I've heard a lot of people laughing at the Fortress of Redemption Inebriation being for Space Wolves with their Nordic background, but would Space Marines actually be able to get drunk? They have all the anti poison abilities that seem like they would interfere with that.

As a discussion grows in length, the probability of a comparison to Matt Ward or Gray Knights approaches one.

No they can't. The Oolitic Kidney and Preomnor take care of that.

That said the Space Wolves have something they put in Fenresian Ale which counter-acts their implants and can get them drunk. It's so potent it will kill an ordinary man.

Last I checked Space Wolf drinking contests were actually the reverse of normal peoples' drinking contests. The filtering organs don't get rid of the alcohol's effects instantaneously, so the goal of the contest is to drink enough Fenresian Ale quickly enough to overcome the safeguards so that they can actually get passed-out drunk before everyone else, which tends to take rather a lot.

There is a plant on Fenris that blocks the poison filtration systems. Its ground up and added to Fenrisian Ale.

Space Wolves also carry some with them to add to any local liquor.

Are these the famous mjod stories? And also, why would they want to get flat-out drunk?

Seeing a squad of veterens swoop in in a Vendetta, secure the area, deliver that math assignment, and extract within 2 minutes would be freaking sweet.

You'll understand when you're older. Assuming you aren't older already.

They just want to get drunk, have some fun, and be happy. Which is absolutely understandable for anyone really, even more so to a space marine who does nothing but get shot at and kill things.

I don't see a reason to get pissed out drunk either.

I'm the guy that'll videotape the procedings and later use it for blackmail.

lol I'm a young teen. And cannot have fruit-sugar. Isn't shooting, killing, and making awesome stories the best to space wolves? Where does the happy-juice take part?

Aye, they drink because they're SPACE VIKINGS! and therefore must consume copious amounts of alcohol. It's rather stupid but what can you do.

In the Horus Heresy series, Battle for the Abyss to be specific, Brynngar (Space Wolf Wolf Guard) drinks something called Wulfsmeade which is what everybody is describing as Fenrisian Ale. Basically this drink is made dangerously potent and can affect the Space Wolf's metabolism to such an effect that yes, he gets drunk.

They probably have to drink something that's the equivalent to jet fuel to get hammered.

Pretty much.

A Space Marine's ability to get drunk is directly proportionate to how badly you want them to adhere to some cheesy trope.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

If any marines can, Space Wolves can.

I've never been pissed passed out drunk, I have never been more than happily tipsy. I do no see the appeal of getting plastered and can't for the life of me understand why. I have many friends who go down that road and I just don't understand how it can be fun if you don't remember a thing about what happened. And that's not counting the "fun" of the hangover.

Embiding alcohol in a social environment situation can actually deepen bonding between people. Your inhibitions are loosened and some people become much more truthful. In fact they become more of their real self than the facad that they think they must maintain. That is until they have had too much.

I can see a family or clan oriented chapter like the SW using it as a bonding agent between brothers. It allows them to be real and to understand each other on a deeper level.

I personally drink for the flavor of the alcohol, not the effects.

In Battle for the Abyss and Prospehro Burns the SW were drinking something akin to petrol ( it's that flammable) I think they would feel something from that but normal drink might as well be water to them.

The intoxication that accompanies excessive alcohol consumption is commonly used in a great many human social rituals, military especially, to create a shared experience that deepens the bond in the group. Showing your willingness to participate in something that makes you vulnerable, look stupid or is potentially dangerous tells the rest of the group that you're willing to sacrifice some of your own needs and wants for the sake of the groups needs. Crude as it may be its still rather effective. Space marines don't need to do something like this after all the hypno-indoctrination but including a ritual like that with the space wolves fluff just humanizes them a little.

Plus vikings in space need to drink mead to be vikings in space. Apparently.

I somehow misread this thread as "Can Space Marines dunk?" which brought me to the conclusion that pitching all the Space Marine and traitor legions against each other in Basketball games would be really really awesome. World Eaters vs. Blood Angels match? I bet those jump packs make for some pretty good dunking...

On topic... I don't know but all the answers here are pretty interesting

Astartes can get drunk but it takes a very powerful concoction like Wulfsmeade to get the job done. Also, due to their enhanced physiology, they aren't drunk for very long.

Why stop with Raptors versus Assault Marines basketball? Let the Scourges or the Swooping Hawks get in on the action? Battlesuits? Stormboyz?

Gentlemen, we have an American variant of Blood Bowl. Someone write up a ruleset and see if we can get GW to publish it.
