Not saying that cultists are bad, just that IG allies provide higher quality meat for the grinder.

And as is usual for those who agree IG over Cultists, they conveniently leave out the part where they also have to buy a HQ on top of that, as well as the fact that the IG can't benefit from anything from the Chaos army, such as Fearless characters or Psychic Powers, to name a few.

Godless has a point, but a Lord Commissar is pretty cheap and will deliever all the LD you will need.
Best use would be either running 2x Valk with Vets or a Large Infantry blob to hold down a flank.

I'd much rather have a CCS then a lord commissar, unless your IG are providing the melee aspect of your force. And if so.......maybe you need to rethink some stuff.

A CCS isnt exactly dead weight. More like 50 points of awesomesauce.

50 points to make my "cultists" be able to improve their cover save then get back up into the fight. 50p to twinlink any heavy weapons I do take with my cultists 50p to add an extra shot to my meatshield 50p in addition to the meat that I would buy anyway from CSM to access vendettas, valks, lemon tanks, manticores, basilisks. I would have thought its a GIVEN when talking about IG ALLIES that you are buying the mandatory HQ. Especially when I'm mentioning orders such as get back into the fight- which is issued by said HQ unit. I hardly call leaving that out, but since you couldn't figure it out- yes you do have to pay 50p for your order giving HQ. So what else do you have for cultist meat> guard meat? -edit- oh how surprising the asshat doesn't post back <_<
