Heya.
I about to build my first Tau army.
i have a question about crisis suits that have like 1000 combinations
can i chose like 2 offensive and 1 defence like having a TW plasma cannon and a shield generator.????

AND... can i chose to have a drone controller beside having these three other options?
How do you set up you crisis units? and what do you use them against

Yhis may be of use

Also yes
And no unless its hardwired, only suits with access to wargear can have hardwired equipment.

The 'standard' setups are Deathrains and Fireknives.

Deathrains are suits with Twin Linked Missile Pods used for anti-tank purposes (taking out AV10-12) and general anti-infantry duties.

Fireknives are all round suits with a Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod and Multi-tracker, that are used to take down elite infantry with the plasma rifles, and just about everything else bar heavy armour.

Personally, I tend to run 2 Deathrains and 2x2 Fireknives.

More advice if wanted later when I have more time!

Drone without a Controller

The dakka has answers to all your questions..!

Read this article. It's 5th ed, but still a must-read for any new Tau.

About drones:
The standard drone controller takes 1 of your 3 hard-points, that is true, and shouldn't be taken as such.

Instead, upgrade a suit to a Team Leader who has access to the Hard-Wired version. It doesn't take a hard-point! :3

About shield generator:
4++ for the suit is good, but it takes a Hard Point and Lascannons will still insta.kill you if you fail the save. Shield Drones are cheaper and and gives you an extra wound the enemy has to drill through.

Deathrain's or Crisis Suits with Twin Linked Missile Pods and Targetting Array are my favorite since the codex came out.

Longest ranged option for Crisis Suits, Great Strength for wounding/penetrating tougher creatures and vehicles, two shots makes TL feature worth it, relatively cheap, and AP is not that bad.

A squad of three only costs 159 points.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

My advice is always upgrade your suit to BS 4 before choosing your weapons. Yes, this takes up a hardpoint slot by default. Yes this means that you can't use 2 different weapons at once unless the suit is a commander, Shas'vre or Team Leader, but hitting 33% more often with the weapons for a less than 33% total increase in the suit price is huge.

I would only consider taking suits without BS 4 if you have huge amounts of Markerlights or maybe a twin linked weapon.

I run 3 fireknife teams of three along with an HQ sporting mp/pr/mt...etc. Plasma is hard to deal with esp with AP2. Marine and termy killer. Deathrains only fire 2 shots be it twin linked but still 2 per suit. I'd rather have 4 shots at 18" per suit of fireknives with heavy markerlight support from tetras. Best of luck.

I swapped my BS4 for a flamer when 6th edition came out. I'll twin-link the main gun and pack the flamer for just in case. Even if I just use it for over-watch, 3 flamers put out some good hits.

You can't get 4 shots at 18".
2 at 36" (Missile Pod), 3 at 24" (Plasma Rifle + Missile Pod), 4 at 12" (Rapid Fire Plasma Rifle + Missile Pod)
Unless you're including move, which isn't exactly the most accurate thing to do.

The Deathrains are basically cheap and effective (53pts for what's effectively an Autocannon - AC dreads are 125pts and 2 Deathrains are 106pts, with 3 being 159pts)
Fireknives are great, 62pts per and more varied and all-roundy, though BS3, at 186pts for 3.

That said, I'm debating trying out some Burning Eyes (Twinlinked Plasma Rifle + Targetting Array) just to see what Twin-Linked BS4 Plasma Rifles can do.

I run two groups of Fireknifes and one group of TL MP and Flamers, they act as a nice charging deterent and long range support and are dirt cheap

I think they are including the 6" move as well, it seems to be a big trend to show affective range. I know it confused the hell out of me when I first started trying to get to grips with things.
