Per an upcoming article in the British Journal of Sports Medicine every hour of Television you consume over the age of 25 shortens your lifespan 22 minutes.

How much have you shortened your life span this week Dakka?

Personally I don't count towards the study as I'm not over 25, but I really don't watch that much TV, I usually buy box sets of the shows I want to watch and take those an episode or two at the time and I refuse to even purchase cable.

This just in: every breath you take reduces your lifespan by one breath!

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Thank god I only watch about 3 hours of tv a week! On the other hand I do smoke 1/2 a pack of cigs a day. But I don't drink or do drugs. And I read, eat healthy, and work out. So am I canceling out everything? Probably not but tv won't be my dying grace!!! Haha

I wonder if the results would be similar for hours looking at a computer screen or watching films, or if it's really just specific to broadcast television.

Or by however many years of life you have left if the sheer stupidity of election year finally drives you to suicide.

I'm a little iffy on this study. I doubt they came to something as media-friendly as "This shortens your life by X amount". Journalists love to write misleading titles for studies.

What were their controls (This is very important, a recent and farcical study that showed a link to cancer and GM foods was basically thrown out because the only control was exposure to light)? What was the lifestyle of the people studied? Did they do no exercise at all? What was their diet like?

This sounds more like something you could argue against just sitting around inactive, not just watching TV.

I'm not really arguing against the actual study, if anything it's stating the bleeding obvious that a sedentary lifestyle shortens your life span.

Read the article. They write what I was thinking; TV itself doesn't shorten your life span. Being an amorphous blob, eating chips and drinking soda all day shortens your lifespan. I think this study caught the difference between people who try to live healthy vs. people who don't. After all, if you're off being productive you're not really watching TV (or browsing dakkadakka/reddit/4chan/etc...)

Waiting to see the study that shows 4chan shortens lifespans. It probably has a more direct effect than TV.

Another showed that 100% of people that consume food die. Obviously the solution is to stop eating.

At least this (the TV bit) isn't as ignorant (unfortunately, not as funny either) as the petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide. To think, some politicians actually wanted to ban it .

If you've somehow missed it here is one of the petition sites.

It just shows how people don't check things when they hear about it.

Anyone with basic knowledge of chemistry would know that Di-hydrogen Monoxide is what water would be called under the current method of naming chemical compounds.

And yes, this is one of the more serious things.

Of course, my guess is that it isn't the TV itself thats killing you. Its laying around like a fatass on the couch while watching it thats doing the damage. And the same could be applied to being on the internet.... wait a sec

The study found that T.V. viewing time may be associated with a loss of life that is comparable to other major chronic disease risk factors such a physical inactivity, smoking and obesity. The finding suggest that substantial loss of life may be associated with prolonged T.V. viewing time among Australian adults.

No autocorrelation there at all.

Its almost like activities which encourage physical inactivity shorten life spans.
