So I'm writing up lists here and there and mostly building a force that combines good fluff with a decent amount of teeth. I'm not talking hardcore face-stomp tournament level, but enough oomph that I can take it and win games, but keep happy with my choices. I'm running into a bit of a crossroads regarding my troops choices.

Do I take 2 kitted out CSM squads (double plasma or melta) with Rhinos?

Or do I take 1 of those squads and 2 20-man Cultist squads that are only lightly geared and upgraded?

I am leaning towards the 2-kitted squads, but that is a very fragile amount of objective holders, which really puts the impetus of killing everything on my other units. On the other hand, if I take more redundancy with my 3-squad units, I have squads that are very much points just to sit on objectives, which while tactically decent does mean that I'm going into battles down points when it comes to the brass tacks.

Thoughts?

Why are you assuming there has to be a choice? I have two of each and it is only just over 600pts, which is what you should be spending on Troops anyway.

Well that's your opinion ^^

Not a big fan of cultists unless you go out of your way to make them fearless.

That said I'd run 3 squads of troops. The trick is to remember you need them to live in obj. missions.

If we all had to put 'in my opinion' before every post the forums would get dull very fast.

Cultists aside though, two units of Troops is not enough in 6th edition, which was my point. As you said, 3 at least, but for me 4 is more like it. So naturally I have five.

Cultists not aside, they don't need to be Fearless if they are just sitting behind an Aegis going to ground on an objective. That's 100pts well spent (assuming the Aegis is in the army for other reasons, which it should be).

What points value game are we talking about? At 2000 I am going to be running 3x 10 CSM squads with dual plasma with VOTlW with a power weapon champion and one troop of 30 cultists with 3 flamers.

At 1500 points I'll probably just drop one of the CSM squads.

40 Cultists is a LOT of people to shoot down - but they do need Fearless to stick around. For that reason you want a Dark Apostle or some other trick to run with them.
If you're still worried about their staying power, you could try running 30-odd with the Mark of Nurgle instead - or even take Typhus to upgrade them to Plague Zombies, though you'd only get one such unit.

Not to mention only 10 zombies.

Incorrect - check the FAQ GW have now released, it's up to 35.

Generally the goal is the 2000 level.

I think I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and cut some of my fun stuff for a 3rd CSM squad. That gives me a sad, but it's gotta happen I suppose.

General rule of thumb is 1 scoring troop at least per 500.

That's the common point of view.

In your squads, doing the chainsword tango

whilst of course being subjective from army to army.

I'd take godless mimicry's advice- Take both. plas, melta rhino's+40 cultists is a solid troop base methinks. Lots of boots, and some effective boots too help the soft ones
